MacBook Pro :: Transfer Files To New Computer Using Migration Set-Up Assistant?

Jul 2, 2012

I just purchased a new MacBook Pro as an upgrade from my MacBook Black Intel Core Duo. Is it better to set-up the new computer with my old files by connecting a FireWire between both computers or should I simply hook up my external hard drive with all my Time Machine Back-ups as the source for the new info?

OS X :: Using Migration Assistant To Transfer Files From Another Mac

I will be buying a new White MacBook soon. I want to share files between the new MacBook and my iMac (first gen. aluminum). Will the files I transfer from my iMac stay on my iMac once I transfer them? Migration Assistant seems to be the easiest way to transfer files from one Mac to another Mac from what I read from searching this forum. Also, I read in some threads that transfered files are sometimes hard to find on the new computer.

I have tried using the migration assistant. It will not go beyond my selecting a migration method - From another Mac. Nor am I able to use the system preferences file sharing options outlined on apple support. I am not permitted to select the internet sharing as instructed in step 3 (in issues with migration section)... so cannot proceed from there. Using the target option to transfer files isn't working either.

MacBook Pro :: Migration Assistant Allow Selective Transfer?

Mar 24, 2010

I'm buying a new 13" MBP in the next couple days, and I'd like to transfer some applications and files from my current MBP but not the entire hard drive contents. I've got a lot of junk on my current laptop and would like to start with a semi-fresh machine. Does Migration Assistant allow you to pick/choose what you want to transfer onto the new machine? Alternatively, could I just drag/drop files from a TM or SuperDuper backup on an external drive (for instance, will MS Office work on the new machine after this process)?

MacBook Pro :: Migration Assistant Did Not Transfer Network Or Computer Settings As Expected?

Jun 25, 2012

Snow Leopard (10.6.8) became corrupted resulting in not being able to shut down my 1/2007 Intel Core 2 Duo MacBookPro and not being able to download numerous programs and updates. I backed-up my laptop, took it into the Apple Store where they wiped the hard disc clean and reloaded the OS. They suggested I use Migration Assistant to restore my backed up information to my laptop, but ALL of my settings from Desktop, to the Dock, to Finder, to screen savers, to Safari bookmarks, to all of my Mail inboxes, archives and smart email boxes, and to Documents and all of my files and their organization, to iTunes, to Address Book, to Calendar are GONE. Do I need to do some more formal kind of a restore from my back-up drive to recover/restore this information and "get my laptop back" or is it all lost?

OS X :: Using Migration Assistant - Transfer Applications

Apr 9, 2009

I'm trying to transfer my applications, along with my music, to my macbook. I have my iMac backed up via time machine on an external drive. I hooked up my macbook to the external and ran migration assistant. I tried to transfer the applications, but it said - "create a new acct..existing user account is the same"

naturally, i use the same name for both my imac and macbook. so i changed the user name and account to my imac and my imac. so what is going to happen if i transfer this? does it create a new user account on my macbook with these programs or what? i dont understand what the issue with accounts is with migration assistant, seems like it would be easy if i could just transfer photo folder, etc without having to create different name. also when i transfer applications does it transfer all the info, preferences, etc?

OS X :: Possible Migration Assistant Errors And File Transfer

Dec 18, 2010

I have a G4 1.25 Ghz MDD desktop unit and have just purchased a 2010 Mac Pro. I have my Mac Pro all set up with the new software. I wanted to move documents to the Pro from the G4 using migration assistant. I made the necessary selections and deselections to copy documents, but not copy applications. I did not choose to copy users or settings. What I got was a copying of the applications [why, I don't know, since I did not request that], but not of the documents. I since have learned I needed to copy users, too, in order to get documents. I have an idea that I have some problems now because of the G4 software being on the Pro. Word, for example, saves very slowly; the saving is marked by prolonged spinning of the colored pizza of death. This machine has 12 Gb or RAM, so it is not a RAM issue.

I debate on trying to strip all the old mac's software out, but might miss something, or might remove something I don't want to remove. So, I consider just erasing the drive, reinstalling the OS, and reinstalling all my new software. Then, perhaps, moving documents in some more manual way. Can you connect two macs with ethernet or firewire and simply drag files between two finder windows? Rather than this migration assistant which seems to be able to cause problems? I do have two other internal drives, so I could build a new boot drive with new software as an alternative. The Mac Pro came with only two DVD's of software. Are those enough for a new install?

OS X :: New IMac - Migration Assistant Vs Manual Transfer

Feb 11, 2010

Eagerly awaiting my ship date for a new iMac (having been burned by two models with screen problems at the end of last year... another story). But I face three choices when it arrives to replace my trusty MB.

1. Use Migration Assistant to bring over apps, files, my library or everything.
2. Restore from my most recent Time Machine backup.
3. Manually re-install my apps and simply move across my files and folders.

Does anyone know whether there's any benefit to the "cleaner" option 3? Is there any difference between 1 and 2? I feel instinctively that my prinstine Snow Leopard-powered iMac would be better off for the minimalist option, but if there are no concrete advantages, I'll let Time Machine take the strain.

OS X Mountain Lion :: Migration Assistant - Not Enough Space For Transfer

Aug 29, 2014

I'm having a problem with Migration Assistant that's driving me crazy. I just bought a new Macbook Pro with a 256GB internal drive, and I have a backup of my old computer from last year that is about 350GB in size. What I am trying to do is individually take over some items from the Time Machine so that I don't fill up the HD. Here is what I have done so far:

I took over 100GB of an iTunes library as well as other system settings and documents. I had left something like 50GB on my internal hard drive. Not enough for my 109GB photo library.

So, I purchased a large SD card (128GB) to be the permanent home for my photo library. However, I had to maneuver some things around to get this to work, which has been a HUGE pain.

What I ended up doing was copying my whole iTunes library, which was about 98GB to the SD card. I juggled some other things around beforehand, and even though my photo file on the backup is only 109GB, it kept telling me I didn't have space. So I did the whole iTunes library instead of parts of it...

I now have 150GB free. Migration Assistant still tells me I don't have enough space for the transfer. How is that possible!? That's an extra 41GB of data.

I've already verified the HD on the macbook is fine via Disk Utility, not sure what else to do.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Migration Assistant Taking FOREVER To Transfer Data

May 17, 2012

Today I started a brand new MacBook Pro for the first time and followed the on-screen prompts to transfer data from an older Mac (MBP 2.16GHz Core2Duo running 10.6.8) via firewire. The procedure was different from the one I am accustomed to, which involves starting the old machine in target disc mode. This time, I was instructed to open Migration Assistant on the old MBP and select "from this Mac". This I did, whereupon it appeared that Migration Assistant on the new MBP established a connection with the old MBP, which was already connected to the new MBP with a Firewire cable. But once the transfer started, it progressed at a snail's pace. It started almost 5 hours ago and will very likely continue all night long. It occurred to me that the transfer is proceeding as though it were taking place over wi-fi.

Is it possible that OS X Lion took it upon itself to connect with the old MBP over wi-fi even though the two machines were wired together via Firewire? I do not recall having any opportunity to explicitly select Firewire as the transfer mode.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Migration Assistant File Transfer After Initial Account Setup

Mar 25, 2012

I tried using the migration assistant to transfer files (mainly pictures and word documents) from my old windows xp machine to my new macbook pro after the initial account setup, but I cannot find them. I know they are on the computer because of the decrease in free hard drive space. I had read on the internet that it may have created another user account and put the files there, but when I check in the users and groups, the only other account it shows is the guest, which I had had disabled. I would like to find out where the files are, and how I may be able to get them.
