Intel Mac :: Won't Recognize Usb 3 Drive

Feb 19, 2012

I just purchased a Seagate "GoFlex Desk" 2 TB External Drive.  It is recognized just fine in my MacBook Pro (Early 2011).  When I plug it into my Intel iMac (2009?), it is not recognized.  Both machines are running Lion.  The box says the disk is "USB 3.0 + USB 2.0".  I tried an iMac USB port that is functioning fine with another USB 2 drive.

Intel Mac :: It Does Not Recognize External Hard Drive

Mar 3, 2012

My external hard drive (Iomega powered 1TB hard drive) that I had as the Time Machine target recently filled up  - I have 500GB on 1TB iMac - yet TM showed 999GB. I removed this hard drive and installed a WD USB powered 1TB and this keeps disconnecting - suspect by iMac. TM on System Preferences will not allow me to select the hard drive - I have to remove and reconnect the USB lead to allow the iMac to see it

Currently running Lion @ 10.7.3 but this problem existed on SL @ 10.6.8 also.   I have tried this drive as a FAT-32 and Mac OS journaled and the 27" still will not recognize the drive.

Intel Mac :: No Longer Recognize Time Machine External Drive?

Jun 26, 2012

2012 iMac running 10.7.4 (lion). I have an external hard drive that I use for Time Machine. It has been working fine. Today, I turned it on to run Time Machine and the computer does not see the hard drive. I used a different cord to connect it. Still did not work. I tested both cords with a different external drive and they worked. So it is not the cords. The hard drive is getting power from its separate power cord. The hard drive knows when it is hooked up because the motor in the hard drive revs up when I plug it into the computer. However, the computer does not see it on the desktop or in finder.

PowerPC :: Won't Recognize Second External Drive

Aug 18, 2008

I've searched the threads but can't find an answer to my problem. I have two problems really but am hoping if I can fix the first, I can work out the second with existing information on the forum. I have a WD 500gb external drive which I use with my Powerbook G4 through firewire. It works fine but now I can't seem to use any other external drive. I tried connecting another WD 320 gb external drive which I am plugging in through USB, but get nothing. I also tried running my other mac (Ibook G4) in target mode to access information on its hard drive but have the same issue - the Powerbook just won't recognize/mount (i.e. I can't see it in finder or desktop or disk utilities).

Applications :: Mac Drive - SL Won't Recognize HFS Partition

Feb 22, 2010

I have a 2 TB external USB drive with two partitions: a small NTFS for Windows 7 and a large HFS for Snow Leopard. I have Windows 7 installed via Boot Camp with Macdrive. Both partitions seem to show up and work perfectly when I boot in Windows 7, but in SL, only the NTFS partition mounts. In disk utility, the HFS partition is greyed out and labeled 'disk1s1' (not what I named it) and says that it's formatted in 'MS-DOS (FAT)' format. When I try to repair the disk it says the following: "Invalid BS_impBoot in boot block: 000000 Volume repair complete. Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required. Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk...disk, and restore your backed-up files."

Considering neither of them are boot partitions, I'm not sure what the deal is. I tried running Testdisk to see if it could repair the partition map and it says "Write access is not available for this media, Testdisk won't be able to modify it". I have hundreds of gigs of data on this partition, so reformatting isn't an option.

Software :: System Cannot Recognize The Second Drive?

Jul 5, 2008

I'm using a firewire external case (no-name) with an IDE hard drive and IDE DVD burner. I'm pretty sure I did this before: hooked up 2 IDE devices to the external case (Master/Slave or Cable Select jumper settings - can't remember) and I'm pretty sure they were both recognized. Or maybe I was insane at the time. I've been trying it with 2 different external cases, IDE cables, etc and I simply can't get the second drive to be recognized. I thought all IDE controllers recognized 2 devices (Master/Slave). These are modern enclosures so maybe the IDE controllers have changed and they have eliminated a feature that was almost never used?

Laptops :: Powerbook Won't Recognize New Hard Drive

Apr 16, 2010

I recently inherited a Pismo, 400 mhz and a 6gb hard drive. Other than the tiny hard drive, the computer is in great shape and has a lot of service left in it. I was able to load Tiger on it, and it's working fine. I replaced the hard drive with a 100gb Seagate, but when I tried to format the disk, the new hard drive didn't show up during installation attempts. However, the volume was visible in the system profiler and the disk utility...I reinstalled the original hard drive, and that booted successfully so I guess that means I didn't damage the hard drive cable, which I had feared. Does anyone have an idea about this? So odd that that I could locate the drive in the disk utility but not at the installation screen.

PowerPC :: Ibook Won't Recognize New Hard Drive

Mar 15, 2007

I have an ibook g4 1.2 ghz 14 inch model with the 60 gig HD runnig Os X. One day, it start freezing up, and when I restart it, it would be fine. However, after a couple of day, it would not longer boot and I would get the folder with finder and question mark. I ran the hardware test on the CD, and it said I had a mass storage error. So, I went and bought a new hd and put it in. (another hitachi one, exactly the same). So i boot it up, run the hard ware test and it is fine. Then I go about installing os x and stuff, and everything is fine. However, on my first restart a couple of hours later, my computer no longer boots up again. I run disk utility, and it does not see any Hard drives, and when i reattempt to install my os x, it can not find a destination folder. What is going on? Also, I have the old HD from my ibook that I put in my external Hd case. If this thing is not actully broken, can I use it to boot through the usb 2.0 drive on my mac? I tried to plug it in, but for some reason no power goes to it, but if i plug it to my desktop, it powers up. (the light on the case)

PowerPC :: IBook G4 Won't Recognize Hard Drive

Sep 28, 2008

My iBook could be on it's last leg. I have an iBook G4 1.2 Ghz with 512 mb of RAM running 10.3.9. It started about 2 to 5 months ago. When I restart my computer, instead of the white screen with the grey Apple logo that appears during a normal start-up, I get the grey screen with a flashing box with a picture of the world inside the flashing box, then the small flashing folder that flashes the OSX logo, then a question mark (?), then it would go into the normal start-up screen (white w/Apple logo). I thought this was the Safe mode boot.

Well, recently, it would just stay on the flashing OSX logo and "?" and nothing would happen. So I would do a forced shut down (holding the power down) and power it back up. Same thing. I'd repeat this for 30 minutes to an hour, restarting anywhere from 15 to 30 times and it would eventually work.

So, the flashing OSX logo and "?" happened again last night, and I could not get it to boot after countless restarts. This morning, I grab my iBook Install disc to do a full restore. I restart and hold the C key to boot from the install disc. I go through the normal steps and when I get to Choose the Drive or Destination tab, my hard drive isn't listed. Nothing is listed. I reboot holding the option key to run the Apple hard ware test. Airport passes, Logic Board passes, then I get an error when the Mass Storage test runs. Reboot and run Test again, same results. I reboot to the install disc again and it still says no drive. I open Disc Utility and the only drive it reads is the iBook Install Disc. I restart normally, and it loads fine, and I instantly come here to seek a diagnostic as to what my problem is.

I don't understand is the strange frequency or my problem. Sometimes it works, sometimes I have to restart it a dozen or so times. How can it not recognize my hard drive [I]some[I] of the time and not all of the time? I don't want to do a full restore just yet. I'd like to know what my problem is before I do anything drastic. I do have my hard drive backed up.

PowerPC :: IBook G4 Not Recognize New Hard Drive

Jul 2, 2009

I had to replace the hard drive on my daughter's iBook G4. I replaced the original Toshiba with a seagate 160gb ATA drive. When using the original install disk, the installer cannot find the hard drive to install the OS on. I was told the problem could only be the cable or a DOA drive; so I got another new hard drive and replaced the replacement, being sure that the cable was connected properly. In the past, I've replaced hard drives several times in various machines I've owned.

I seem to remember that on one occasion I had the same problem, and found the unmounted drive with Tech Tool Deluxe that I had gotten with an old AppleCare purchase. On this iBook G4, however, the Tech Tools disk won't boot the machine. Perhaps I am mis-remembering that incident, but I'm pretty sure that I was able to mount a hard disk in the past using some sort of software. Problem is that this iBookG4 won't boot off of ANY of my older system disks I own.

IMac PPC :: G4 Doesn't Recognize Optical Drive?

May 6, 2012

My little brother bought an old iMac G4 off eBay about six months ago, against the recommendations of my parents and I who told him he should save until he could afford a slightly better machine. He's been improving it here and there when his savings from lawn mowing and birthday has allowed and his latest investment was the 10.5 operating system. When we went to install on the G4, my brother was shattered to find that the machine wouldn't support it. I investigated and found the problem was due to the G4's 800mHz processor. Not a component he could easily switch out. So after a quick flick around, I found another G4 that I considered could actually be a legitimate investment, given the parts we had. The seller claimed that it was perfectly fine, only lacking a working optical drive and hence, also an operating system. Both of which we had.

The second G4 arrived last week and I successfully switched the working optical drive from the old G4 with the "broken" one. Just to make sure I wouldn't lose the screws holding it all together, I installed the "broken" optical drive into the old G4 as well. Then I went to install Leopard. The new G4 has a 1GHz processor and it recognised the Leopard install DVD at boot. It presented the loading screen with the Apple sign and the rotating loading wheel, but wouldn't progress past this. Every time we tried to boot from the install DVD, it would present this screen for around a minute and then the Apple sign would be replaced by a prohibited sign. The booting process never got any further than this. I talked to a few people and ended up installing Leopard via target mode, assuming there was something a little sus with the harddrive which would be resolved once the OS was in place. But wherever the problem lies, it still remains. The G4 now boots successfully from the harddrive and operates fine, but refuses to recognise the optical drive. Here is my chain of reasoning:

- The optical drive in the G4 is not at fault. We know this because it operated fine in my brother's first machine.

- The hard drive is not at fault. We know this because the OS installed and now boots and operates without problem.

- The OS is not at fault. We know this because I performed an almost identical installation (minus target mode) using the same install DVD only days before on a G5.

- My installation work is not at fault. We know this because I performed an identical installation of the "broken" optical drive in the old G4. An interesting side note: the "broken" drive is working fine in the old machine. It is not as broken as the eBay seller thought.

I don't know a whole lot about computers. Most of what I learn is from trial and error problem solving like this. My question is: where does the problem lie?

MacBook Pro :: Won't Recognize Macintosh Hard Drive

Jun 30, 2012

Yesturday suddenly my macbook pro just quit on me. It got really slow, and eventually froze up, so i reset the computer, but to my suprise, it would'nt start up again, it was stuck on a BLANK loading screen, one in 5/6 times rebooting it would go to the apple logo. eventually i put in the OS disk, and again, it would'nt get past the screen even while holding down 'c' eventually after countless tries, it did get past, but now it says, "Select the disk where you want to install Mac OS X" and its not showing anything under that. I went to the disk utility, and it would not show my Macintosh  Hd, so I think there is something wrong with the hard drive, but I've looked online and people have complained about it being a data ribon problem as well.

MacBook Pro :: Won't Recognize New Hard Drive And Partition

Dec 4, 2014

I recently had my Macbook Pro (pre-retina, 2013) checked out by Apple and was told my internal Hard Drive has packed in. I decided to buy and fit a new one myself (£100 from Apple vs £40 myself!!!) so I purchased a 2.5" 500GB SATA Hard Drive and have swapped it with the old one. I am sure I have connected it properly (I've checked 3 times) and I'm sure it is the right HDD (I checked this at the Apple Store in town). I've been told to do an Internet Recovery (Command + R at start-up) and this works fine. When I get to Disk Utility, however, to format the new drive, the drive is not recognized!! It doesn't come up as one of the options, so I cannot select it to make a partition and format the disk.

I am beginning to think it wasn't actually the HDD that was the issue, rather something else like the logic board?
