How exactly does this sleep mode or hibernate mode work, i'm asking because i have the energy saver set to 15 minutes for the computer sleep and 15 minutes for the display sleep.
View 10 RepliesMy 2010 macbook pro took 20sec to sleep and also take awhile to wakeup. So I came accross a thread that saying the macbook intend to hibernate first before fall asleep. Plus Hibernate mode is draining out battery and paste a big sleep image on the HDD.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWell I have the following task/issue. I have iMac and installed SamrtSleep 3rd party utility. It put my IMac in hibernate mode once system goes sleep. I have made for UPS setup so when power is off iMac will hibernate. The problem is I have several external hard drives - FireWire and USB. Anytime I wakeup after hibernate the USB drives is unplugged and plugged again (software mode) and it breaks everything (if any) what was busy with this external drive and Not Properly Ejected warning appear. For example I have image file on external USB mounted before sleep. After wakeup it's unmounted like if I will just switch hard disk off while running. However my FireWire works just fine the same way like internal hard drive. I have virtual machine image file on FireWire disk. I open and run it. Than go to hibernate and wakeup. The system stays same place where it was before sleep. Noting was unmounted/unplugged. I was able to continue work on Mac OS as well as in same place in virtual machine. First I was looking for help here and All Over The Google but all issues is around how to unmount all external drives before sleep. But I don't need to unmount them I need hibernate them together with all system. Also when wakeup my virtual machine notice me where to plug many USB devices (it always ask when new one is connected). It means when Mac OS wakeup from hibernate it "break" all USB connections however nothing happens with FireWire. My question so far if its possible to put USB in some mode when it will not "break" on wakeup? Or maybe any other solution to hibernate USB disks.

Last night instead of shutting down my Macbook Pro, I closed the lid and expected the Pro to just hibernate as usual, and yes it did. But when I woke it up this morning the keyboard and trackpad didnt work. I have tried everything from restart, forced shutdown, and even the SMC thing to reset the Pro, but nothing works, it just goes to the login page and I cant do much else there besides from shutting down.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI sometimes forgotten to unplug the device before closing the lid. Such as when I'm in a hurry and close the lid of the MBP, only then realize that my iPhone is still attached.
I don't want to put unnecessary stress on the harddrive by it going to sleep, waking up, then sleep again just because that unplugging an USB device woke it up. I notice that this does not happend on my Windows laptop.
I'm having a problem with my PowerBook G4 where is goes into sleep mode at random times. Mostly when I am streaming video..or at times the fan comes on, it sounds super high then boom. sleep mode again. After hitting the space bar, it comes back on, but it'll happen again shortly after. I've played with the sleep settings

After entering my username and password, it would enter the desktop for a short period of time and then kick back into sleep mode; the screen would turn back to black. Sometimes it will let me stay on the desktop for a long time and other times it will hardly let me stay on the desktop. I called apple support and they had me start the computer in safe mode; even then it occasionally kicks me out.
The tech guy said that it was a "strange software issue" and not a hardware issue. I thought it was a hard drive issue; my hard drive makes an odd sound when it unlocks (a grinding sound), but it has been doing that for quite some time with no issues. I tried to reset the SMC and it didn't do anything.
How should I remedy this problem? Is this a hard drive issue? Hard drive failure? Has the grinding sound finally caught up with me? I am running OS X; not leopard or snow leopard. I know I need to upgrade, but this shouldn't be happening.
Suddenly the sleep mode does not work anymore. Did not change anything.

I am running Mac Mini as a home server (turns out to be not a great idea, btw), and even though I set the preference to never sleep or shut down, it does go to sleep when there is no activity for long time. Since I am using it as home server, it should stay awake all the time or at least wake up from sleep when there is incoming ping from other computer, but it just goes to sleep.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a 15" mbp with 10.6 Intel core duo, 4gb ram with a boot camp and ubuntu partition through parallels. The other day I was installing xcode from apple's website, which failed 3 times after downloading saying the package couldn't be expanded. I left my computer for a while and came back where i then had to log in again. it rejected my password numerous time (i'm positive it was correct). when i restarted my computer i got a kernal panic screen when the apple logo came up. it told me to restart the computer which i did. didn't work. i restarted with the osx cd to use the disk utility. when it checked the drive it found a bunch of errors, which i then tried to correct. it went for a couple minutes then told me they couldn't be fixed and i should try to back up my data and reinstall osx. i don't know how to back up my hard drive when i can't log into my account. i've tried to boot in target disk mode and copy some files that way, but the only disk the other computer sees is my windows partition- no mac partition.
i've also tried these, none of these have worked: restarting in safe mode resetting the ram and pram booting with different sticks of ram all result in a kernal panic.
my windows partition still works fine though (as much as i hate to say it) the only things I really care about on my computer are my files from school and my itunes library. is there any way i can get these files off my computer?
i have a little problem with the sleep light... i don't know when this started, but i notice today, that when i put my macbook pro to sleep, the light just stays on and not "pulsing" like it used to do... is that normal?

When finishing for the night though on a Vista machine I hibernate - actually the auto-hibernate is fairly aggressively set on all my notebooks, so even if I leave it in immediate resume sleep it will hibernate after an hour or so. What it means is that if I'm working off batteries it doesn't end up even flatter the next day.
It's been a while since I used an OS X notebook actually on the move on an all-day basis, but the Air is getting a workout in that role at the moment. I know OS X is capable of the same thing but usually only when the battery is on low charge. I notice on the Air the sleep uses up around 10% of a charge during an ~8-hour night and that is not great, especially on top of the mediocre battery life of the Air. Is there a way to set auto-hibernate-to-disk after a certain period of sleep? I know I can shut it down, and a de-hibernate pretty much takes the same amount of time as booting up, but I want my stuff to come up as they're left.
I got my first mac yesterday and was wondering if there is a feature similar to hibernating in windows in mac os x? I'm sure there will be - I just haven't stumbled across it!

Second time since yesterday-My MacBook (White-2007) has been stuck in the sleep mode and the only way for me to get out of it was to force shutdown. (Pressed the power button for ~5 seconds.)
The white sleep light had stalled and was not blinking-Is this an indication of software problems, or that my harddrive is about to fail?
I have a Mac Pro and when I put it to sleep, it randomly starts itself back up-sometimes after 2 minutes and sometimes after 3 hours. I've tried repairing permissions, maintenance, etc. and have no clue as to what might be causing this.
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy parents just bought a new Imac (3.4 Ghz/I7) which is running 10.6.8. and we cannot figure out why it won't go to sleep automatically. In System Preferences/Engergy Saver we have set both the "computer sleep" and "display sleep" to about 5 minutes, but no matter what we do it keeps showig the screen saver and never goes to sleep. The "put hd to sleep" is checked, and the start screen saver is set to roughly the same amount... I have tried adjusting these settings, to no avail.

My old G5 dual 1.6 will not go into sleep mode. I had upgraded to 10.5 but several of my photography programs would not run so I reverted back to 10.4 by reinstalling the operating system and not wiping the drive clean. I now must shut down everytime or the G5 will get to the point that all of the cooling fans are running full speed and it will not go into sleep mode automatically. Any suggestions other than a clean install?

Whenever I close the lid to my MacBook it'll go to sleep by turning off the harddisk and the light is blinking. But when I go to pick it up or even move it the Superdrive makes a noise as if its searching for a disk and the apple on the lid/monitor blinks on and off. Basically the computer never really stays in sleep mode.

In addition, when it happens, the fan goes into hyperblow, which doesn't make sense because it would not be operating if the system were completely shut down. It acts like it is shut down but won't respond or wake up, etc. I re-loaded my system software per the Mac Store Genius' advice, but that didn't work. Is it possible that my power supply is going?

But now it's causing sleep problems with my computer. When the Data Port is connected to USB, the computer won't sleep. I unplug it and it sleeps just fine.
