Intel Mac :: 110v Or 220v - Which Gives Quality Electricity, Run Cooler Better
Mar 31, 2012
The iMac having a maximum wattage of 350w, would it be better to plug it in a 110v outlet or a 220v outlet. Which outlet has cleaner electricity/less noise and which will make the iMac work better, last longer or operate better. Which will save money? I heard 220v is better for hight powered gadgets and appliances, at 350w, is this iMac a high powered or a low powered machine?

I just brought 2 eMacs from the States to Europe (Spain), thus both machines are not "out of the box" ready to cope with the european 220V.
I've googled searching for answers on and found this post. Apparently, removing a jumper does the trick just fine. My question is which one, because there's two jumpers in that region of the motherboard. See images:
I have taken some images (sorry, with my cellular), I wonder which of the two jumpers has to be removed, the one with two lines (as shown in the picture), or the other one (single cable) in the left-bellow.

Just bought an IMac. Can't find out if it is compatible with European 220volt electricity, or does it need a separate step down transformer?

Started archiving all my old photos and creating dvds. started off using iphoto which is great for compiling a quick slideshow to a couple of music tracks. i then imported these to idvd and created my first dvd project which i was pretty pleased with for a first attempt. The only thing i found annoying was that i could not link all the slideshows together in idvd so that they played one after another, instead you had to come back to the menu and start the next one...so i thought i would import these slideshow movies into imovie and create a complete movie with chapters, titles etc. but when i did this i noticed that the quality of the slideshow in imovie was very noticeably worse.
being new to mac i wasnt sure what was up so i thought about importing the photos directly into imovie and working with them there. but once again the quality was really poor compared to the iphoto and idvd slideshows. after this i though maybe its just a preview problem and all will be well when i burn them to dvd and watch them on tv...so i burnt a dvd with one slideshow created in iphoto and imported into idvd and also put on a movie of the same slide show that id imported into imovie and back.
anyway long story short quality still better in slide show created in iphoto.

In FCPX 10.1.3 I was able to set in Preferences the Playback Quality to High Quality. I just purchased FCPx 10.1.4. It has NO such High Quality Option for Playback Quality. Â
Now all my still clips are blurred badly.  Is there an option to set a High Quality Playback Option. Or can I download 10.1.3, the level where that worked ?Â

I recently purchased the latest iteration of the MBP 2.2 ghz. When plugged into a wall socket (220v here in HK), if I touch the lid I can feel a light electrical current in my hand - similar to the feeling of electric massagers, a light vibrating feeling. I didn't notice this while plugged in in the States (though I bought the comp here in HK). It doesn't hurt, but is this normal, or something I should be concerned about?

How can I burn a high quality dvd? I have a new imac but idvd is not an option anymore. I tried downloading 'burn' but the quality of all the different formats of dvds it produced is terrible. My grandmother needs a dvd--no computer videos for her--so it's super important!

I have the aluminum MacBook (<3) and it is often found on my desk, in front of my aluminum desk lamp. I was writing a paper and had one hand on my touchpad and touched my (off, but plugged in) light with my other hand. My screen dimmed just a little bit, approx the brightness between the two highest lighting levels. Even when not touching my touchpad, just touching my light, my screen did the same thing. Depending on WHERE on the lamp I touch, it affects the brightness... but only on the bell surrounding the light bulb, no other components of the light.

I bought one of these: [URL] and decided to do an experiment, now on standby (Laptop cover closed) it consumes 1.432 per night (8 hours). Laptop on standby, Cover Open but Display in Sleep mode for 8 hours costs 4.731 per day. So that means per month on standby at night, my Macbook costs 44.392. This can't be right? Because if it is, I might have to turn it off at night from now on.

(Electricity as in AC power.) I've been using the brightness controls (F keys) to turn off the screen at night and leave my computer running. I just assumed it uses less AC power that way and I'm saving some electricity but I don't know a lot about electricals to confirm my theory. Does anyone know?

Normal browsing with no flash my CPU draws from 2.5 watts to 6 watts on average, when flash is going my CPU jumps to 40 watts or more. Not a problem I understand that it's going to use more power because flash is a power hog.
Problem is when I close the tab or window that contained the flash I would assume that my CPU would drop back down to the 4 watts it seems to average. That is not always the case, in fact more often than not it would not drop down until I restarted my browser, this was true in Firefox and Safari.

The reviews for this product seem to be good. I was just wondering what macbook pro users specifically think of this product. I am thinking about getting one. Is it worth the money, i.e. will it keep my MBP cooler?

Which cooler do you recommend for the HD 4870? I just got my Mac Pro and while it's not dreadfully noisy, I can hear the gpu fan, it hums a bit. I've seen the Thermalright T-Rad2 VGA Coolers - but are they any good for the Ati cards that ship from Apple?

I'm considering getting a 15" MBP, but am trying to decide if it's worth the little extra to get the 2.66 over the 2.53. I have been comparing the differences and I found out that the 2.53 only has 1 fan, whereas the 2.66 has 2. If both are using the 9400m, would the 2.66 run significantly cooler? If so by how much do you think? Would it be better in the long run for the computer?

When I run my finger anywhere over the aluminium chassis my finger feels like either the laptop is vibrating, or there is a tiny grain of sand under my finger tip.
I know these are both untrue as when my finger is stationary it doesnt do it, and also I can use any finger or even my wrist as i type this.
Then, when I unplug the magsafe, it ceases to do it!
Am I barking up the wrong tree, and also why does it do it only when my finger is moving?
Is this a new issue or has anyone else had their replacement charger causing a funny feeling under the fingers?

How can I change the print quality when printing photos through iphoto on my iMac? I am running OSX 10.7.2 I have installed my printer with the latest downloaded drivers etc. The printer is a HP photosmart 5510. I have gone into system preferences, then print and scan. From here I can see my printer but can't see anyway of changing the print quality. Similarly, if I go into print settings via iPhoto I have the same problem. I have been able to change the quality in Safari but can't see how to create a default setting for photo printing at the highest quality
