Hardware :: Won't Configurate Airport Extreme Firewall For Fonera

Feb 25, 2010

I recently got a Fonera+ to get free WiFi all over London in return for serving up some bandwidth in my neighborhood. My modem is in the back of my flat, and I need to keep the Fonera off an Airport Extreme router at the front instead of between my ADSL modem and rear Airport Extreme.

Here are the ports that Fon says must be adjusted in a firewall to allow the Fonera to work.

If you install your La Fonera behind a Firewall that limits outgoing connections then it is necessary to make sure your La Fonera can access the following ports on the internet:

Port Protocol Description
53 UDP/TCP FON DNS
80 TCP Fonera Website / Portal for payments etc.
123 UDP Fonera Clock synchronisation
443 TCP Portal for payments etc.
1645 UDP Radius authentication
1812 UDP Radius authentication
1813 UDP Radius authentication
1937 TCP Fon heartbeat and updates
1938 TCP Fon heartbeat and updates
3990 TCP Coofachilli port normally internal but may be needed depending on firewall/router

My setup is ADSL Modem > Back Airport Extreme > AC Power Ethernet > Front Airport Extreme > Ethernet connected Fonera

Do I have to adjust the firewall in both routers?

Where and how in Airport Utility do I make these changes? It also seems that in any place I have found, it asks what services are needed. What services would this need?

Here is the rest of the information from the page that contained the ports above

To make sure you don't have to configure/install a Radius/Webserver locally, FON is offering free access to it's serverpark providing these services. You only have to allow your La Fonera to reach them through your firewall. You can't limit these services only to an ip-pool of *.FON.COM; hence FON has also backup servers elsewhere and allow eg access to Paypal, youtube, Google, Gmail, Flickr, ...
La Fonera cannot be configured to use a WebProxy. We advise to "whitelist" your La Fonera on Mac/Fixed Ip adress so it can be used without the configuration of a Proxy. If you can not configure your Webproxy you will need to obtain a standalone internet connection without such security. We assume if such security is present then your ICT Policy won't allow a service like La Fonera to exist in your Network at all! If you became a Fonera without obeying your ICT Policy then give the La Fonera to someone who can install it without breaking Company law!

Hardware :: Won't Use Firewall / Blocking Airport And Airtunes

Jul 22, 2010

I have AVG Firewall and I can't seem to figure out how to allow Airtunes and Airport Utility to get through. When I open Airport Utility, I can't find my Extreme or Express stations. When I open iTunes, I don't see an option for Airtunes. If I turn off the firewall, all is well.

Hardware :: Telus Firewall Settings For AirPort Express?

Jul 5, 2009

I want to use AirPort Express to send iTunes to my stereo. I get my internet connection from a wireless modem (Telus is my ISP). I can establish a new network between my MacBook and my AirPort Express which will work (iTunes comes out of my stereo), but then I cannot access my wireless network and get the internet (my Mac will only allow one network connection at a time); and I can connect an ethernet cable from my the WAN port on my wireless modem to my AirPort Express, which will also work. But I cannot get my AirPort Express to join my existing wireless network. Telus tells me this won't work because they won't allow another network to join their network. I'm guessing this would be a Telus Firewall issue, but when I look at the Firewall settings Telus provides,

Hardware :: New AirPort Extreme Vs Old AirPort Extreme

Mar 3, 2009

Simple question: Of the new features in the new AirPort Extreme Base Station, which of these could become available to the old AirPort Extreme Base Station via a software/firmware update? I have to think that at least some of the new features don't actually require new hardware. Just trying to figure out if I want to shell out $179 for a new AEBS when my current AEBS works pretty well as it is.

Hardware :: Airport Extreme Not Forwarding Airdisk To Connected Airport Express Network?

Apr 25, 2010

I have an Airport Extreme, with two USB hard drives connected to it. The Airport Extreme shares these disks to my wireless network via Airport Disks.

Upstairs I have an Airport Express, that wirelessly connects to my Airport Extreme downstairs, and extends the wireless network so I get a good wireless reception upstairs.

My problem is, that it does not seem like me Airport Express does a good job of forwarding my 2 USB Airport Disks to the extended wireless network upstairs.

For example, when I use the AirVideo iPhone app to stream video from my USB Airport Disks I get a server connection error when I go upstairs and the iPad/iPhone switches to the Airport Express networks. I cannot reconnect as long as it is on the Airport Express network. If I turn the airport Express off, and thus switch to the poor wireless reception from the Airport Extreme, I can connect to the USB Airport disks again.

The Airport Express is connected to the Airport Extreme in bridged mode.

Should I uninstall the last version of Airport Utility? Is there anything else anyone would recommend before i install or connect the new hardware/software?

In other words, can I be connected to my Airport EXTREME and Airtunes would still work since the Airport EXTREME and EXPRESS are using the same network wifi-name (the Express is just extending the Extreme's range).

MacBook :: Extending Airport Extreme From Airport Time Capsule

Sep 11, 2014

Just bought a new Airport Time Capsule 3TB for backup purposes and to use as the main router in my home (model number A1470 the latest tall one). I was originally using an AirPort Extreme (model number 1408 approx 6" square and 1' tall) for my main router.

I got the TC setup and putting out good wifi signal, but would like to take my Extreme and extend it off the TC to boost signal in other parts of my house, but having some difficulty.  I searched the forums and found setup instructions to do this, but I get a message saying, "unexpected error.  Try again."  Well, tried again and still no luck.

Hardware :: Setting Up Airport Express Through Airport Extreme?

Mar 9, 2010

I currently have the apple extreme as my wireless router. It works great. I absolutely love it. I have two macbook pro's (wife and I both have one) and use it for my PS3 and Xbox 360. I started a new job and was given a free HP desktop (not my choice, but hey, it's free, so what can I say). The desktop is not wireless and I am not able to put my computer near the airport extreme because my TV already owns that territory. Today I bought the Airport express to use as a bridge (and other things in the future). I have plugged it in. I opened the airport utility using my macbook. It finds my extreme and my express. I select that I want to set up the express. I select that I want to set it up using an existing wireless network. I select my airport extreme. It tells me that it has to restart the express. I wait approximately 3 minutes. It then tells me that the settings to the express have been changed but it's not able to find it.

My main goal is to use the express as a bridge. I have the express plugged in beside the desktop and want to run an ethernet cable from the express to the desktop to allow for wireless capability.

Hardware :: Airport Utilities Can't Find My Airport Extreme

Jul 9, 2010

I have a Macbook (white unibody) running Snow Leopard. I have a personal wireless network using an Airport Extreme and I have an external hard drive (WD) connected to the Airport Extreme. I use this hard drive for my Time Machine Back ups.

I just got back from a trip and tried to back up my time machine. I got the error that the back up disk is not available. I then tried to open the airport utilities.

It tells me that "Airport Utilities is unable to find any Airport Wireless devices". I find this doubly strange because I have no problem connecting to the internet on this wireless network which supposedly does not exist.

Hardware :: 2nd Airport Extreme Not Seen In Airport Utility?

Apr 21, 2009

I bought the new airport extreme to extend the wifi range in my household and hoped to share a hdd. Upon my experience and reading the forums, the sharing hdd is not as easy as I thought. But that is not my issue at the moment.

My issue is with extending the network. A couple weeks of ago, I did the setup to connect the two airport extremes together (older round AE & new box AE) using aiport utility. It seemed to have work because the signal was stronger in a part of the house that usually had 0 to 1 bar.

But shortly after, the signal showed itself as inconsistent. The signal strenght is jumpy from 0 to full bars. And right now, I am sitting in a part of the house that used to have 0 bars and now, I get full bars. And yet my mbp cannot see the newer, closer in distance AE.

Hardware :: Airport Express Vs Airport Extreme

Feb 13, 2010

I am upgrading from a g wireless router to an n. I have a Belkin right now that I hate. Neither I, on a mac, nor my roommate, on a PC, can get a consistent connection on it. Needless to say it's going back and I want to get an express or an extreme. I had actually bought an Airport Extreme first and it was lightening fast, but I was told that the Express was just as fast, so I went to exchange. The guy at BestBuy told me the Belkin was cheaper and just as fast, so I bought it. I would really like this to be my last trip to the store for a router. Do I need to shell out for the Extreme or is the Express just as fast if all you need is an n router?

I was thinking of getting a time capsule for back up, but not sure if I could get it up and running with the Linksys or not.

Can I use my Express as an extender for using my laptop in the backyard? will it talk nicely with the Linksys?

What are your suggestions/opinions? I hate to see my beautiful Apple products sitting in boxes.

OS X :: How Do I Set Up The Airport Extreme With My DSL For Wireless?

Jul 6, 2009

I don't understand something very basic about the internet...

I have been using a 2WIRE wireless box plugged into my phone line/DSL for four years. I knocked it over and it doesn't seem like it is broadcasting a wireless signal anymore, so I bought an Airport Extreme Base Station, 2007 square model used.

I don't understand how to set it up... Can't I just throw away the 2WIRE thing now? When I try to use the Airport Extreme thing, it does not recognize the internet DSL signal or something.

I just want to use the Airport Extreme as a dsl wireless router alone.

I don't want the 2WIRE thing. The 2WIRE thing is usable when I plug my ethernet cord into it, but it is no longer broadcasing a wireless signal.

How do I set up the Airport Extreme with my DSL for wireless?

Sorry this is so stupid. I just don't understand what to do at all.

Hardware :: Airport Extreme Wearing Out?

Sep 10, 2010

Over the past couple weeks I've noticed that my airport extreme's wireless signal has gone down. I bought it new in 2004, and it's always had a full signal everywhere in the house on multiple computers. Now the signal strength seems to be kinda random, somedays I'll have full signal and somedays it will drop to one 'bar'. I should note that it does have the latest firmware installed, and this happens on multiple computers new and old. So my question is if anybody has had this experience with airport extremes, particularly older ones?

Mac Mini :: How Well Would AirPort Extreme Work

Oct 13, 2010

Possibly in the market for a MacMini but was wondering how well it would work if I streamed video files, mostly .avi files from an external HD connected to my Airport Extreme. Does processor speed matter, or is more important to have a good WiFi/internet connection?

I was going to buy a Mini and then upgrade the HD/RAM, but if I can get away with getting a base model and simply stream videos and other files from the drives that I have shared over the network, it would certainly save me a ton of money.

OS X :: New Wireless Box Not Work With AirPort Extreme

Nov 4, 2010

We've just moved house and signed-up to O2 Broadband. They've supplied a Thomson wireless box that plugs into the phone socket. This box, however, doesn't work with my Apple TV or Airport Extreme/Airport Disk. I've tried to make my Extreme 'extend the network' but it says the network cannot be extended.

How can I ditch this O2 wireless box and get back to my Apple-based network (considering the broadband enters my house through a phone socket rather than a Cat-5 ethernet cable that the Extreme can accept)? I want my AppleTV/Airport disk back as I had in my old house!!
