Mac Pro :: 8800GT Play Games At 2560x1600 Resolution?

View 5 RepliesI was waiting to buy a new Macbook Pro but as soon as they were released today I said "meh" and decided maybe I should buy a brand new iMac and keep my Early 08 MBP. I want to get a new Mac in preparation for the upcoming launch of Steam on OS X and just because mine is long in the tooth for Windows gaming.
Anyways... I just had a thought and was wondering if any owners could clear it up. The resolution on the 27 i7 Quad Core seems ENORMOUS for a middle-grade ATI GPU. Are you able to game on high settings for semi-modern games like L4D2, TF2, etc. at the 27"'s native resolution? What are your thoughts on it as a gaming machine. It seems like the 27" will obsolete itself quicker than a i5/i7 21 inch (if one ever comes out) due to the screen resolution size.
this is getting highly frustrating, I first used a 'copy' of XP SP2, tried all the drivers, boot camp, nvidia, omega and the beta from guru3d and making sure each install is clean. And i've yet to see one frame of gameplay from demos of Crysis, The Club and Kayne & Lynch. Crysis would hard crash just before you parachute out, and the sound would divert to the internal speaker and just keep stuttering.
When using the 2600XT everything is fine, so its definately the card/drivers.
Then i went out and brought a copy of Vista 64-bit (not as bad as i thought it would be btw), and now i can't even get past the opening text of the crysis demo without experiencing a serious crash.
I'm so glad i didn't custom build my mac pro with the 8800GT, i would have had to wait all that time just to find its pretty much useless for games, and it seems the 2600XT actually performs better with Final Cut Studio... apart from having an extra graphics card i'm finding it hard to see why i should keep this card, it seems like a complete waste of time, unless some better drivers come out at some point.
From what i've read on the net it seems i'm not the only one experiencing this, most are lucky to experience gameplay only to experience a crash after a few minutes. Has anyone been able to play games successfully with the 8800GT and if so what did you do?
I have an iBook clamshell with os X 10.3.9 running. I want to play some older games, like Diablo 1, squirrel kombat, etc.
What I can't find out anywhere is how to change the resolution for games. I know for older games (at least on PC) that there was a file that stored your settings, like sound card, resolution, etc.
I can't find anything like that here. Diablo 1 says that it needs to have a minimum of 640 X 480. I want to set it at 800 X 600.
Update, it looks like Diablo is running in classic mode (I thought it would run in OS X) anyway, the question is still the same!

How well do games look on the current apple 30" at resolutions of 1920 or 1600?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have the fully loaded 3.06GHz iMac with the upgraded video card. The native resolution is 1920x1200, which even with the iMac's decent specs, is a hefty performance dump being forced to run games in this high resolution. When I try lowering the resolution, literally every other resolution option looks like crap, while 1920x1200 looks crisp and perfect. Most of the other options aren't a matching aspect ratio for the widescreen monitor. Is there a good resolution you recommend, and if it isn't available in my game, is there a way to make it available?
Do I need to hack each game to display other resolution options that match my aspect ratio? How can I get better performance besides turning the graphics to crap? I would be happy running in a lower resolution with all other settings maxed, rather than most settings low with such a high resolution.
Do I have any options here or am I screwed? I'm sure some of you guys must have come across this issue! I'm a new Mac convert who can't get rid of my PC gaming.
Note: Preferably I would like to find an alternate widescreen resolution, rather than finding a way to use 4:3 with black bars, but either would be better than how it is now.
I am looking to buy a second graphics card as I now have a third monitor. Will all of the above cards work with an existing 8800GT?

View 29 Replies View Relatedplaying games through bootcamp. Especially with Call of Duty 4. It freezes up constantly in the menus and just has lots of problems. Some games wont run at all in bootcamp, but the odd thing is that all these problems don't ever occur when I open the games in Parallels. Granted frame rates are a lot lower of course, but the games function fine. also noticed when playing Modern Warfare 2 today with my friend, my macbook pro blows his HP out of the water when comparing the in-game Frame rates and graphics, but his menus and loading screens go sooo much faster.

Would it be possible to connect a PS3(or PS3 slim) to my iMac 21.5"? I want to use the iMac as a monitor for the PS3 in order to play games. Has anyone tried it before, and if so what are your results?
View 1 Replies View Relatedi bought a imac 27" quad core i5, and like in my previous imac 20" i created a partition to play my games in bootcamp...but this time i installed the W7 64bit ( used the trick command promt on instalation to del c:windowssystem32driversatikmdag.sys if im not mistaken, to get the screen to work and finnish the instalation ) did everything by the book, installed drivers from OS X dvd, then bootcamp 3.1.
But all my games ( pes 2010, resident evil 5 and OF dragon rising) dont work! the only one that works is company of heroes ( 2006? ) PES 2010 installs but when start .exe gave me a message ( doesn't work on 64bit OS only 32bit ) the other 2 don-t even let me install them appearing the same message of incompatibility...so...i installed W7 32bit ultimate...now the messages didnt show, instead, a black window ( look like DOS ) appears and disappears in a sec, in PES after instalation, when trying to run the game, on the other 2, on the attempt to install the games just like in the 64bit version. i rolled back to what i thought it would work, since i know there are some issues with W7 and imac, the XP SP3! with same results on W7 32bit...pops a window like DOS, for a milisec, and disappears.
why does it warm up when i play mac apps

View 7 Replies View RelatedSo I've finally saved up for a Macbook, I'll probably get the 13" 2.26 model then upgrade the hardrive and ram myself.
So;
1. Could you recommend a good hardrive and ram please, I'm in the UK.
http://www.dabs.com/products/hitachi...3-5--4THP.html Would this be any good?
2. Bit of a vague question but, can you play any games on it? I mainly play on the ps3, but I do enjoy games such as Football manager and Empire: Total War would these run on it? If its been disscussed elsewhere links would be good
3. I'll need to put a copy of XP on to it unfortunatly and I think bootcamp is best for playing games, but if I bought parallels does this use the same partion as bootcamp or would I have to create a 3rd partition?
What is the Best way to play PC only games on a mac. From what I have read I assume Boot Camp is the best, but am not quite sure. If I wanted to go the virtualization route, which would be better for gaming, VMware Fusion or Parallels?
View 3 Replies View RelatedIt's going to be used mainly for work, which involves me having multiple programs at once open, including word, powerpoint, graphpad, endnote, internet, mail, and probably itunes.
Also, I play WoW and want to play SC2 on at least high settings ideally. I currently have a 24" monitor at home that I could either hook a laptop up to, or get a average gaming desktop.
NewEgg just dropped the price to $125 shipped for 500gb. I'm thinking about getting it. It's either that or a Scorpio Blue 750gb.Now, what do I do with my laptop? I play Steam games (at times, as they usually run horribly slow), I surf on Chrome, I use Mail, Excel, and iTunes. I also DJ using Traktor Scratch Pro.I bootcamp to play MOST of my games. I know this is a factor for the caching etc.I'm not in DIRE need of space. I have 50gb left, and multiple seasons of different television shows on my hdd. Not to mention several movies. I am a virtual pack rat of sorts, I guess, and I like to carry my media with me. I often use my laptop hooked up to an HDTV for viewing TV shows and movies.
