Mac Mini :: No Audio When Connecting To Sony TV With VGA And Red/White Audio Cable
Apr 28, 2012
I have attached my Mac mini to my Sony TV (to use as a moniter) - there hasn't been any trouble with the picture but I cannot get any sound.
I am using a VGA (I know that doesn't send audio over) plugged into the 'PC In' port at the back of my tv, and I am using an audio cable with a normal headphone-type jack on one end (going into the headphone port on the back of my mac mini) and the red/white cable going into the HDMI-in red/white ports on the back of my tv. I can't figure out what is going on - I tried plugging the red/white cables into all the input ports on the back of my tv, just in case, but no luck.

I recently obtained a Mac mini to use with my Sony LCD projection television (model number KDF-E55A20). To connect the two, I used a standard DVI to HDMI conversion cable. The picture looks great. I have connected the standard audio output of the mini to the audio portion of the HDMI port (#6) on the television using a cable that changes from the audio-out to RCA (red and white) cables. (I'm sorry I don't know what the name of this sort of cable is, but I know it is very standard).
The problem: I get no sound! To troubleshoot I connected my Powerbook G4 to the same HDMI port (using the provided adapter to connect to the same DVI to HDMI cable). Once I plug in the same audio cable as I tried to use with my mini, I get both picture and sound. It seems that the television inactivates the audio input component of the HDMI port if it picks up what it thinks is an HDMI input (since it is supposed to carry audio). But it is only getting DVI! So the problem is not with the mini as it produces audio normally. There's a setting (hopefully not hard-wired) with the Sony to inactivate the audio-in on HDMI input.

I have just read a ton of forum posts and want to make sure I am going to buy the right accessories to make my new Mac Mini all it needs to be to run my home theater.1. For 5.1 audio, do I need to buy this product and then just use a standard Optical audio cable to plug into my receiver?2. The new Mac Mini comes with a mini DVI to DVI connector correct? So all I will have to buy is a DVI to HDMI cable?3. Is OWC (other world computing) the best place to buy upgrades for the mac mini? I have looked at the videos on youtube and it seems like something I should be able to do no problem.

With a sharp fingernail I seem to have damages the internal ribbon cable that connects the audio card in my 2009 Mac Mini, and am looking to source a replacement, preferably in the EU. I'm currently in the UK.The part number is 922-8809.
A Google search reveals a few parts suppliers in Europeland, but they are all charging silly prices for the cable, and US suppliers impose ridiculously high postage charges.

I have a Monoprice USB/Mini-USB to HDMI port in Samsung LCD TV. When watching a movie being shown from my Macbook to the TV screen we can't get audio to transfer to the TV. We've tried different setting on the TV remote but nothing seems to work.

I want to hook my Macbook Pro up to a Sony Bravia (not sure of the exact model). I went to the Apple Store, and was given these two items to hook it up. Moshi Mini DP to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support. Belkin High Speed HDMI Cable - 6 feet
We successfully hooked it up last night, and the video worked. I was told in the store that this setup would not transfer audio, so I already knew there would not be sound coming from the TV, rather from the Macbook instead. My Q is: What's the easiest way to get audio to come from the TV? I'd rather not buy external speakers to plug in, if I can help it.

With the new Mac Mini models, you can have audio out via HDMI or the line out. I am thinking to hook the mini up to an LCD TV/monitor via HDMI (sound on the monitor) and also to my other TV/sound system via the mini DP and audio out.
I assume when the mini turns on it'll activate both displays (if they are turned on), and from what I understand you can have two displays running. I'd only want one at a time so I'd have the other display switched off. But can the mini output audio to either both, or whichever system I am using? I've read a lot of posts but can't find a definite answer. I only want audio (and video for that matter, but can turn off other screen) to one TV at a time, but do I have to go into the OS audio settings each time I want to swap between the two?
I'm also thinking of using Plex and keeping it open at all times, just sleeping the mini when not in use. Can the mini only output to one source, requiring manual switching to the other (i.e. going from HDMI to audio out)?

Well i'm progressing with my connecting the Mac to the TV... Have the video going fine with the Mini DVI to HDMI but for the life of me I can't get the audio output going. I have the 3.5mm RCA jack cable in the output from the Mac and the computer has recognized that it's plugged in and comes up at headphones. Now the problem is getting the TV recognize the audio input.
I've read elsewhere that there should be a way to set the TV to allow a video HDMI input along with an analouge audio signal.

I'm connecting my mbp to my new lcd sony bravia via dvi to hdmi lead and then connecting the sound via headphone jack to tv's 2 x phono, however i'm getting lots of audio noise bleeding through tv speakers underneath the main audio feed, i'm certain that its not a dodgy lead as iv'e tried 3 of them, however if i unplug the dvi lead the noise goes away, is it possible that the hdmi input is conflicting with the phono connection somehow.

My iMac 24" (3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4 GB memory, one of the newest generations) has an audio out jack that double as an analog/digital out? I have a high end sound system with receiver, sub, speakers, surround, etc. that I want to deliver the highest quality sound I can from my iMac. I use optical cables with my other peripherals yet I was unaware that there was a converter that could take an optical signal to an analog "headphone" jack? This doesn't reduce the quality at all? Could someone tell me the exact name of such a converter and if I'm correct in assuming it allows a standard optical fiber audio cable to fit in the "headphone" jack on my iMac. Would like to run out and grab one. And again, is this the best option for highest quality audio from my iMac?

Do you guys think that Apple would release a firmware update for the Mini Display port so that it can send both Audio and Video through a single cable on a late 2009 13" MBP?
They have done it on the New MBP but yeah it sucks to connect/carry 2 cables all the time on my MBP I bought in Oct 2009

- On the current white Macbook, how can you choose whether the "user selectable" audio jack works as an audio-in or an audio out?
- If you get the right adaptor, could you use the audio-in and audio-out simultaneously?
- I presume the audio-out is stereo, not mono. But is the audio-in stereo or mono?

I have the white iMac, not the brand new model, and I always thought that the audio out would accomodate a mini-plug OR an optical cable. Right now I was trying to switch from a mini-plug-to-RCA to optical (TOSlink), but I see no way to fit the optical cable into the mini-plug (headphone) audio out on the iMac. Do I need some kind of adapter? Do I need to remove something in the audio out jack?

I am trying to connect my macbook to my Samsung LCD TV. The TV is Samsungs 3 series, and has 2 HDMI, audio, optical, RCA and PC input. I hooked up the video via the display port-HDMI and used the HDMI 1 port on my TV. It looks great. I tried my 3.5 audio cable to plug into the audio input on the TV. No luck. The audio input seems to correspond to that PC input so I'm guessing that I have to use the PC input in order to get the audio to work as well. Is this accurate? If so does anyone recommend an audio connection type that would work? Maybe I'll just run to Best Buy to get a 3.5 audio cable to RCA.

I have a Macbook Pro unibody and want to get it to my Z-5500 audio system. The Z-5500 has ports for regular mini-plug (6-channel), toslink, and coaxial.
My toslink is already occupied. The mini-plug (6-channel) is occupied by windows PC. So that leaves coaxial.
How would I go about connecting the Mac's audio port (which actually support toslink connections using a mini-plug to toslink adapter) to the Z-5500 coax port?

I had my MBP and TV connected via two cords from Monoprice (Mini DisplayPort Male to HDMI Male 32AWG Cable "5995" which handles video and 3.5mm Stereo Plug/2 RCA Plug Cable "665" which does audio). I'm connecting to a mid 2009 model MBP. I'm aware of the Mini Displayport Male and USB Male Audio to HDMI Female Converting Adapter "5969" however that still required me to purchase a separate HDMI cable to connect to that cord itself plus was four times the total price vs. using 5995 + 665 (plus the Monoprice rep said my method would work just as well).

This whole thing started with my friend offering to buy my imac... i currently have an iMac (witch has all my music, videos, photos and a few programs i would intend on keeping) and a recently purchased macbook uni... The goal is to keep all my music and photos etc. but i don't want to have any of them on my MB (except the programs).
I started (and almost bought) with a time capsule. I liked the wireless transfer and thought it would be cool to have my music accessed from my MB, that i would have connected to my receiver. This is where reading other threads and reviews got my wheels turning and in turn looking down the avenue of a mac mini instead or possibly a apple tv with a external hd...
The ultimate goal is to have my audio and video easily connected to my home theater. I'm not completely against hooking my MB to my receiver I just dont want to have it stored on my MB... What had started as search for a means of storage evolved into a search for an Apple (or at least apple friendly) media server. So who has the best solution?

I have a 2G iMac and I have it connected to a Philips HD TV with a mini-dvi to dvi adapter that is connected to a HDMI-to-DVI video cable. I also have a Y audio cable connected iMac to the AV1 on the TV. The problem is I can only select one source on my TV, either AV1 or HDMI 1. If I select AV1 I can hear the audio from the video streaming on my computer (no video shows on the TV), but if I select HDMI 1 I can only see my desktop background no audio or video. How can I get both the video and audio to play at the same time? Why am I only seeing my background and not video?
