Mac Pro :: Important For Back Up Drive To Be Fast?

Jun 18, 2008

I am going to pick up my mac pro today. I will be ordering HDs soon after. How important is it to have my 4th drive (backup) be fast? I will be getting 1 WD 640 aaks, 2 samsung spinpoints, and a 4th for back up. Should I get another spinpoint or just go with a seagate for reliability?

OS X :: External FW800 Drive Almost As Fast As Internal Laptop Drive?

May 16, 2010

I just bought a 640gig Samsung 2.5 inch / 5400rpm drive and threw it in a FW800 case from Other world computing. Running some test using the QuickBench 4 and AJA system test shows me that this little bugger is almost as quick as my internal drive on my MacBook Pro (Model number: WDC WD6400BEVT-00A0RT0). How can this be???? I did a varity of test with different file sizes and the Samsung get 70 MB/s vs about 84 MB/s for the internal drive.

My internal drive is pretty full vs this external drive that is currently empty. I do a lot of video work / large gigabyte files on the drive so perhaps I have a defrag problem? I really expected my internal drive to blow the FW800 connected Samsung out the water?

Mac Pro :: Fast 1TB Hard Drive?

Feb 10, 2009

What would be a good terabyte hard drive to use in my Mac Pro?

I want something that will be able to handle DV and HDV video editing really well.

So what is the fastest 1tb or higher drive I can get.

Looking to pay around $90-$150 on the drive.

I was looking at the SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB.

But I am not sure their would be a faster drive out there by now?

Mac Pro :: Best Fast Hard Drive That Isn't An SSD?

Dec 28, 2009

I'm getting myself a new Mac Pro shortly and will be looking into faster hard drives.

I had an SSD in my last Mac Pro, and while it was fast (Gskill Falcon 128gb) it was just too small.

And to be honest I didn't find it *that* much faster is common use than the 150gb velociraptor.

Until the larger SSD's come down in price I'm going to go with something else. What would be my best choice. Is there anything better than the 300gb Velociraptor. I've read somewhere that there might be some 2tb drives that are nearly as fast. Is that true? I can't seem to find anything to really support that argument at the moment, other than hearsay and innuendo.

Hardware :: Fast USB Flash Drive?

I'm looking around for a USB flash drive stick that is fast enough to run OS X off of it. So I'm thinking an 8GB or 16GB, but any idea on what is a good speed? I've tried it out already on a USB stick I just had lying around, but it runs pretty slow. What's the fastest flash drive out there right now?

MacBook Air :: How Fast Is The MBA's 4200 RPM Drive?

Dec 13, 2009

My dad really needs a new laptop, and I wanted to get him either an MBP or MBA. I'd like to keep the price beneath $1500, and lower is better. He is by no means a power user, but travels a lot, so weight is a concern. Right now, he literally has a 10 year old, 600 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 4 GB HDD, 2'' thick Dell. Yeah, it's bad.

I think the MBA would be plenty fast for his needs, but my only concern is with the slower, 4200 RPM drive. How slow is it? I have a netbook with a 5400 RPM 160 GB HDD, so it's probably slower than that, right? By a lot?

An SSD would be nice (from Runcore or another 3rd party), but that would add another $300 to the price, and even if I got a refurbished Rev B, the price would probably be more than I'd like to spend.

MacBook Pro :: Which Fast 500GB Hard Drive From Unibody (1st Gen)?

Sep 11, 2010

I use my macbook pro mostly for pro audio work so I think I'll probably need 7,200 speed (which I currently have)

I want quiet, extremely reliable and fast. I've seen the following:

Seagate Momentus - I've heard it's noisy and viberates and maybe not so reliable?

WD Scorpio Blue - I think only available in 5,400 speed

Hitachi spinpoint - again only in 5,400 speed

MacBook Pro :: External Hard Drive With Fast File Transfer?

Mar 1, 2010

I am assuming firewire would be the quickest, what about the firewire 800 or w/e it is in the macbook pros though? Is USB 2.0 significantly slower than the firewire? I want to buy a external HDD that is around 500gb in size and can transfer over files just like my normal HDD is. 100% of the time that the MBP is home it will be attached to this. I want to put almost everything there is on my laptop over onto the external hard drive except for stuff I need (which then I'd just pull it onto the desktop) when I leave the house. I'm assuming the western digital 500gb passport essential is the best buy, but I don't know much about it at all. It's only USB 2.0, which sounds like the slowest option when you throw firewire in the search.

Hardware :: Is An IPS Display THAT Important?

Mar 10, 2009

I'm about to get a new Mac Pro (the most modest configuration) and I'll be using it primary for music production (i.e. Logic). I won't really be doing anything graphics intensive. At best, I'll watch the occasional movie on it and play a game or two.

The thing about the ACDs is that they're so expensive! So I'm wondering, is it really worth it for someone like me to fork over $899, or should I stick with a cheaper one in the $300-$400 range? I'm going to need to get two eventually...

OS X :: How Important Is A Firmware Password

Mar 1, 2010

Can someone point me to a link or provide some clarity on what NOT having a firmware password means in terms of security and, as a home user, do i need to put on on?

All my personal files are in 'Knox' dmgs - i work out of the dmgs - works perfectly. But i dont know for sure where else other background/usage info is stored on the computer.

I remember i while back reading that without firmware password if someone got your mbp (physical possession) then they could reset the password and get into your user account (with mac osx cd) ... can someone confirm (im reasonably sure this is correct).

I had the password on my last mbp but havent got around to putting it on this new one. I was about to today but its been awhile and maybe there is new information or perspective for me to consider.

How many of you have a password installed?

What are the pro's & con's?

Considering that I boot on both windows (bootcamp) and osx, would the ram be recognized immediately? Or do i have to install or do something first before it does. Is it more advisable to reformat the whole computer? Maybe because of some performance issues.

OS X :: How To Create New Account And Move Important Stuff

Sep 12, 2009

Did an archive and install of Leopard then installed Snow Leopard. 90% of Video sites would not work. Uninstalled and reinstalled Flash. Uninstalled ShockWave, tried to reinstall received message could not reinstall with 10.6.1. Attempt to install adobe air, received this message: "couldn't write the application to hard drive - please verify and try again." performed verify disk, disk permissions, repair permissions all ok. Attempted to install Air again, same message.

Tried to use Time Machine to open Safari from a week ago, received message: I did not have permission.
Using Macbook Pro, 2g memory, 80g hd, with 42g free.
Backed up on ext. HD,
One more, getting a lot of spinning wheels when using Safari that causes a lockup and hard re-start.

I have an expensive piece of software that uses adobe air and I create videos for my business and I'm not able to do so now. I just logged off of my admin account and logged on with a guest account. Video and flash seem to be working with the guess account. I didn't check adobe air or TM. How can I create a new account and move the important apps, files, docs, etc. that I need from the main account to the new one. Al of my business is setup on the mail account, emails, downloads etc.

Final Cut Pro X :: 10.1.2 Update - Cannot Open One Important Project

Jul 2, 2014

I have update FCP to 10.1.2 yesterday and now i can't open one project that i have to re-edit now.

It's a 1.30 min editing project with a hundred of clips in that specific event, clips are still there and i can preview each one with no issues (same for others events and projects that i'm editing now) but when i'm trying to open this particular project (double click) FCP shows evey time a spinning wheel and freezes, its RAM's usage goes to the moon and i have to force quitting.

What i've tried:

1- pick up a backup file and use it deleting the corrupt one in my library (i've used 3 different files from 3 different days, no luck)
2 - deleting preferces (alt+command+click to launch)
3 - deleting generated event files
4 - deleting .flexolibrary file
5 - using Onyx to clean my Mac Pro
6 - shutting down and rebooting

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Spotlight Not Working / Other Important Systems Compromised

May 28, 2012

I have a slightly older MacBook. It was purchased when leopard was out, but has been upgraded to lion, with ram added.Had no problems with the OS until I installed the seagate diagnostics software about a week ago at their recommendation.During the install, the computer hung during the shutdown of the mandatory restart. It took me a pram reset to get the machine to start up again. Since then, the following has been a problem:

-Spotlight has no index and won't search.

-The computer will not shut down, have to pull the plug.

-Finale (which uses java runtime) doesn't work, and the auto install of java run time won't go in.

-Software update starts, but the percentage bar freezes after a moment.

I have run the system restore partition, which went in okay, but did not change anything.I have also followed the steps to uninstall the seagate diagnostic software. However the problem still persists.I'm guessing there is some sort of shut down script that is hanging the system, and preventing indexing from happening which prevents all of these other processes from happening.Does anyone have any ideas for what to do next?

OS X Mavericks :: Lost Most Important Entry In Favorites In Finder?

Jun 21, 2014

I just setup a Seagate external drive to become my offsite backup. I am a new iMac user. I dragged and dropped my most important folders (using Finder) onto the Seagate drive (to copy them over) but probably I did something incorrectly because the Document folder which has all my important files disappeared from under Favorites in Finder and did not show up on the Seagate.  I can no longer access what I need as there is no easy way to locate my files which were grouped in a multi level, nicely organized file structure under Documents, to make it easy for me to locate my work.

Now, Finder shows under Favorites: All My Files, Airdrop, Applications, Desktop, Downloads, Logins. Previously it also had an entry for Documents, now missing. Using All My Files I can locate the files I worked on yesterday, so they are still on the hard drive.
