Jul 19, 2009I am planning on purchasing a mac mini solely for the purpose of playing music - it will be hooked up to a hi-fi amplifier and speakers. All of the music that will be on the computer will be in lossless format, which is very large. I will need a lot (320+ GB?) of storage.
I'm wondering if I can cut costs by buying an old 80 GB mini and augmenting its hard drive with a time capsule. I was planning on buying a time capsule anyway, so I could save something like $300. My questions are: would I be able to stream music from the time capsule to the mac mini? Would I be able to import music from itunes directly onto the time capsule? If I hook the mini up to the time capsule via USB, can it serve as a hard-drive, even if my internet is down? Is it going to be much more worth my time to buck up and buy a new 320 GB mini?

Aug 2, 2009I am a new convert to mac and want to set up a mac media server - does anyone know if I can stream movies stored on a time capsule through the mac mini to an xbox. I know how and can stream from my mac to xbox - so that part is not problem - however the new capsule has 2 tb and would be perfect for storing movies, etc -
But the question is can you stream from it - if not directly at least through a connection from the capsule to the mini?

Jul 4, 2010I need some advice on whether a hardware update will actually improve my video performance or not. Currently I am using a mac mini snow leopard server 2009 model hooked via mini display port to hdmi adapter to my lg 37 LED LCD TV. The mac mini has a intel x25 m 80 gb bootdrive.
2 external fw 800 drives used as video storage. Mostly I use boxee eyetv sat all controlled via appleremote - sofacontrol.
Altogether a great setup. With big mkv files in full hd the picture sometimes is choppy. Would a upgrade to the new 2010 mac mini server with direct hdmi port and 320M graphics actually improve the video quality - graphics performance? or should I stick to my current setup? (I bought the current server cheap from the uk)

Apr 15, 2010I want to run a hdmi signal over a long distance and was going to use a cat5 cable but can't find a mini displayport to cat5 converter or a hdmi to cat5 converter. I'm not sure this is even possible, but don't know why it wouldn't be because you can stream HD content over the internet using cat5. And a long cat5 cable is a lot cheaper than hdmi cables and extenders.

Jan 31, 2012I have an "early 2009" mini. I hooked it up to my HD TV through a Sony amp that acts as an HDMI switch. It works great until I switch to a different component (e.g. satellite receiver). When I switch back to the mini there is no video or audio. Screen sharing is also disabled: I can't access the mini from another Mac. Oddly, I can use the iphone Remote app to operate iTunes and send output through AirPlay. I could also access its shared files through the network. I've tried hdmireviver. It works for a while, but when the mini is not selected by the HDMI switch for more than 15 minutes or so, it fails. Do later models of the mini work more congenially with an HDMI switch?

MacBook Pro :: HDMI Video And AV Audio But Not At Same Time
Dec 20, 2010I have an early 2009 unibody 17-inch MBP and a new 2010 LG 50" LED HDTV (model PJ350). I got a mini displayport adaptor that allows me to connect the MBP to the TV using an HDMI cable. The video display is great but there is no sound, and I am aware only the new 2010 allow sound to go through to the TV and not my 2009 MBP. So I connected an AV cable through my MBP headphone port to the AV connection on the TV, but I get sound only on the AV menu. So if I select the HDMI mode I can only see video with no sound, or if I go to the AV mode I only get sound and no video. Is there any way I can see the video through HDMI while getting sound that is coming through the AV at the same time?

I have a late 2009 Mini but the miniDVI port is being used so the miniDisplayPort is available. Can anyone post a link to a adapter that will work and is under $20.

Jun 4, 2009I have had my Powerbook G4 running 10.4 for three years and have had few problems but now all of a sudden I cannot stream video. The playback is very choppy and a lot of frames are getting dropped.
Youtube will work sometimes but Vimeo, Hulu, [URL] are all too choppy to watch. I know these video streams all work on my friends old PC and that I have streamed all of them on my computer before so I dont understand what the problem is.
Also, I have been noticing that occasionally (not frequently) my computer will freeze up for a minute and the colored wheel will spin. This is unusual but I thought nothing of it until I noticed this video problem.

But I heard DVI will be better, so I was looking to get another adapter. Should get a Mini-DVI to DVI or Mini-DVI to HDMI? Would that produce the same picture cause they are both digital? I don't plan on connecting to any other diplays or tv's but would one be more versatile than the other? Oh, and I saw that Apple doesn't make a HDMI adapter, is there a reason why not?
