May 17, 2010

Noticed today the display on my MBP won't sleep; this is what I've done/tried thus far:- Gone though my programs and none of them seem to be the culprit. - Quitting every app and leaving the computer idle with nothing running, display still doesn't sleep. - Double checked system preferences and made sure nothings conflicting. - Also of note, the screen saver will trigger and work fine.- Permissions repair did nothin

MacBook Air :: Airport Connection/Sleep Versus Sleep Display?

Apr 9, 2008

I leave my Air on pretty much all the time, and put it to sleep while moving around etc. Sleeping it disconnect the Airport connection - which if very annoying. At a desk I've just been dimming the display all the way off in order to keep my connection.

However, I recently noticed that by setting a "sleep display" hot corner, my network connection is maintained.

I have 2 questions:
1) Is sleep display equivalent (functionally) to simply dimming the display all the way down?
2) Is there a way to either set up a shortcut to sleep the display (other than a hot corner) and/or set it so that only the DISPLAY sleeps after 'x' minutes?

MacBook Pro :: After Display Sleep Or Computer Sleep On / Login Not On Boot Up

Dec 11, 2014

I have a macbook pro 13" early 2011 and I'm se as shown in the pictures (since i upgraded to os x yosemite) . It happens after display sleep or computer sleep on login not on boot up .I've noticed that i run out of ram when the problem appears (only 15MB RAM available out of 4GB), though i doesn't happen every time . I've talked to service and told me its either motherboard replacement or because the ram isn't enough (gpu shares with main ram) so maybe i should try upgrading ram. URL....

OS X :: Programs Crashing Upon Wake From Sleep

Nov 20, 2009

I have a late 2008 uMB running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and every time I wake my computer up from sleep, 3 or 4 of my open applications will crash. This has been happening since a few weeks after I installed Snow Leopard. This always happens with firefox, netnewswire, tweetie, and sometimes iTunes. There are also a few other programs that do this intermittently. This becomes very annoying because 4 crash report windows will pop up, and I will lose all my open tabs and anything I was doing with those programs.

Mac :: MacBook Pro New 2010 Display Stuck In Sleep - High Resolution Anti Glare Display

Apr 26, 2010

My brand new 15 inch MacBook Pro was working fine for a week. Today the display went to sleep and when I tried to wake it, it remained dark, items barely visible. I could see the display brightness meter changing, but the brightness did not. Restarting didn't help. Called Apple and they're going to replace the computer. Has this happened to anybody else? Note: I have the hi-res anti-glare display.

IMac (Intel) :: When In Sleep Mode - Programs Are Forced To Close

Aug 29, 2014

2010 iMac running 10.9.4.  Lately certain programs are forced to close on a regular basis.  This includes Safari, Mail, Crashplan.  It usually happens when the computer is sleeping.  When I wake up the computer first thing in the morning, I usually have 3 - 4 messages saying that certain programs were forced to restart.  This can also sometimes occur when the computer is not sleeping, but when I am using it.  Typically it's Safari that is forced to restart.

Recently upgraded RAM and added Crashplan software for data backup.

MacBook :: Putting Display To Sleep On New With Retina Display?

Jun 16, 2012

I'm used to using the keystrokes control-shift-eject to put the display to sleep without activating the screensaver or putting the whole computer to sleep.

Since the new Macbook Pro with Retina Display lacks an eject key, the best I have been able to do is set a hot corner. I don't like this as much -- especially since it is possible to trigger the hot corner without intending to.

OS X :: MBP Won't Automatically Sleep Display Or Go To Sleep?

May 8, 2010

I have a late 2008 15" MBP, and I often leave it playing videos while I go to sleep. Lately, it's stopped sleeping the display and/or going to sleep (depending on whether something's downloading in the background) after the video is finished, which is quite annoying as the screensaver's glare normally wakes me up in the middle of the night (and it's probably not too good for the display either).

Before a few weeks ago, it would quite happily sleep the display a few minutes after the video (in Front Row or otherwise) finished playing, but it's now consistently ignoring the sleep and display sleep settings (which are all correct). I even set the display sleep timer to 1 minute, waited without anything happening in the background, but nothing happens.

Anyone have any idea how to get the timers to work again?

OS X :: How To Sleep Only The Primary Display

Aug 30, 2010

I use my Macbook + Boxee to watch videos via a projector as my secondary display, but when I'm watching videos the bright macbook screen can be distracting next to my projected display. I'd naturally 'sleep' my display (I even have that function set as one of my 'hot corners') but if I do this then the secondary display, i.e. the projector, also loses picture. I'm therefore left with the options of dimming the brightness of the macbook's screen right down to its lowest setting (which seems to be 'off') or shutting the macbook lid, which naturally causes the whole system to sleep unless I use one of those reportedly dodgy kernel-hacking apps like InsomniaX.

OS X :: Display Sleep Vs Screen Saver

Aug 25, 2010

So I've bee tinkering with my energy preferences in order to get the best battery life I can, I've turned down the brightness to 1, my keyboard back light, to 1 (when I'm watching a movie in a dark room) and I've set it as the 'better battery' option. But now i'm a bit confused. What's the point in the screensaver if you can set your display to sleep (which i'm sure would save more energy). Is it just to look pretty?
How does everyone have their notebooks set-up to get the most out of their battery? Lastly, the 'better battery' option in energy preferences, does this do anything apart from adjust the display/computer sleep? I read that it reduces processor power hence the 'better performance' option.

Mac Mini :: Display Won't Come Back From Sleep?

Aug 20, 2010

About a year ago, I convinced my mom to replace her old Flat Screen iMac G4 for a Mac Mini. We decided to buy a 23" HANNSpree LCD display, connected via Mini DisplayPort to VGA. Since then, my mom has often experienced the same issue: It is often unresponsive to waking from sleep, and sometimes it takes *ages* to come back to life, especially after the computer has fallen asleep for a long time (overnight).Sometimes, though I know the mini is awake, the display says that it cannot detect a signal coming from the mini.

I moved the card back to slot one and it worked!  Rebooted again, no display.  Move card again, everything is fine.

I wanted to use a screen saver which is a cool clock since I do not have any alarm clock or anything in my room, and being that my MBP is always on, why not make it a clock when im not using it? I was wondering if it would be detrimental to my screen if I never let the display sleep and leave the black and white clock screen saver on all the time? Would it really make THAT much of a difference to the life of my screen?

OS X :: Screen Corner - Put Display To Sleep - Is There A Tweak?

Nov 17, 2009

I use my top right corner for flicking of my screen when I need to, really useful for saving energy in class and if I'm listening to music while travelling and sleeping.

The only thing that annoys me about it is, there's no option to set a key to wake the screen. I mean, when using it travelling or in bed, it would be great to use the volume and next/previous keys on my macbook keyboard without waking the screen. Maybe a terminal tweak to make it ignore a few keys, or having a specific key binded to wake the screen that anyone knows about?

The 4870 has never given me any trouble.the Energy Saver settings, I usually set the machine to never sleep, and the displays to sleep after 5 minutes. This used to work great, never had any trouble with it, ever. Now, the displays don't go to sleep after 5 minutes, they just stay on with a screensaver.

I can leave my MBP on all night and the screensaver will run all night. This issue is sometimes fixed by a reboot, but then it comes back shortly thereafter. E.g. when I went to bed last night, the screen would sleep. When I left this morning, the screen did not sleep. I only used the computer for ten minutes in between.

MacBook Pro :: Which Display Adapter Works Best For Sleep

Jul 16, 2010

just picked up my new 15" 2.66 MBP w/AGD.

Which Display adapter will work best?

The MiniDisplayport to VGA or

The MiniDisplayport to DVI.

My External Monitor has both inputs.

It's a 22" Widescreen Acer that I got for free.

It's had problems waking from sleep from my old PC, using a DVI cable, but works fine waking from sleep from my work PC notebook, using a VGA cable.. Not sure if this is the issue or not.

I just want the adapter for my MBP that will most likely have fewer issues.

What do you think?

MacBook Pro :: Charging Display Does Not Wake From Sleep?

Mar 31, 2012

I have a 17" MacBook Pro Early 2011. I have noticed some strange behavior when I am charging the laptop.

For whatever reason, when I close the lid and put the machine to sleep, no matter how long the machine has been asleep when I open the lid again the machine wakes up just fine and the login screen shows, and then the display goes right back to sleep. This is not the entire machine - just the display. To wake the display, I have to unplug the Magsafe adapter. The screen comes back immediately after doing this. Plugging the machine back in does not cause the laptop to go back to sleep. All updates have been performed (Software Update gives me no available updates), and other than this issue there are no other problems with the machine. To my immediate knowledge, I don't know when this started, though I do know that it has been intermittent for some time. I was hoping that the firmware updates that came a few weeks ago would fix the issue, but it seems to recently have gotten worse. I cannot pinpoint anything that would be causing this... and environmentally nothing has changed. The laptop is in near perfect condition from when I bought it, I keep it in a sleeve and a padded backpack when I'm not using it.. and unless I have something open that I am still working on I actually shut my laptop down whenever I'm not using it (living in Texas this is a habit I developed due to old laptops being damaged due to the heat build up in a trunk. I don't actually leave my MBP in the car though especially if it is hot out...)
