Intel Mac :: Why Is It Rejecting A Disk
Apr 20, 2012
i am trying to load microsoft office onto my imac. when i insert the microsoft office cd (apple version), the imac spits it out in a few seconds without giving me the option to open the disk on the desktop or hard drive. i can hear the imac trying to read it but it soon rejects it.

My iMac is currently rejecting (spitting out any and all) CDs but accepting and playing DVDs. I have re-set the system management (shut down, unplugged, etc.) and, though I read somewhere to re-set power managment unit, cannot see direct instrucitons on how this should be done on an iMac. Couple of curious points: First, even newly played or burned discs have been emerging a little scratched for as long as I can remember. And, sometimes when playng a DVD, it has to "skip over damaged area."
This is my iMac 27" OS X 10.6.8

Every time I try to restart my computer on my Hard Drive I get this message "Startup disk could not gather enough information on the selected disk". As of right now I am running my whole computer off of a 16GB flash drive that is quickly running out of memory. How do I fix my Hard Drive without losing all 150GB worth of data. I am running off of OS X 10.6.8 and have another iMac that is working fine. Â

I recently came back from a holiday to find that my CD/DVD drive on my intel iMac has stopped working properly. If i put any sort of CD or DVD in the slot in makes a few sounds a just pops it back out about 3 seconds later.
Any ideas on what i could try to get it working again. Maybe reinstalling firmware or something.

I bought a new USB external HDD to install Leopard on and use as my new main Macintosh HD/boot disk. I formatted the ext. HDD in Mac Extended (Journaled) format. I then installed Leopard, made the new disk my Boot Disc, and quit the installer. Now, when my Mac starts and I type in my password (I am the only username), it keeps rejecting my password.

On a MacBook Pro 17" I bought about 4 months ago it appears to be rejecting all recordable CDs. It makes no distinction between Recorded Audio, Software or unwritten CDRs.It makes a "funny" clicking noise when inserting recordables. It has no issue with standard factory audio CDs and official movie DVDs. I didn't really try it before now (welcome to the world of networks) so I wouldn't know if this came like that on delivery or if it's new. Either way it worries me.
My first impression was to just send it back to Apple and request that they either fix it, or replace it. Before I do that though (I'd miss the lovely sucker) I was wondering if there's a history of problems with the MacBook Pro in taht area (I know the iMac Superdrives were junk but this isn't really an iMac ) or if there's a Firmware update I should attempt first.Afaik I've installed everything that came up on Software Update (and that includes Firmware updates, right?).
Regards,
Frederik-Jan

I have been using apple mail for a while now, I have 4 accounts on it (2 gmail accounts, 2 psmail accounts). All of a sudden yesterday both psmail accounts stopped sending and receiving emails, and apple mail started asking for my password. I am able to sign in to both accounts online, AND I am able to send and recieve emails via my ipod touch. So it seems to be a problem just with the mail app.Â

I keep getting the annoying message "The iCloud IMAP server "p01-imap.mail.me.com" rejected the password for user xxxxx" Enter your password again or cancel. This annoying message pops up randomly every few hours on all of my devices running Mail. After talking to Apple support a few times, the problem was escalated to a Specialist who suggested the following:
1) Change the "Check for Mail interval" from Every Minute to a longer interval (e.g. Every 5 minutes).Maybe I don't understand the way that iCloud IMAP works, but I thought only POP mail requires a specified interval for polling for new mail. The beauty of IMAP should be that all events and changes to Mail are reflected instantly to all devices.
2) Change your Mail pasword. I didn't want to do that because it would take a lot of work on the number of OS X and iOS devices that I own.

I have not been able to receive or send any mails from my mac or ipod touch. When I get onto the icloud. site I can see that my mails are coming through so it seems to be a port/server problem with mail settings.Â
Have tried every trick posted online - deleted old account and set it up again, changed port settings to 993 and reconfigured for imap.Â

Mail has been rejecting my wife's password. This started happening when we were still on Snow Leopard and had moved from mobile me to icloud. Someone said we needed to update to Lion to fix it. We upgraded to Lion yesterday but Mail still rejects her password. It says, " The smtp server (smtp.me.com) rejected password for user ________. Enter password again or cancel. She enters the password she uses to access ICloud but Mail still rejects it.Â

After never having done so in the past, my 1.33 12'' ibook has suddenly started rejecting all CDs it's given. Both new and old data CDs are turned away, and yet it accepted a DVD I tried a few days ago. What's causing this?

My Macbook Pro is barely 18 months old and is now refusing to accept any DVDs including the Leopard disc itself! Other discs such as Music CDs & CDr's work fine with no problems at all and to be honest I don't know what to do at all?!
I did not take out the Apple Care Plan as I was a student when I purchased the machine and could not afford the extra on top of what I was already paying! Having just spoke to someone from Apple over the phone they offered me a chat for 35 I think he said in his foreign lingo.

All of a sudden, Mail has begun rejecting my password for my Gmail Account. Yesterday the password was fine and had been fine for about 10 or 11 months, until tonight. This is the box I see when I try to get mail: Mail is rejecting every single password that I use. I'm 100% positive that I'm entering the correct password. Is it possible that Gmail is down or doing maintenance which is causing this problem?

I have my yahoo email account set up in my mac Mail. Recently I keep getting this message saying that Yahoo.ca IMAP server "imap.mail.yahoo.com" rejected the password. My password is all correct and I checked "Remeber this password in my keychain" but it still doesn't work. This message keeps poping out everytime no matter whether Yahoo is trying to receive new emails or not.
I originally thought it was a probelm from Yahoo, and I had emailed them this problem, and they said they had solved this issue from their end even though I kept telling them my password is still not accepted. The strange thing is that I think I could still send and receive emails (although not sure if I am receiving all the emails since the message kept poping out and that my yahoo keeps on going processing mode and then in the end a triangle with exclamation mark just appeared)
Another strange thing is that I have another Yahoo account on my Mail, yet this one never had simialr problem like this before. It is alsways this particular account I have that is having this problem. I tried changing my password, logging in Yahoo from their website making sure the POP setting has checked. Still didn't solve my problem
I have tried going into my keychain to verify and repair my password from Keychain First Aid. But no problem was found.I have also tried deleting my account from Mai Preference and re-added back on, still doesn't work. The first time this problem had happened to this account, I ended up deleting it from Mail and added back on and it seemed to work, however this time nothing seems to be working.

I'm experiencing some problems with my iMac right now, and I'm not sure how they started or what to do to correct them. Â
1) Computer seems to hang up from time to time while starting applications, or in the middle of some tasks. There's no rhyme or reason or any patterns.
Question: Is there anything I should try to clean up the computer?Â
2) About a week ago I started using Time Machine to do scheduled backups rather than me manually starting my own backups. Now whenever time machine does a back up, it seems to stop working somewhere in the "Preparing to Backup" stage, and I end up needing to restart the computer manually because the whole system becomes useless. It will no longer complete any backups, even when I start manually.
Question: Why would time machine now all of the sudden start freezing in the middle of the prep to backup stage?Â
3) I just tried to use my disk utility to check and see if I need to repair the disk and here is what reported back:

I have a " 12Mac iBook G3 (700mhz/128mb/20gb) with combo drive (12.1 16VRAM) Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R2102. System software installed: OS 10.4.1. I'm a longtime Mac user (have a beige G3 desktop at home and a blue and white G4 desktop at work fairly familiar with OS-X), but by no means a true technie. My brother borrowed it for a couple of months, installed some software he needed to do some work with, then shipped it back to me via UPS. Now, the CD/DVD drive rejects all audio, data or video disks -- the drive whirs for anywhere from about 15 seconds to a couple of minutes, then the tray pops back out. Some disks seem to stay in the drive, but no icon ever appears on my desktop and no interactivity begins with the disk. I've tried inserting disks 30 or 40 times and maybe 3 or 4 have mounted to the point the disk icons appeared onscreen. Of those, a couple were audio and did not start to play music (although in one case, I got iTunes open and the tracks seemed to be registering).
In another case, I got a software CD to mount and tried copying its contents to my desktop , but an hour and a half after it started trying to copy the files, an error message appeared -- sorry, didn't manage to write it down). I have tried booting it up with an old OS 9 installer CD and that seemed to work (although the splash page was the gray apple with spinning gear beneath it -- not what I expected to see from a system 9 cd startup?). A friend told me to try that and if it worked, it might indicate this is a software-related problem rather than hardware, but I don't know. Prior to rejecting disks, the drive seems to whir at a fairly normal volume -- nothing violent or unusual. Sometimes it sounds as if it is working hard and sometimes it is fairly smooth sounding, but as I said, I haven't been able to really DO anything with a disk of any kind since receiving it back from my brother. He says it worked great for him -- before and after he installed some new software -- and that he was using audio, visual and data disks on a regular basis while in his hands.
The computer and all programs seem to work just fine -- except for the combo drive. The only other thing I can add is that he managed to lose two of the remaining rubber feet off the bottom, so now only the battery corner has a rubber foot. Does that slight imbalance make any difference to the reading ability of the drive, by any chance? Any suggestions you can give me to check the cause or cure this problem would be greatly appreciated. My brother is in the dog house with me, yet I do believe him when he says it worked great for him. Also, the shipping container looked fine and he did a good job of bubble-wrapping it. IF it had been dropped by Mr. UPS, could this have caused a problem even if the box looked good? (Shipping was insured, by the way.)
