Mac Pro :: Internal Drive Not Detected / Available

Sep 16, 2009

My Mac Pro, used very little as yet in this life following a fortuitous acquisition from my former company, is failing to recognize one of the three hard disks. I have a 320 gb system disk running Snow L, and two 500 gb disks which are currently empty of data. Following boot, the second of the 500 gb drives isn't available - it doesn't appear on my desktop, or in Finder, or in the side bar when I launch Disk Utility.

The system profile information returns a single line saying there was an error when trying to detect information about my disks - it doesn't give me information on any of them. In its previous life this disk was a mirrored RAID array (with the other 500 gb drive) used a shared file server for standard office documents etc in what I would call a modest load environment - it was no media studio!

MacBook Pro :: Internal HDD Isn't Detected Anymore While Booting

Jun 5, 2014

My internal hdd isn't detected anymore while booting.  What happened: after plugging in an USB-printer my macbook freezed immediately and I had to shut down by pressing 5 seconds on power button. I pressed power on button and my internal hdd isn't detected anymore while booting (question mark is blinking).

After replacement by a new ssd and booting via USB the new ssd isn't detected, too.Is the internal SATA3 cable broken or is it a defect of some kind of SATA3 controller assemled on mainboard?

MacBook Pro :: Crashed And Stopped Working - Internal Hardware Not Detected?

Aug 27, 2014

So recently my Mac crashed and stopped working as explained there: Major crash?

I was thinking, as everyone, that this problem was coming from the hardware. So I got a new one, and tried to install it. BUT the problem is still here! It just doesn't detect my internal hard drives anymore!! (For the ones who didn't read the original thread, the flashing folder with a question mark on it was appearing each time I was starting my mac, and I couldn't repair the disk since it wasn't detected.)

What could prevent my hard drives from being detected??

MacBook Pro :: Internal Microphone Not Being Detected On A Website Requiring Audio Input Recording?

Jun 21, 2014

When accessing the website; 'WhatUsersDo', which is used for testing websites, you are required to provide an audio recording of your thoughts about the website which you are testing, However, I am unable to submit an application to become one of the testers, as it is saying that I need to enable a microphone before I can continue with my application (as you are required to take a practice test during the application).

I have looked through other forums, and my microphone is working fine.

OS X :: Hard Drive Not Detected For Installation

Oct 27, 2010

Four days ago my Macbook pro stopped working while I was doing internet. I had to shut it down but it never booted up again. I tried multiple times to format it with disk utility but it never worked utile at my 25th attempt, disk utility finally detected it so I formatted it but when I tried to install OS X, the disk couldn't be detected just as before. I thought that my HD was dead so i bought a new western digital scorpio blue 320 GB 5400 rpm. Now, it's the same story as before, my new hard drive is never recognize by the installation cd.

More infos:
- The drive is turning (it has power)
- With my first HD, i couldn't open the OSX partition but I could open the Windows partition.
- With my new HD in, the installation cd of OS X and windows cant detect the hard drive.

MacBook Pro :: New Drive Not Automatically Detected?

Jul 16, 2010

I just upgraded my late model Penryn MBP from the stock Hitachi 200GB 5400rpm drive to a Seagate 500GB 7200rpm drive. Performance wise, I'm happy. XBench is indicating a significant gain on the disk test (especially in the sequential test) and I loved being able to use Quicksilver almost as soon as I saw the menubar. However, when I turned on the machine, it did not recognize the drive automatically, and I had to hold down the Option key in order to get it to boot from the disk. I cloned my old HD using CarbonCopy Cloner. Once I did that everything was (obviously) fine. How can I get the MBP to recognize my new disk as the default boot volume?

Mac Pro :: Failure Detected - Previous Drive Status Unassigned

Jan 28, 2010

Firstly here's my config...
MacPro4,1
x2 Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2.93 GHz
Intel X25-M 160 GB SSD (startup disk - second optical bay)
Apple Raid Card
x4 300 GB VelociRaptor - WD3000HLFS (Raid 0 set - 1.2 TB)
Quadro FX 4800
16 GB RAM

Now, to the issue...
When I start up this Mac I receive the following error via the Raid Utility...
Drive 0: failure detected - Previous drive status was unassigned
The Raid Set is not mounted and one of the VR drives are not displaying within the set. I can also not mount the Raid Set at this point. So I then clear the event within the Raid Utility and I then restart the Mac and all is good. No Raid errors, the Raid set (volume) is mounted and all 4 VR drives are present within the set. There is no data loss on the Raid Set and the cycle continues. Basically, I have to go through this procedure every time I startup.

This has worked fine, but...My second internal HD (112 gig?) is still loaded with 10.3 and has adobe CS2 on it along with some other crap that I no longer need.I have loaded Adobe CS3 on my primary drive and have all the files I need on that one...What is the best way to set up my second HD as a "slave" drive to improve the performance of my G5 dual 2 Ghz??Will there be any issues now that I loaded Leopard on the primary HD?

Intel Mac :: How To Transfer All Data From Old Internal Hard Drive To A New Internal Hard Drive?

Feb 10, 2012

How do I transfer all data from my old internal hard drive to a new internal hard drive? I have an iMac with a 320gb internal HD that is full and I am replacing it with a 2tb internal drive. I have several external drives; 1 tb, 2tb and 3 tb. The 2 tb is being used for Time Machine. Do I have to buy an enclosure? If so, where would I get an inexpensive one? I also want to partition the new internal drive for Windows, and I'm not sure how much space to use for that. I plan to use Windows to check my work in PowerPoint created on my Mac for clients on PCs.

Hardware :: External USB Drive Not Detected In Single User Mode

Dec 30, 2009

I have a Macbook Air somehow has lost/ damaged the user DB as none of the none of the user accounts are available. In single user mode, I have checked the users in the password file and my username is not listed. I tried changing the root password but I was unable to logon. I tried deleting the .AppleSetupDone file, but it always hangs on trying to configure computer. I tried adding a user but im getting errors using dscl. My last resort is to just copy the user files using SUM and then reinstall. My problem is that I am unable to detect my usb drive in SUM. It does not show up when I do ls /dev/disk* but I do get a message when I disconnect the usb drive. I do not have an OS disk, nor do I have a superdrive with me. I just want to mount the USB drive and copy the files in SUM.

OS X :: Hard Drive Makes Clicking Sound / Move Apps From Internal Drive To New One?

Feb 19, 2010

I have a Dual 1.8 G5 and my hard drive has started to make a clicking sound every now and then. I believe it may be on the verge of dying anyday. Since i have space to put in another internal hard drive i am planning to get a WD Black Caviar 1TB and put it in.

Now my question is how do i move all my application from the old internal drive to the new internal drive. From what i have researched it seems that using a enclosure is the way to go but all the info i have seen is referring to replacing the drive rather adding a new one.I would like to move everything to the new drive and make that a master. What is the best way to perform this task?

Hardware :: Unable To Transfer Music From External Drive / Reformat The Internal Drive?

Jun 13, 2010

I recently bought a macbook pro and am making the transition from a pc to mac. It's all gone well so far, but I'm not sure what to do with my music. I currently have about 200 gb of music on my external hard drive (connected to my pc.) The internal hard drive on my pc does not have space to accomodate the files on my external.

I do not have the "Copy files to iTunes music folder" currently enabled because my internal doesn't have space. (And I like having the original music files in a separate location as I have over 30,000 songs). I don't know how to transfer my external and music to my macbook, since I will have to reformat the drive (which would erase everything on it, therefore I somehow have to make a backup either on my mac or on my pc. but what to do about the iTunes .xml file and iTunes folder on the internal pc drive??).

IMac :: Second Internal Hard Drive In Place Of Optical Drive?

Feb 5, 2010

I did a search but couldn't find any specific info as related to the 20" (late 2006) iMac. Basically, I do a lot of audio work with Logic and DP and I'm interested in replacing my 20" iMac's optical drive with a second internal hard drive. If anyone has any experience or insight regarding this, I would greatly appreciate your input. About 6 months ago, I did a DIY replacement of my iMac's internal hard drive (upgrade to 1 tb), so I'm pretty sure I'd like to DIY an optical drive / hard drive swap - that is, if it's 1) Proven to work stably (thermally and otherwise) 2) Not going to require the iMac's fan to be running faster/louder than normal Looking at my iMac's system profiler, the DVD drive is on an ATA bus (which, as I remember it, is slower than S-ATA). What kind of transfer rates do you think one could realistically expect with a hard drive on this ATA bus? Also, would I have to be careful about new hard drive compatibility, or are S-ATA and S-ATA II backwards compatible with ATA?

OS X :: External FW800 Drive Almost As Fast As Internal Laptop Drive?

May 16, 2010

I just bought a 640gig Samsung 2.5 inch / 5400rpm drive and threw it in a FW800 case from Other world computing. Running some test using the QuickBench 4 and AJA system test shows me that this little bugger is almost as quick as my internal drive on my MacBook Pro (Model number: WDC WD6400BEVT-00A0RT0). How can this be???? I did a varity of test with different file sizes and the Samsung get 70 MB/s vs about 84 MB/s for the internal drive.

My internal drive is pretty full vs this external drive that is currently empty. I do a lot of video work / large gigabyte files on the drive so perhaps I have a defrag problem? I really expected my internal drive to blow the FW800 connected Samsung out the water?

MacBook Pro :: Replacing Internal Drive With Larger Drive On 17"?

Apr 8, 2012

I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro 17" computer.  I bought a 750gb Hitachi drive in an upgrade kit from OWC.  I have formatted it and now using Carbon Copy Cloner am making a copy of the internal 500gb drive.  I am not very familiar with Mac OS X drive partitions.  When Carbon Copy Cloner copies the 500gb partition from my Pro, will it leave the other 250gb or will I need to use Disk Utility or somethng else to format the remaining space? I would like to put the 750gb in the Pro moving the current 500gb into the external housing if possible.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Bootable Drive Supersedes Internal Drive

Mar 17, 2012

I did a backup to a partitioned firewire drive using superduper

I want to keep the drive hooked up and on because I save other things to the other (non superduper) partition.

But when I restart my imac, it invariably chooses to boot up via the superduper partition instead of the interior boot drive of the mac.

Do I always have to shut the fw drive down and restart it AFTER booting up imac?

The HDD is arriving Tuesday, once I have installed what will I have to do to it to make it a part of my current HDD. I assume Im looking at a RAID 0 using disk utility?

Before I do that will I have to install 10.5 on the HDD or just use disk utility to format it?
