when you have TC or AEBS and have a usb hard drive hooked up to it. What is the difference between going to Finder and doing a Connect To Server to map the drive versus having it show an AirDisk?
Somehow I just cannot have my external drive show up as an AirDisk.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have successfully connected a couple of times to a firewire external hard drive connected to my dad's iMac over the internet (AFP server) for the purpose of backing up some files, but now it doesn't show up at all as a volume when I connect to his iMac through finder/go/connect to server. I don't believe that any settings were changed, so don't understand why it isn't showing up. Currently when I get info on the drive 'shared folder' is checked, everyone has permission to read and write and 'ignore ownership on this volume' is checked and file sharing is enabled in system preferences/sharing.

Processor: 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 1GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
I want to back it up before I upgrade to Snow Leopard. What external hard drive do you recommend? The only things that I want to put on it are my pictures from iPhoto and music from iTunes. I have 12GBs of music and 1,109 pictures in iPhoto. Also, how do I go about getting these things onto the external hard drive? Will it mount on the desktop and then I just drag my files into it?
OK, I read about formatting Fat 32 to transfer files. I will try it tomorrow. My other question has to do with using this for backup. it is a 750 hard drive and I was wondering if I should do anything special if I want to use it for both Timeline and video storage separate from timeline.

ive just got my mac book pro and was wanting to transfer all my music from my Windows Laptop, i have a Toshiba Stor.e Canvio 500gb which i have put allof my music onto i plugged it into my macbook via usb and nothing seems to happen the mac doesnt show any sign of the HD what so ever, is there anyway i can get this to work ??

I'm praying someone can give me a miracle cure here but im pretty sure its a terminal case. i have a 24inch iMac 2.66ghz core 2 duo and a western digital 1tb external usb hard drive....this hard drive was bought a month or so ago with the sole purpose of store years and years of media to free up valuable space on my iMac hard drive....tonight without any warning at all the drive icon disappears from my desktop with an error message and now refuses to load, when i click initialise on the error dialogue box it takes me to disk utility.
in disk utility i have tried repairing disk and i get the message "invalid node structure". it then tells me it cannot be repaired and i need to re-format my hard drive.
as i said there is literally YEARS of info on this drive that i really really dont want to lose, is there anything i can do, or anything worth trying. as a side note on the front of the drive it has a capacity gauge and has gone from 3/4's full to not showing anything.
My backup external hard drive hasn't work since I installed Snow Leopard. Bad:( I am still learning about my MAC and would just like to re-format the hard dive and set everything up again. I want to upgrade to Lion but can't untill I backup what I.

I am finding that most new external hard drives have USB 3 connections. Can I use an external hard drive with a USB 3 connection on my older Mac computers? If so do I need an adapter to connect USB 3 to USB 2?

At first it started to copy files, very slowly though, and then would just get stuck despite updating the firmware on the drive.
It works fine on my Mac Book Pro running Mavericks so it must have something to do with Yosemite ....
I have a western digital hard drive that had previously been working flawlessly on Lion, however when using it with Mavericks it had suddenly stopped working meaning it would no longer be found on the desktop or in finder. I have been using the hard drive as a time machine backup. the obvious next step was to launch disk utility and look for a solution. I have found there two hard drive names in disk utility, the first is the HDD name of Western Digital and the second is the "Time Machine" partition. Running first aid on the partition resulted in an error and that the disk could not be repaired. This HDD is important and the data cannot be lost.

After debating the need vs. want of the iMac and Mac Pro, I'm going to follow my brain and go with the iMac (27" i7) since I use it for work, though my work is in the business side of the music industry dealing more with email, spreadsheets and some minor music/photo/video editing (which is easily done for me via Apple`s iLife).
My real question is with the 3 external hard drives I want to buy - G Tech 1TB G Drives. I read about daisy chaining the drives, which sounds like a good idea. But am curious about it. Obviously if I have 3 external HDD's and want to use FW800 on all three of them, with only one FW800 on my computer, daisy chaining solves the problem. But in this set-up, what is the potential downside to this? Is there an upside or other reason(s) people daisy chain their drives, too?
I`ll use the iMac's HDD, of course. But I also need one HDD for work (important files, contracts, etc). One for personal (music, photo, video). And lastly, one as a back-up for the other HDD's.
What would my BEST and also cost effective option be? Buy 3 externals and daisy chain them? Use eSata (what would that entail)? Increased speed would be the only major plus I'm looking for with setting these HDD's up. Just not sure all my options...
But keep in mind I don`t need them to mirror each other. HDD 1 (iMac) has my minor importance stuff. HDD 2 has my work files and business stuff. HDD 3 is personal photos, videos and massive iTunes collection (300gb). And HDD 4 is a back-up of all the others. Raid seems to be not exactly what I need - perhaps overkill on cost, too. What do you think? Also, I know everyone has their taste in externals. I actually had great reliability in Western Digitals MyBook Studios, and My Passbooks. But some people I know had good time with the G Tech`s - aside from them looking cool.
i have just bought and external hard drive and want to put stuff on it. i know i hav to format it somehow using disk utility on my imac. what do i format it to so i can use it on both mac and pc? it is set to read only in "get info" and ms-dos fat in disk utility.

My system is MacPro 2009 with 10.6.8 server and Apple RAID card. Last week, RAID util just notified me of one drive is not viable, so i decided to replace the drive today. The configuration of my system is... There is an Apple Raid Card for HW Raid system Bay 1 = 640 TB drive with Mac OS X 10.6.8 server installed Bay 2, 3, 4 = 1.5 TB drives set up as RAID 5 below is what I did to replace the degraded Bay 4...
1. I shut down the system
2. replaced the corrupted drive with the new hard drive
3. tried start the machine again.Now my machine refuses to start up with the blinking question mark... I guess that the system fails to recognize the new drive or cannot find the system files...
4. So I put back the degraded drive...
5. The machine still won't start...
6. I tried to use the 10.6 server installation disk to boot up the machine to check if I can fix the system via disk util; but, everytime I do this, I got kernel panic...
7. resetting PR Ram didn't help, cannot boot up via safe mode as well (since the system file is not accessible now, I guess...).
8. booting via 10.6.2 server installation DVD still gives me kernel panic...
Why would my system corrupt by just replacing one degrade drive? The Mac OS X is not even the part of the Raid system... How am I supposed to fix this issue with out the installation disk?

Say I search for "mp3" on my airdisk via finder. No results show up even though I know for a fact there are mp3's on the air disk.
I select "shared" and "filename" in the search bar when it comes up to search all shared drives with the filename (which has mp3 in it). Is this because spotlight doesn't index this drive?
I am experimenting with two drives connected to my new AirPort Extreme. The first is for Time Machine, has been working well. The second is the experiment. The second drive is a storage drive that is usually attached to my iMac and is included in the Time Machine backups of the iMac. My question is if I decide to keep the storage drive on the AirPort then what would be the best way to keep it backed up? Could I run Carbon Copy Cloner from my laptop or would that just be a big mess? The goal would be to backup the storage drive to the other drive connected on the AirPort Extreme. I can live with the storage drive on my iMac if it is felt that this is a bad idea... just would be nice to be able to access the drive without having to have the iMac on... maybe I need to buy a less power consuming Mac Mini to be used as a server.

I tried some different settings with really strange results. With the networkutility I checked the connectionspeed:
Restarted the AEBS with the setting "automatic = a/n - b/g/n" -> 300Mbit/s
Disconnected my MBP and reconnected it -> 130Mbit/s
Restarted the AEBS with the setting "N Only 5GHz - b/g " -> 300Mbit/s
Disconnected my MBP and reconnected it -> 54Mbit/s
I have an external drive connected to my AirPort Extreme Base Station; the drive has 3 partitions, and we have multiple Macs in the house. Is there a way to specify which partitions are available to which Mac? For example, I'd like partition #1 to be available only to Mac #1, and so on.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI admin a network of Macs that use a 10.3.9 based OS X Server machine as a backup server. There is an iDisk account the server uses for iDisk backups and once a month I run a manual full back to CD. Tonight, the CD backup failed to run since the boot volume was basically full. Upon further inspection, I learned the boot volume is 6GB on a 20GB drive. So, I'm looking to possibly replace the hard drive. I'm also considering replacing the entire server with more modern hardware but that's another discussion.If I were to replace the 20GB hard drive in the server now with say a 60GB (we're talking PATA/IDE here) what would be the best way of doing it? We're talking about the boot volume now so I would need to move the OS and MBR and everything to the new drive.
View 7 Replies View RelatedSo around last week my airport has been giving me some problems first of all it allows me to connect to my airdisk for about 30 min, then after 30 min when I click it to use I get this error (Connection Failed)(The server �Airport� may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.)
Im really confused it always worked without a problem and now I get this the way to fix it is to restart my airport but then after like 30 min I get the same error.. Its also impossible to do time machine backups as well unless I restart the router a bunch of time.
i'd like to get the ATV but want to know what to expect. I hope that a FW 400 HD would be ok for streaming all content (as music is seamless with just the airport express), but it would even more sweet if i could just get an new AE and set up an external media library to stream over Airdisk.
so, is Airdisk and it's USB interface limitations still enough for the ATV? would be watching high quality DVD rips and lossless music files mostly.
