Mac Pro :: 2008 With 4870x2 - Can't Get It Up With 10.6.2

Feb 1, 2010

I have a MacPro here with a 4870x2 connected, (using Apple's mini onboard PCIe 12v rails to supply power) in slot 2. (1x 24" Dell connected via DVI)OEM 2600 is in the 1st/bottom slot. (2 x 24" Dells connected via DVI)

I Decided to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard, but am having a hell of a time getting the 4870x2 up and running. (PC side is obviously fine)

A couple of questions...

First of all... anyone got the 1-core driver active and happening so far? because I just assumed that it would be, considering it worked in Leopard.

Secondly, do I use the same instructions/howto that's for hackintosh's over at this forum?

I have tried the above, (both the "accel" download and the updated instructions/downloads to no avail)

At the moment, a vanilla install knows the card is there, as the "Arrangement" tab in the Displays System Preferences is coming up with 3 displays connected at 1920x1200, but the Dell screen connected to the 4870x2 is black. (orange standby light on)

After applying the updated instructions from the above link, I get a corrupted array of horizontal pixels just after the grey Apple logo on my 2600HD connected Dell screen. Other 2 displays are black during this and the whole machine is locked up... (not KP'd but screen sharing is not available either)

If someone has got this happening, could you please carefully outline your procedure step by step and also include links to files you used to get this card happening in 10.6.

Mac Pro :: Crossfire Working In OSX With The Goal Of Running A 4870x2?

Jun 15, 2009

The limitation for getting a 4870x2 working in OSX seems to be the lack of crossfire support. Crossfire is available in Linux and BSD, though I'm not sure to what extent and how well. So serious question time: What will it take to get crossfire working in OSX with the goal of running a 4870x2??? Seems to me it should be possible, I just don't know how.

The choices are:

I will not play games on my mac. It's gonna be a machine strictly for work, meaning Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Flash, Email, web, eventually maybe also Cinema 4D.

Mac Pro :: Major 2008 RAM ECC Types?

Aug 16, 2008

After much research on the interweb I've finally realized I've lost the plot, so time to ask the experts....

I've just bought some Kingston KTA-MP800K2/4G RAM from here. The website says it's non-ECC yet the same product from here says it is ECC. This "yes it is/no it isn't" repeated throughout my searches. I bought my Mac with 4x1Gb of Apple's RAM which I'm guessing is ECC(?).

These are my questions:
1. Does anyone know what the correct ECC status is for this product (the Kingston website was no use at all!)

2. I'm reading that it is you shouldn't mix ECC types but what are the consequences of doing so?

3. Is there any software tool to run that can check if my installed RAM is ECC or not, or check everything is happy and compatible?

4. Am I being pointlessly paranoid!?

I do a lot of motion graphics and 3d work so it's important to me everything is tuned up and working as smoothly as possible.

Mac Pro :: 2008 Versus Sun Ultra 40

Nov 24, 2009

This is more a hardware related questions, OS X doesn't play a big role:

I have the chance to buy a Sun Ultra 40 for about 600$ (2x2.4 Opteron, 8 GB RAM, 500GB SATA HDD, Raid Controller, 8800 GTS) or for 1600$ a MacPro (2008 model, 2x2.66 DualCore Xeon, 3GB RAM, 250GB HDD).

It'll be my private machine which I use for private software development (WPF/Silverlight) (so I'm not in an environment where even the time for compiling is money which can be saved :-)). Also I don't use it for playing games or similar.

Mac Pro :: SSD Software RAID 0 In A 2008 MP?

Feb 17, 2010

I have read through the related posts in the forum, but I was hoping to receive final confirmation before purchasing.

I have a 2008 Mac Pro, with all four drive bays filled, and I was looking at placing two Intel X25-Vs (40 GB) in software RAID 0 in the optical bay (no mount - just sitting in there), to be used as my boot drive. I was going to use the two free SATA connectors on the logic board to connect the drives.

First, will this setup be bottlenecked anywhere, and/or would you recommend a different setup to achieve the same thing? I also am not quite sure what cables I would need as I am shockingly inexperienced at DIY.

My usage pattern is primarily running Logic and ESX24 to run the Vienna Symphonic Library to play my (classical) compositions, with some audio mixing to bring in the vocal elements (I'm working on an opera right now, for which I will use MIDI and voice). I'm hoping to get a performance boost in Logic from installing the SSDs.

MacBook Pro :: Can Late 2008 Use 8GB

I've currently got a macbook pro which currently has 4Gb ram and I want to know if it can be upgraded to 8Gb. [URL] Mode A1621, Boot Rom MB41.00C1.B03 I've read a number of postings which indicate 4GB is the official supported amount by Apple,  6Gb will work (unofficially) and this posting [URL] indicates some late 2008s can be upgraded to 8gb after a EFI update.. however mine comes up as a MacBook pro 4,1 not 5.1 (shame).

- Am I on the latest EFI/Boot Rom? Can I simply install the latest and it will

- Can this machine with the latest boot rom/snow lepoard run to 8Gb ram?
