View 4 RepliesI just got a new flash drive and it worked fine on my iMac yesterday, and now suddenly it no longer appears on the Desktop or anywhere else on the computer that I can find. But when I pulled it out of the USB drive, it said the device was not removed properly, so it must have recognized something was connected.
View 15 Replies View RelatedI have a 1GB flash drive..of which i've placed some iTunes formatted home movies in to hand to my dad who has a Windows XP laptop.
When this flash drive is connected to his laptop and I discover the flash drive on XP, and try to open it...nothing happens. Nothing opens. At best it says that in order to view the files in the flash drive that Windows XP needs to reformat the flash drive, but in the process it states that it will have to erase all content and data to do so..
So now i'm wondering how can I transfer these movie files from my MBP to his Windows XP laptop.?
I've only tried this on flash drives and really hope it wouldn't be the same situation if I used my external hard drive instead; as in connecting my external HD which had a ton more home movies, connect it to his laptop and hopefully it showing up... My external HD isn't running Time Machine or anything like that, it's just a clean External HD where I throw in a lot of home movies...
I tried plugging my flash drive in to my Macbook today and it won't show up. I've tred it on multiple computers and nothing. I opened it on another computer a couple days ago and it worked just fine I also opened it on my computer about a week ago and it worked perfectly. But now nothing. Â

My external drive has been used once. It was formatted, partitioned and files were saved on a mac. It showed up on a friends computer running Linux, and it showed up on my PC at home, but it hasn't been turned on since (about two weeks). This is where the problems begin. A few days ago I purchased a new enclosure for my HD (Nexstar 3.5). I took the HD out of it's old enclosure and put it in the new one (I needed the new enclosure for school purposes). I got to school today and plugged it in to the mac, but the drive didn't show up on the desktop. I tried to connect with Firewire 400, 800 and USB 2.0 but no luck with any of them (a USB key worked fine). Just to make sure it was working, I got home plugged it in to my PC and it showed up instantly.
From looking at other threads regarding this issue they all say I have to access the Utility menu. The only problem is since the mac I need to use is a school computer I can't access the Utility menu. It says I don't have authorization to use that menu, and won't allow me to go any further.
I don't know what to do from here. I can't reformat the drive because there is rather important info on there that hasn't been backed up yet. What can I do?
I have tried every type of disc in my drive and it doesn't show up. I hear it spin up but then nothing.

I have a Lacie Porsche 160 gb firewire drive, it worked well, I ve had it a couple of years. Now when I plug it in it won't show the disk image on the desktop. system profiler finds it and I have the Lacie upgrade tool and that checks it and says it is up to date. I have tried it on two other macbooks one older, one newer all Leopards, and one imac desktop. They all found it. so it appears to be a problem with my laptop only.
I did use it with time machine but it ran out of space, Using another laptop I have deleted all lot of stuff off it and tried changing its name.
Put a CD in the disc drive and it did not appear on the desktop consequently i can not get it to eject.

Since I tried to install Leopard and uninstalled it again as it has to many bugs (at least with my configuration) my external LaCie 500 Gb USB drive for back-up doesn't show on the desktop anymore. In disk repair the drive appears and repair shows "no problems". On an other internal disk I still have Leopard installed, and if I boot my G5 under Leopard the disk is visible and works fine.

My Maxtor 500 external hard drive has suddenly stopped appearing on my desktop. My other external drives appear. I've tried hooking the drive to my MacBook Pro with the same results. The drive however, seems 'active'. The light on the front of the drive does its usual flashing routine when plugged into a new machine. I've never had a crashed drive before. Does it sound like this is what has happened, or does anyone have a clue as to what I should do?

The Issue is a duplicate icon of the hard drive appeared on the desktop this AM upon startup.
I don't know what caused it. It just appeared.
It seems to contain everything the start up icon contains when I open it.
I moved it to the trash, but did not erase the trash. I chickened out, so to speak. I removed back to the desktop.
I have the desktop view set to arrange by date modified. It appears approximately half way down the list of icons showing on the desktop. It seems to me that, if it is a duplicate, and by all appearances it is, then it should appear immediately after the real hard drive icon.

I have a bunch of flash drives I need to format for work, and we want to put our company logo as the icon for each drive. We wanted to format them as MS-Dos Fat so that they'll be readable and writeable on both Mac and Windows computers. But when I format them that way and change the icon, it displays as a generic preview JPEG image instead of the real image or even the default hard drive icon.Â
Â
I managed to fix it so the icon will display properly in Snow Leopard, but in Lion the drive still mounts with the generic Preview thumbnail.Â
Is there any way I can easily format a flash drive so that a) it will be readable and writeable on Windows and OSX machines and b) have the icon for the drive appear correctly on Lion, Snow Leopard, and windows machines?Â
My desktop have suddenly decided NOT to show files, folders and disks. I can se those files via Finder but not directly on the desktop. I have repaired permissions, verified the disk and ofcourse checked my Finder preferenses - but no go. The desktop shows what I want it to show if I switch user.

I have a thumb drive that if i plug it into my MacBook Air in the left usb port, it takes at least 3 minutes before it shows up on my desktop, sometimes MUCH longer. If i plug it into the right USB port, it shows up after a minute. If I plug this same thumb drive into a PC, it shows up within seconds. If i plug a different thumb drive into either USB port on the Air, it shows up within seconds.Â
It's a FAT32 thumb drive, and i've already tried reformatting it and the same stuff happens. I've even had disk utility check it out and nothing's wrong. I'd guess the thumb drive is bad but it works instantly if i plug it into a PC, so guessing that's not it. It's a 10.6 MacBook Air.
I have three external harddrives all of which are connected through different ports, all show up in finder, all show up in disk utility, but none of them will show up on my desktop. I looked at a few other posts similar to mine but the answers given to other problems have not worked. There is no way all three of my cords are causing a connection problem and I have repaired and verifyd all the drives and still nothing.

Disks I put in the Superdrive, external hard drives, or anything in the USB or Firewire (thumbdrive, etc) -- nothing shows up on the desktop. All are visible in Disk Utility. USB thumbdrives and external hard drives are visible in the sidebar in Finder, but disks are not (only disk utility).
Because of this I can't burn a disk because the disk is not being recognized. In Disk Utility, the external hard drives appear mounted and can be opened in Finder, but why aren't they appearing on my desktop (they used to)?
When I plug any of my USB flash drives that work with my PC laptop my iMac doesn't see them or mount them. They don't even show up when I look at disk utility. I have a USB printer and an external USB HDD plugged in and they work.

I have an Intel imac with a 2 TB SATA drive used for media  and a 251 GB drive used for applications etc . Trouble is when assessing storage on "About This Mac" it looks like 141GB of the flash drive is full of movies . Can I find a way to see what those movies are in order to safely delete duplicates or move them onto the SATA hard drive. I use apple tv to get media content from itunes but do not really know how itunes or where itunes stores the files . I'm assuming its from the SATA disk as Ihave 1.5 TB of files on there all available in i tunes

I have a flash drive plugged into the correct USB port on my iMac .. but it does not automatically open on my desktop, and I can't find where to locate it! I need to ultimately copy the content from the flash drive onto either a CD or a file that I can then upload to DropBox and share.Â
