Mac Pro :: Mix Of Freezes / Hangs And Weird Graphical Artifacts Showing Up On Screens
Jul 1, 2012
I own two Intel-era Mac Pros, one at work, the other at home office.couple months ago both started having the same problem: a mix of freezes/hangs and weird graphical artifacts showing up on the screens.Usually I need to reboot. Usually a reboot fixes the problem for a while until it recurs. If it was just one computer, I'd figure disk problem or graphics card. But the fact that both have been affected at the same time makes me suspect some software issue or possibly a trojan/virus.

Ok, this is kind of hard to describe without a recording of it but my MacBook has this frustrating fault where it beachball's without warning and produces a really hard to describe sound every few seconds. The best I can come with to describe it is an "uh-oh" sound from around the keyboard area. It hangs like this for anything from 2-10 mins and will be pretty much unusable in that time.

My dual screens are flashing, sometimes fading in and out of blue. Sometimes when they flash back to my normal desktop from the blue, everything is frozen, I can't move the mouse or do anything. What is going on with this? I have a Mac Pro Tower, OS X 10.5.4, 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core intel Xeon processing, 6 GB 800MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM RAM. I use this machine to run a recording studio. It is used primarily with a Pro Tools HD3 rig.

I have a 2009 8-core running Lion. It has now starting hanging (desktop visible but no response to any input device). I have run Disk Utility and Apple Hardware Test from install DVD (full test) and it finds no issues. Any thoughts as to how to investigate further. Sounds like a memory leak in an app somewhere, but none are left runnIng.Machine is ok when being used but then is hung when left for a few hours. If I take to Genius Bar I assume they will run AHT and say no faults can be found.

Ok, I've noticed this week that my 2010 13" MBP hangs a lot when it plays any videos I've bought off of itunes (it's fine with other videos). I mean anytime a itunes video pops up on my itunes player, the whole computer hangs (beachball of death and can't do anything). And it hangs for quite a bit (haven't timed it but a minute maybe?)
At first I thought it was the graphics card as the first time I realized what was causing my computer to randomly freeze up (it's been starting to do that this week but at first wasn't sure what cause itunes was in the background) it gave the wierd color bars on the video screen for the video it was playing (I have itunes play the video in the small box on the left bottom corner). Like the whole video screen was random fubar color bars and not the video (it took a minute and then eventually played fine after me reclicking the video). It has not done that since.
I played around with it and noticed it seems fine when I play videos I have not bought off of itunes but it reliabley hangs the whole computer when I try to play a video bought off of itunes. It eventually plays but it is really annoying particularly cause it holds up my whole computer until it resolves whatever issue it is.
So, hardware or software and any suggestions if it is software on how to fix it?

I have a unibody Macbook Pro running OSX 10.6.3. Everything is up to date but the computer is now on its second hard drive and fresh install of OSX and is still unusable. After the hard drive was replaced, it worked flawlessly for an evening. However, the old symptoms reemerged the next morning. Symptoms: very slow to boot or freezes on gray screen with status circle frozen grey circle with slash through it on boot
once it boots, if it does boot, the beachball constantly spins/freezes... I have literally no software installed on the fresh install and it still does it when attempting to boot in safe mode Also, the hard drive when checked gives the following errors even after I repair them in drive genius (the same errors the old drive reported):
invalid file count
invalid directory count

A few months ago I had a problem with my Macbook Pro, (late 2009 model, 15" 2.53 ghz) that many users with Snow Leopard have, the random 30 second freezes. I simply reset the PRAM and SMC and I never encountered it again. Now, out of the blue, on Sunday (yesterday), I started experiencing these hangs again, but worse. The night before I had been browsing the web and my battery went to reserve and shut down, so I plugged it in and when I awoke and turned it on I started experiencing problems. I figured I would try the same fix, and it almost seemed to make the problem worse. Now if I shut down the computer via "apple -> shut down", then turn it back on and log in etc., from the first few seconds the machine hangs. If I open a folder I get the immediate beach-ball and the machine is un-responsive for anywhere from 1 minute - 5+ minutes.
I have read a lot of fixes for this problem, but most of the people's problems resulted from using Safari or Spotlight. I strictly use Firefox and very rarely even open Safari, and I think I've used Spotlight maybe 3 times total, none in the past few months. So far the things I've tried are:
- Reset PRAM
- Reset SMC
- Run Disc Utility and verify, repair etc. (from SL install disc)
So I'm wondering right now what can I do? Its finals week right now and im in college so wiping my HD is not an option. I feel like there is just something hanging the computer but I can't find the culprit.

I have a mac pro running leopard (purchased in 2/08) and it was running beautifully for almost 2 months with no hangs, crashes or freezes. Then, for some reason, today when I turned it on, it would not boot. It would get to the apple logo, then just sit there for a few minutes, then reboot itself and the same thing would happen. I pulled out the ethernet cable, unplugged all usb except keyboard/mouse and it would then (sometimes) boot into the system, log me in and present me with the UI.
I then quickly performed a soft reboot and it would get to the desktop. However, I can only use it for anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes before it would completely lockup. The clock freezes, the mouse freezes and it just sits there forever. I have tried booting into Vista (BootCamp) and it also freezes before startup is complete. If I hold down Option and then select the System disk, it will either just hang forever or get to the desktop and then freeze again....................

I've noticed recently that when in Finder, all folders/files have a Modified Date of somewhere in January 2009 or January 2008, regardless of when it was actually modified/created. My clock at the top left-hand corner says Oct 20 though. Any thoughts?

My new Mac Pro arrived the other day, and I've been having some graphical problems with it, mostly is Finder. The computer itself runs great, and it surpassed my expectations running Final Cut Pro. But these graphical errors never happened on my old Powerbook, and they're reminiscent of the days when I used PC's. Basically, sections of the screen don't get "erased" or "refreshed," so portions of old windows will stay on the screen after it's been closed or moved, kind of like it's leaving behind a trail or ghost after it's gone. The clock wasn't graphically updating, either, so at 6 tonight it said it was 2:25 p.m. Has anyone else had similar problems?
I'm running on 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core processors, 2 GB of RAM (soon to be upgraded), 8800 GT graphics card, and my display is a Samsung 2253BW. Unlikely it's the monitor, but possible, I guess?

So I'm doing a presentation about Playing Cards for a contest. I design a full deck of cards on Photoshop and them convert each card to .png to insert them on keynote one by one to arrange them like a spread deck, I put 40 cards in one slide with some object animation as well as slide animations The problem is: when I run the "view test" to see who the slides looks like, it takes FOREVER to jump to one slide to the other, and the animations barely play, I tried to make a QT video to try to see, and Keynote doesn't handle it and crashes.
I looked up to the Activity monitor, and it told me the keynote was using almost 800mb of memory (out of 4gb), to be fair I quit all the apps running just to make keynote "feel better", no progress.
The only solution was to delete the slides with the 40 cards and just work on the slides with less than 10 cards and add those 40 cards slides back when the presentation is done.
But it is so inconvenient as some objects animations on some slides are related, including all the slides with the 40 cards, furthermore I have to present it, the solution would be convert to QT movie but again keynote doesn't handle it.
I'm very disappointed with keynote, I wasn't expecting this malfunction at all.
What should I do?
Any bad experiences with keynote as well?

I am seeing graphical glitches appearing on the 2nd screen hooked to my aluminum MacBook (late 2008) through Apple's mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. Dancing pixels, of a sort.
They are not there initially, but appear after an hour or two of use.
Unplugging and re-plugging the screen into the MacBook clears the issue...for a while...
The monitor in question is an Apple Cinema Display with an ADC connector, going through and Apple DVI to ADC converter before getting to the mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. It's a lot of adapters, but it should not be a problem. And the glitches were never seen when this external screen was (until recently) used with my MacBook Pro rev 1.
See a poor-quality video of the glitches here:
[URL]
Is anyone else experiencing this?
I have since returned my 2.0GHz MacBook in exchange for a 2.4GHz unit (I could not live without the illuminated keyboard I was used to on an earlier MBP). I see the glitch on this unit as well...
I recently launched Unreal Tournament 2004 while the glitch was evident and the dancing pixels became dramatically more prevalent - maybe 1/4 of the on-screen pixels were affected. When I exited the game, the external screen went back to the "normal" level of dancing pixels. Sleeping and waking the laptop, as expected, removed the glitches...until they come back.

I'm using one if the first gen Macbook Pro's and I seem to be experiencing major artefacting and ground just disappearing. I was thinking that it may have something to do with the fact that whenever I play a game(unless it's ancient) the fans rev up to 6000 rpm and the base of the computer becomes way too hot to touch. But I have also heard that it could be something to do with not having up to date drivers though I don't know how to check this or even where to download the correct ones. Oh and by the way, the games I tend to play are mostly games that have come out between about 2-6 years ago though I occasionally play a more recent one like Fallout 3(though for some reason it didn't appear to be so bad on this which I found weird considering I had to play it on the lowest settings in order for it to be at all playable)

I've got a late 2007 SR whitebook 2.2ghz 4gig of ram with intel gma x3100 using Snow Leopard 10.6.3. Last couple months (I think) I've experienced some graphical corruption around the edges of apps (it goes black mostly but sometimes looks like lots of lines) it also happens in expose around the windows, also on dock icons. It happened in 10.6.2 and now 10.6.3, its not happening at the moment which is annoying as i can't show you, my macbook seems to run very hot (well it feels hot underneath though the iStat dashboard shows it idling cpu at 57 degrees c).

I have an early 2008 Imac with an Nividia 8800 GS graphics card. It apparently failed two weeks ago, and I just got the machine back after the Apple Store replacing the card. The only graphical glitches I had on the Imac, was the faint line that would run across the screen that you could see on a white background if I left a program's window opened to long; and when using Safari, while encoding a dvd, trying to open up a new tab I would get images of whatever I was encoding in the new safari tab for half a second. Then it would correct itself and bring a blank safari page.

I have received an email in graphical HTML format — a series of venues and dates for a band in the form of a grid. It shows up beautifully in webmail, but in Apple Mail it shows uselessly as unformatted and unpunctuated text. Is there any setting in Mail prefs., or some other subterfuge, that would allow such emails to show properly in Mail?

Hopefully somebody can tell me what's wrong. because it's getting basically impossible for me to do anything on 3 year old MBP. These are artifacts show up mostly when I use Safari. In fact when I CTRL T for a new a tab that's when it's the worst. But it happens when I'm using Photoshop sometimes and other programs. but anyway it seems to be getting worse.

During installation, my graphics got all screwed up. You can see a screenshot of what's going on at this link: [URL]. I'm actually writing on the defective computer, so it's hard for me to see what's in the screenshot. Here's what I did so far. I tried removing half of the RAM first, then the second half, the problem persist. I rebooted on a different system, it's still there (so not software). I tried Hardware Test utility, it says everything is fine. I unplugged the Video Card, cleaned it a little along with the connectors, nothing. It happened DURING the update to 10.4.11 (not after I rebooted). I'm pretty sure I can take screenshots of it, so it's not simply in the connectors to the monitors. It happens on both my monitors (also when I unplug one of them).

I got this card:
XFX HD 4890 8750M 1GB DUAL DVI TV
Product Code: HD-489A-ZDFL
It isn't working in my MacPro properly. It displays artifacts or reboots the system under BootCamp. After 15 minutes of idle warm up it works OK... I've send it to XFX for RMA and they've tested it and "NOFAULTFOUND".

I don't know where post this, but I'm getting since yesterday a weird behavior in OS X Snow Leopard.
I don't know if is related to XCode/iPhone SDK or what. Sometimes, with no apparent reason, the menu of the application become FULL white.
Then in the emulator I get distortions in controls (the edit not show characters when input, but the control are getting it).
Also I lost the Command-Z in the xcode editor. Other glitches are around but I don't remember it right now.
I have a white macbook MacBook2,1.

I'm gonna apologize in advance if this was already posted, but I'm not quite sure what the technical phrasing for this issue is, so I could've missed it in search. I'm running a Macbook Pro 17', manufactured around September 08. It's currently running OS X 10.5. I received it from my school with the computer already set up and all the software pre-installed, so I personally don't have access to things like the boot disc and other base software, but I can get a hold of it if it's necessary. The crash: Somewhere along the boot-up process, or somewhere soon after boot-up, the computer will freeze and a bunch of pixels will rearange themselves. I wish I could show a screenshot, but the best way I can describe it is that these little jagged stripes of pixels will move to places they aren't supposed to; for example, below the little spinning boot-up circle on the initial boot screen, there's a block of pixels kind of shaped like --.--_ that pulses darker and lighter in time with the pixels on the bottom of the circle, so they just seem to be transposed from another position on the screen. If this happens during boot-up, which is most of the time (on the screen with the dark grey apple on a light grey background), then the computer will try to boot up for a while, then the artifacts will run in stripes down the screen and a window will come up telling me to restart my computer. Sometimes--usually when I've shut it down and taken out the battery and let it sit for a while--it'll get past boot-up, and I'll get either almost to the desktop or even get a couple minutes of actual use before the artifacts appear again and the computer freezes.,......

I've had my 27" iMac (3.06GHz) for a few weeks now and yesterday I noticed some weird artifacts appearing on the screen, very randomly.
They will pop up all over the screen but if I "Show desktop", they will go away for a bit but sometimes reappear again in different areas of the screen. I restarted the computer but that only temporarily fixed the problem.
Anyone know what's causing this and how to fix it?

When I loaded up the same page on my pc and mac side by side that the safari version of the page had very poor pictures, i.e. you could see loads of artifacts of the jpg compression. The page I loaded was [URL] and you can see the picture of mr Mac and mr PC stood side by side. I have tried looking through Safari preferences but don't see anything anywhere that would indicate picture compression? Another point I think I should make is that the mac is a macbook and it is running over a 54g network.
So I thought maybe it realised that the speed wasn't up to scratch and therefore adjusted the picture quality itself? Needless to say I did plug in an ethernet lead and after a couple of refreshes the page loaded and the pictures were perfect. Which sort of answered my question? but 54g is a fast enough speed to have high quality images and I thought I should have the choice of selecting this myself?

I've got a bunch of 1080p videos in MKV. When I play them using VLC and switch the video to a different scene (say 20 minutes ahead), artifacts appear throughout the video for a few seconds and then it disappears. I have this on about half of my MKV 1080p Videos. Is this normal? This only occurs when I manually switch to a different scene. If I play the video straight through then it plays fine. This occurs on both my Mac Pro and Windows Vista Computer. Are my videos corrupt? I don't notice this on my Mac Pro when using Movist when switching scenes.
