Mac Mini :: Backups End Up In The Trash?

View 2 RepliesIm using a MacBook with OS X 10.6.2 and a Maxtor 1Tb External hdd.
I was running out of space on my External hdd, so decided to turn off time machine and delete all the backups and then do one latest backup and turn it off again, so i turned off time machine and deleted all the backups from the external hdd into the Trash.
I went to deleted the trash and after it prepared to delete some 48,000 files it came up with an error message saying:
"The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003)."
So i researched this, tried a secure empty trash also held down the Option key and emptied the trash and also tried various different Terminal codes (I am nowhere at all competent with Terminal so i was probably doing it wrong).
I've also gone back into time machine and deleted any other backups from with time machine.
None of these have worked, and i have movies, music etc also on the external hdd so a re-format is out of the question.
I have done a search but my problem differs in the large number of files I have. Basically I dragged 6 months of time machine backups into the trash rather than doing the delete through the time machine itself. Now I get error messages (error code:-083, I think) and cannot empty the trash. What is more, I have over 2 million files in the trash from the backups. Either I individually delete files in the trash (without having to empty the whole thing). I also can't just erase and reformat my external hd as I do not have a drive of sufficient capacity to copy everything over and don't want to buy a new one.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a 500GB external harddrive that uses TM and have recently wanted to free up some space, so stupidly I manually moved a ton of the backups (I can't even imagine how many gigs) to the trash. The trash bin now can't even fathom the amount of space and literally doesn't empty itself (it goes to like 140,000 items to delete and just keeps going). So I read that you're not supposed to delete TM backups this way but now I'm kind of screwed because I can't move the files from the trash to the External again cause it takes too much time. What the hell am I supposed to do?

I switched from a Mac Mini to a Retina Display Macbook Pro. When I hooked up the external drive I've been using for Time Machine to the MBP, I went through the setup for Time Machine and it created a backup of the MBP. That is the only backup now showing when I enter Time Machine. How do I access the previous backups from the Mac Mini through Time Machine? If I open the external hard drive from the finder, I can see the backups on the drive.

Have a Mini with OSX Lion ( latest Upgrades) cannot get the trash to empty. I thought it might be a conflict with Time Machine but that doesn't seem to be the case.I have like 15K items in there and have tried to delete them in groups to no avail.

My Time Machine has been making the usual regular backups for a few months onto my Time Capsule. I just found that all the backups prior to about a week ago have vanished. It's not a disaster (I think) as I assume that the current backups reflect what's on my iMac (I haven't had to delete files from it yet).
Where did they go? Why did they go?
A possible connection: My TC is 500GB; my iMac 1TB. I recently put extra files for temporary use onto the iMac hard drive - Time Machine said (in effect) 'that's too much, try removing certain folders from the backup'. I excluded said folder and things seemed okay, but it would be at around the time I did that that my old backups have gone.
I have a Mac Mini Core Solo that I upgrade to a Core Duo and now I'm having a interesting issue wtih 10.6.2. When I try to empty trash it just seems to get stuck on preparing to empty trash and same thing when I try coping files out of a .dmg that has been mounted. If I do it via terminal it works fine, but doing it via the UI always locks up my finder. Thinking about doing a fresh install, since I did the upgrade from 10.5, thinking about just doing a fresh install of 10.6.2?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI cannot empty trash on the boot disk. I get error code -8003. The items I threw in there were the Timemachine backup files. I tried: " sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/* ", but to no avail. I'm running osx server 10.6.8. I ran repair permissions from disk utility. I also ran disk warrior 4.4 (latest update).Â
View 2 Replies View RelatedJust wondering if anyone has had a similar problem with the Time Machine. I bought a 500gb Time Capsule last July and it has been running perfectly until a few days agp. I noticed that all my backups were no where to be seen (when entering Time Machine on my MBP) and that it was doing a full backup.. The backup took the guts of 36 hours.
I've come home today to find that all backups are gone again and it is doing another full backup!!!Any ideas what is wrong here?
The first thing I did was go to the Disk Utility myself and verify/repair all my permissions - it repaired everything it wanted to but it failed to stop the trash problem. My theory is that, previous to this incident when I was using an App from the App Store called DaisyDisk I cleaned out 10GB worth of data that I considered unnecessary. It seems I was a little off with that thought, because I think I deleted my trash directory itself. Â Â
So online here I found an answered question to someone who committed the same careless deletion act that I did. The only problem is, I couldn't completely follow their instructions because however I may have screwed up, I did it worse than they did.I would appreciate any help anyone could have to offer. I have done everything I could think of and one or two things that other people have thought of.

This should be a relatively easy task, but the problem is when I try to empty the trash it tells me that a certain device is still running so it is unable to complete the operation. I can not seem to find said device on the computer anywhere and am not sure how to find it and stop it from running so I can complete the action.

Been thinking on my backup solutions. Currently I use Time capsule and works great. Then I thought I want a backup of it so got an external USB and use the archive feature. Then I thought scrap that and get a dual drive NAS with a raid mirror. To be honest, I a thinking one backup is enough. Really what are the odds of the main machine and a backup to get screwed up.

How do you delete individual items from Trash without emptying entire Trash? If I highlight one item in Trash, the only option is the Empty button. I'm afraid it will empty the whole thing. I don't want to do that.

My 24" iMac (2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, running OSX 10.6.1) crashed during a normal shutdown sequence and had to be closed down by holding in the power button. This resulted in three zero kB alias files with random names such as "." in the trash.
I cannot empty these files from the trash by any normal means and the trash icon permanently shows full. The files can be selected but cannot be dragged to the desktop or renamed. Other files put in the trash can be deleted normally.
My 09 Mac Pro trash won't make the normal trash sound when emptying the trash in SL. Does anyone know if this is for all SL users or how I can turn it back on? I like hearing the sound and don't like the fact that I have a glitch if this is one.

I have my dock hidden and it can be a pain to try and make it appear to delete something. i searched spotlight for trash and there are no hits. i try to drag the trashcan from the dock and nothing happens. There has to be a solution???
