Mac Pro :: How To Fax Without Phone Line Or Modem
Dec 21, 2010
I have a mac pro (intel) and macbook pro (intel). OS X 10.6, both without modems. I need to fax maybe 1-5 pages a month and am tired of going to the local mailboxes etc. And paying $1 page. My multiprinter Canon MP500 does not fax. I know I can join an efax type system but that's $80 a year. Are there any software programs to download and takes care of 'Sending" faxes without a modem or fax machine. Looked a pagesender but that requires a efax type of account. Just want to convert a scan into a fax and send it without adding another telephone line or piece of hardware.

I am so glad to have a mac with a modem to receive fax that make my work more efficient than before. But the problem is: The Apple USB modem have only one port that occupied my only telephone port in my house. But as there is hard to buy a phone-line adapter or separator in the stores anymore in my city. And I find that the software phone programs uses modem to make phone calls are "Dead".

So once in a blue moon I have to step back in time a bit a send someone a fax. Its seems like I should be able to fax anything as long as it is "scanned" into my computer. Is it possible to send a fax from my Mac without a phone line, through my cable modem internet connection?

I have this nifty device called a "Magic Jack" [URL] which turns any USB port on any internet-connected computer into a hard phone line.
I'm now behind a network at school, and it's not working properly.
Customer service says that I need to "open ports such and such, and forward them to my IP"... but they don't know how to do that with a mac.

Quick question - I have a cable line running from my wall to my cable modem, which in turn connects via ethernet cable to an AEBS. The AEBS provides wireless connectivity to four Macs.
Can I split the cable line in my room so that I may watch TV, or would this cut my download/upload bandwidth in half?

I just received a usb cable to connect my samsung phone to my ibook. The computer does not recognize my phone when I plug it in. Additionally, they sent a mini disc with it. Is there something I am supposed to do to get this to work?

Is there any sort of "bridge" software that allows a terminal emulation program, say, Z-Term, to use Skype as a modem? It seems silly to pay for connections to BBS's when I've got SkypeOut, but I haven't been able to find a way to do this.

I have all these albums and songs on my phone and I don't know where they came from. I haven't downloaded them, they aren't in my library and I haven't synced with another computer. I have done a sync over and over anot nothing. I have even done a synch and took all the music off. I think it is 'other' stuff but don't know how to get it off of there.

Double poll here. There are two questions:
How much DATA do you have Oo-line?
This is data and not total capacity. This includes all your on-line data: music, images, video, the OS, all of it. It doesn't include back-up data even if it's on-line like Time Machine tho. Just active data.
And of the on-line storage devices used for that DATA totally, what % are they filled to?
For example if you had two 500 GB drives and about 400 GB of data you would answer:
"I have < 500 GB of DATA on-line." and,"My on-line storage is between 25% and 50% full.".

i'm having some issues recording in garage band which should hopefully be easy to clear up. i record an instrumental track into garage band through the line-in jack in the back. the track shows up in garage band just fine and plays, but i'm running into trouble recording while that track is playing. i plug my headphones in so i can try to hear the track while i am recording vocals, but i am unable to hear the track. i checked the inputs/outputs in system preferences and output is set to headphones, microphone is set to line in. so i'm not too sure what it could be.

I've had this problem since Friday with my Mac Pro (March 2009) and haven't been able to solve it.
On Friday my speakers suddenly stopped working. After first having confirmed that the speakers were working with another source, I tried headphones both in frontal headphone slot and with the analog line out in the back, both without success. There's a red light in the optical audio out, indicating that it's on for some reason, although I have selected different audio out source. The internal speaker works just fine, only the normal audio out doesn't give me anything.
I found a thread in the MBP section similar to this problem, but solutions for MBP didn't work.

I'd like to use my mac (Imac and Macmini) for sending/receiving faxes and perhaps for CPI (computer phone integration).I have obtained a USRobotics usb modem. The question I have is do I need to connect that modem to the same connection (using a splitter) to where my telephone handset is ?If I connect this usb modem from the macmini to the phone line (not where the handset is), can I then use the Imac to connect to the phone for fax/cpi|? It is all the same phone line and on the same wifi.

Seems like it should be a straight forward deal, but it's not obvious how to make this happen. I can tell the audio is coming in, as the input levels are reflected under System Pref's. But I can't hear the audio on the line-out speakers and there doesn't seem to be an option to explicitly route the audio.Â

I have a 2nd monitor and hooked up my xbox 360 to it. I have it connected through HDMI and then have a regular audio jack going from the monitor to my Mac Pro. When I open up my sound preferences and select: Line In - Audio Line In the "Input Level" bar goes up and down meaning it is registering or hears the sound coming from my xbox.
For some reason though, the sound will not output from my Mac Pro. My speakers which are connected to Line Out: Built In Line Output still outputs sound coming from my mac pro but it won't output the sound from my 360. Is there a remedy for this?
So quickly again.
Line In - Audio Line In is "hearing" the sound from my xbox 360 as the "Input Level" bar goes up and down.
Line Out - Built In Line Output still outputs sound from my Mac Pro but not the 360.
Is there a way to fix this?

My line out port on my late 2007 white macbook recently died and I no longer have AppleCare. I never use the line in port on my computer and use the line out quite alot. I have tried all kinds of fixes to fix the problem but nothing works. I would like to use the line in port as a line out port. I am not sure if this is possible so I thought I would ask here if anyone knew of a way.

I am aware that I can e-mail these things, but a few required me to fax them. My wife wants me to buy a fax machine even though I just need to fax something once in a while.
I have a Power Mac G4 using MAC OS 10.5.8. My Internet, TV, and Phone connections are cable from Cable Vision in New York. My computer has an internal 56K V.92 modem on the back. I used one end of a regular phone line jack to connect to the internal modem and the other end to the phone line. When I tried to fax something I kept getting a message that said "Waiting for modem to become available." I cannot fax anything from the computer.

I am trying to send and receive faxes from my internal modem on my macbook pro. I think the port I am plugging the phone line into is an ethernet port. Does this double up as a modem port or is there no port for me to plug in to?
I have tried everything else and think this is the problem.
If I cannot plug my phone line into the port how can I send and receive faxes on my computer?

I have a Mac Book Pro running VMWare Fusion and Vista loaded. I recently purchased the USB modem from Apple with hopes of having Vista recognize it and be able to use dial-up. Yes I know why dial-up, I am a Technician who has to remotely connect to customer sites for maintenance-changes etc.. Vista will not recognize the modem nor is there any driver support through Apple for this scenario. Any suggestions or tricks would be great? Oh yeah, if i get this to work my company will deploy all Mac products .

I have an AT&T Express 3G card I use to use with my MBP (which I sold yesterday). I am picking up a MacBook Air today during my lunchbreak . Since the MBA does not have an express slot, I have the following options for high speed internet on the go:
1. Get a USB 3G Modem or get a USB adapter for my current express card. The only problem is it would stick out and take up the only USB port on the MBA.
2. Get a 3G phone capable of sharing the connection over bluetooth. It would look seemless, but I would have to make sure the phone is charged. I currently use an iPhone as my main phone.
I take a train ride everyday to and from work, so I've gotten used to (spoiled?) having high speed internet. If I go with option 2, I would probably get a phone that is not that feature packed, I just want a stable and reliable connection, as thats all I would be using it for.

I've just gotten a new Sony Ericsson w350, and everything is working fine, except that I see that it connects to Internet Explorer to transfer music. Upon looking this up, it says it should still work to transfer music using a drag and drop and appearing as a USB on my mac.

i managed to get on the at&t all you can eat $29 data plan for ipad, but no longer have the ipad (gave it away, was not using it enough). however, i kept the sim.
i'm thinking of putting the microsim in a modem and using it in my mbp... however, i was hoping to get some recommendations. any one using one in the SD slot or a general USB one (the SD slot is why i posted this in the MBP forum, mods!).
realize the software is not built in, so that would be a pretty key requirement. i hate the idea of os 10.7 coming out and having to wait six months for drivers

My ISP requires that I connect via PPPoE. The lame ISP doesn't even have a quick setup [auto setup] process via CD or dmg. No problem as PPPoE isn't a problem even though I don't like it. If anything goes wrong I'm always having to fiddle with my PPPoE settings in Airport Utility etc. Sort of a nuisance. I'm using my Airport Express and get dropouts quite often. Could be torrent throttling, maybe not. The modem I have is the stock ISP modem which I don't like anyway because it only has one LAN port. I was thinking of buying my own modem. Can you buy any modem? Would that eliminate the requirement for a PPPoE connection? Is PPPoE required because of the the modem or ISP or both?

I'm using the Assistant to try to add a USB modem to my network settings. However, the option for "I use a telephone modem to dial my ISP" can't be selected. (please see attached screen grab). I've tried this under Tiger (10.4), Leopard (10.5) and, Snow Leopard (10.6). No luck in any of the last three Mac OS's.

I have a wireless network set up at my home. I have two laptops that were both working fine on the network at one point. Laptop A still works fine, thus the network is working. Laptop B cannot connect to the internet via this network but the airport connection on that machine is completely full.
In my system preferences > Network Panel I am able to see the green light suggesting that I am connect to the network and that I am also connect to the internet via this airport.
It is also worth noting that the same machine works fine connecting to the internet at my office via the airport there as well as other airport networks.
I am at a loss because the fact that laptop A works on the network rules out the network as the issue and the fact that laptop B works on other wireless network suggests that the settings are correct. Both machines are running the same OS 10.6 ( latest updates)
