A friend bought one a bit ago, but it was 10.6.3.
Yesterday I tried to reinstall Snow Leopard on my Mac mini 2009. When I inserted SL DVD (get one with mini) mini doesn't seemed to recognized it. It just loads and spin it few minutes and eject it after 2-3 min. Also no DVD option in "Startup disk" menu.
I was 99% that my SL DVD was corrupted (too scratched) and buy new Retail version in Apple store. When I came home and try to load Retail DVD I have the same issues.
I tried my friend's SL DVD and his copy loads with no problem at all. I just cannot install SL because DVD wasn't retail.
We have 3 iMacs, a Mac Mini and an AppleTV in our household. All are 2007 or newer. The hard drives have failed in each of the iMacs (Seagate Drives) and I suspect it is heat related. I have also had a hard drive failure this year with a Fantom MDU1000 1TB enclosure that uses 2 WD Caviar Green 500GB drives in a raid0 config (One of the WD drive's spindle motor buzzes and does not spin).
I am leery of Seagate and WD Caviar Green and have been researching the Samsung SpinPoint 5400 RPM "EcoGreen F2" series. I don't care about the slower access speed, but I do care about the fact that 5200 RPM drives run cool.
I've seen the OWC info on being able to put 8 GB of memory in the mini but I've yet to see why this might be useful. Here are a couple of questions the answers to which I think will help me better understand what's what:
1) Has anyone figured out how to get a current generation mini to boot into a 64 bit kernel?
2) If the kernel is locked to 32 bits, does the mini have any capability of taking advantage of more than 4 GB memory? If yes, under what circumstance would that be?
I would like to set-up a mac mini as the download point for IOS devices (instead of have 30 devices access the Internet for the same download, just have the Mac mini access the Internet for the download(s) and the devices would, in turn, download the updates from the local Mac.

I received a wireless Mighty Mouse for Christmas, and just today I decided to try customizing the buttons. I open up Mouse Preferences, and when I try to change the function of any button, it doesn't work. I can click the drop down menu to change button 3 or button 4 to Spaces, or one of the expose functions, but when I use the buttons, they still do (what I assume are) the default functions -- button 4 allows me to go back in my browser, and button 3 (the ball) allows me to move the mouse to scroll the page. The only button I can change the function of is the default secondary button -- I can make this button do anything I want, but not the others, including the primary button.

I'm thinking of selling my 2010 MacBook Pro, which I bought with OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. When selling previous Macs, I've deleted everything, including other user accounts and then re-installed the OS from the supplied CDs or DVD. This then leaves a new and pristine condition for the new owner to set-up as required. However, I'm currently using Lion, which is not available on a disk. So my question is, how do I get back to a new version of Lion ready for my Mac's new owner to set-up as their own?I've read on these forums about booting and holding down the Alt key in order to boot from the Restore partition, which hopefully has a bootable copy of Lion. Other threads suggest that I should Show Package Contents of the downloaded Lion file and burn the DMG to a DVD using Disc Utility. I guess that this will produce a software update disc and that the new owner will still need to boot initially with the Snow Leopard disc and follow the software updates until a point is reached whereby the new Lion disc will work.I want to sell this as having OS X 10.7.3 Lion - I've paid for the upgrade and wish to pass this to the new owner.

My problem is that I can't find a dvi-d cable shorter than 6'. View 17 Replies View RelatedI have the latest MacBook Pro. I lost the CD that came with it. I'm attempting to reinstall Snow Leopard using a retail disc purchased from Apple. I've tried booting it by holding "C" and by holding "OPTION" and selecting the disc. I've also tried reseting the PRAM. It goes the the Apple screen and I can hear the disk spinning. Then it just hangs there.
Could this have anything to do with the fact that the computer came with 10.6.3 and I'm attempting to install 10.6 from the retail disc?

When I launched Pages I was greeted with the Buy or Try screen. I bought myself a serial number. I have noticed now, that when I go into any iWork app if I click Pages/Keynote/Numbers in the menubar next to the Apple logo, I get the menu for About, Preferences, Register iWork, Quit, etc. I know that the retial box copies no longer require a serial number. My question is this: does the retail iWork disc still show "Try iWork..." as a greyed out menu option under the Pages/Keynote/Numbers menu? For the trial (that was bought with a legit serial, it does) So I was wondering if the retial box version does also? Like this:
