I want to just COPY not transfer and erase off the old one.. So i want to be bale to transfer it but still be able to play music on the old computer.. so i guess what im getting at is when using migration assistant does it transfer the files, or just copy and transfer?

Jun 6, 2012I have tried using the migration assistant. It will not go beyond my selecting a migration method - From another Mac. Nor am I able to use the system preferences file sharing options outlined on apple support. I am not permitted to select the internet sharing as instructed in step 3 (in issues with migration section)... so cannot proceed from there. Using the target option to transfer files isn't working either.

May 19, 2012My intel iMac hard drive crashed. I had it backed up with Carbon Copy Cloner. The technician who fixed the hard drive put SL on the new hard drive. I tried to restore with CCC first but it didn't restore anything. I used Migration Assistant and it asked about duplicate user names so I gave it a new name to be safe. I now have all my apps but no files. I used MA again and decided to use the same user name this time. I ended up with 2 accounts with the same name but no files. I was hoping to end up with the same computer (e.g. same desktop, all files in the same folders as before, iPhoto, iCal, Address Book, Dashboard etc. all organized and acting the same way as before). Every looking and acting the same way with the exception of the subtle changes brought about by SL.

May 31, 2012I'm transferring files from my MacBook Pro to the new iMac. I decide to use the Migration Assistant and proceed to connect both machines using the USB port. All looked nice in the beginning and the bar tab status started to fulfill indicate the advance and hours to finish. Since yesterday in both screens indicate "3 hours and 53 minutes remaining" and don't go forward. Looks like the process freeze.

Mar 13, 2012I had an Imac running Snow Leopard... I mistakenly(?) thought i could change Permissions by selecting "Everyone" from the startup volume HD icon's Permissions panel and in turn, chose "Apply to All Enclosed Files and Folders" option thinking this would allow all other computers on a small office network to have total free and clear no-security-required, file-sharing read/write- access to this Imac's contents. After doing this and attempting reboot, I couldn't get access to the OS at all even after i ran DiskWarrior and DiskUtilities, so, wound up doing Archive/Install - but used an OS 10.5 disk because i (mistakenly)thought that my 10.6 Snow Leopard disk was only an Updater. So after installing 10.5 again I ran the OS 10.63 disk's installer, bringing the new System Folder up to Snow Leopard. I'm up and running - most system software updates downloaded/done. Problem is now this -- stuff like: Email Clients, Itunes, Browsers, any Apps that had associated data/content files isn't recognizing the old, original contents that belonged to them - instead, these apps all

Jun 28, 2014Just got a new MacBook Pro, wanted to transfer my data from the old (2010) MBP. I've done this dozens of times before, but always manually, via Finder copies from external hard disks, etc. This time I decided to try the Official Method, using Migration Assistant. After numerous tries, I couldn't get Migration Assistant to work between the two MacBook Pros (both running 10.9.3), even with Apple's assistance. So I decided to try it with a MacBook running 10.6.8. It worked (though poorly; Migration Assistance needs some serious repair), which was useful (now I know that Migration Assistant works, and it's not a problem with the cabling I was using, but something in the old MBP). But now I have two user accounts on my new MacBook Pro, which I don't want, plus the added account has now been made the primary account, with (some) data from the previously primary account moved to it.
So I want to delete the new, added, now primary user and return the MBP to its former, pristine state. So I have to go through all the data (fortunately there isn't much; both the new MBP and the MacBook were only recently set up) that's been moved from the original account to the added account, move it back to the original account, then delete the added account (if I can). This was somewhat complicated by the fact that the ~/Library folder is now invisible by default, but I figured that out. However, what I'm wondering now is, when the second, added account was made the primary account, did it assume all attributes of the former primary account, including its number? I know that user accounts in Mac OS have numbers, like 501, 502, etc.
How can I see the numbers of these two accounts? And if the added account is now number 501, when I delete it, how I can I restore the number 501 to the original account? Or perhaps I should just return the new MBP to its factory state, and start over? But I can't, since it didn't come with any Install DVDs (nor indeed, with an optical drive). (I've been out of touch with the Mac world for several years due to illness, am only now learning about the changes since 10.6, which I'd been using until less than a week ago.) I can wipe the MacBook Pro and reinstall 10.9.3, but that might lose some information specific to this computer that came with it.
OS X Yosemite :: Why Setup Assistant And Migration Assistant Forcing To Copy Everything From Old Mac
Dec 2, 2014I just bought a new Mac Mini (Late 2014, ships with Yosemite) to replace a defunct MacBook Pro (Late 2008, last ran 10.8.5). I have a local administrative user account and some server and network data that I want to migrate from the latest Time Machine backup of the MacBook Pro to the Mini. I don't want to copy anything else to the Mini. Neither Setup Assistant nor Migration Assistant will let me deselect anything though. All the check boxes are greyed out. Clicking on them does not uncheck them. This forces me to copy everything from the Time Machine backup to the Mini. Then the Mini won't restart. It won't even boot into safe mode. It just gets stuck in a reboot-loop until I enter recovery mode, wipe the system drive, and reinstall Yosemite.

I am seriously not happy with the results (all I really wanted was to move my iTunes and a limited few apps, and it seems that I got nothing that I wanted). I've heard to use it for everything. Some have suggested using it for prefs and settings but not hard files. I've also heard NOT to use it if I'm migrating from a G4, which I am.
