Hardware :: USB HD Won't Mount / Repair

May 20, 2009

As I was copying music from my external HD to my laptop after a system restore, an error message popped up (I don't remember what it said) and the disk unmounted. This happened as files were being transferred, and I got the "disk removed without being ejected; files may be corrupted" message. I turned the drive off and turned it back on, and received this error: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." I tried to run a repair in disk utility and got this: Verify and Repair disk disk1s1 Checking HFS Plus volume. Catalog file entry not found for extent Volume check failed. Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit Disk Utility stopped repairing disk1s1 because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit 1 HFS volume checked 1 volume could not be repaired because of an error I put the drive into a windows machine, which recognized the disk, but won't assign a drive letter to it, so I can't access it. It seems to me that something happened within structure of the disk as I was copying files, and something got corrupted. Simply due to the fact that a windows machine will recognize the disk as well as recognize how much space is being used on it, tells me that the information is still on the drive. I just have to discover a way to retrieve it.

Hardware :: External HDD Refusing To Mount - Volume Needs Repair

Jan 22, 2008

Last night I encountered a problem with my seagate FreeAgent external HD/D. I right-clicked on the desktop icon to eject it as per usual and once the icon had vanished I pulled out the USB cable. However, I then got a message saying that I didn't eject the device properly and might have lost data, etc. When I plugged the external drive in this morning I found that it wouldn't mount. I am in a state of panic at the moment because it is almost 150gb of data that I really did not want to lose! I read in one of the previous threads that this is a common problem amongst macs but I wasn't able to discern if this was a permanent error and if it means my drive is shafted. I ran disk utility and this is what it came up with:

Verifying volume "disk1s1"
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Invalid node structure
Invalid B-tree node size
Invalid node structure
Invalid B-tree node size
The volume needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair

I tried to repair it using disk utility but it wasn't able to do it. I am now using the demo of Data Rescue II to do a thorough scan which will take several hours but I'm wondering what options I have. Are there any other mac tools I can use? I am a total newbie when it comes to macs having only made the transition from PC to Mac several months ago and I don't know what tools I can utilize to fix this problem, if it even can be fixed.

OS X :: Unable To Mount External Drive / Repair Disk Permissions?

May 20, 2009

I'm having a series of problems. First some intermittent audio problems with Garageband, then, then some external drives won't mount, and now I can't sync to my disk from the iMac. I've run Disk Utitilies a few times and when I do Verify Disk Permissions, it finds a list of things to fix, I then hit Repair Disk Permissions and it fixes them, and then hit Verify Disk, and it say the disk appears ok. When I do Verify Disk Permissions again though, it finds another long list of things to fix. Is this serious? What should my next step be? Should I reinstall the entire system?

Power Mac G5 :: Firewire Drive Seen By Disk Utility Won't Mount, Verify Or Repair?

Apr 15, 2009

I have a WD Terabyte drive that I have used for over a year with no problems. A couple of days ago my roommate went to use it and disconnected the drive from my computer without ejecting it first. He used it with his PC and disconnected it without "safely removing" it from his computer and now it will not mount to my desktop of been seen by PC. Disk Utility sees the device but I get an error when I try to repair the disk or verify the disk. It gives me an "error on exit" message. I really need the 700GB of info on that drive. Don't know what to do next.

MacBook Pro :: Sending In For Repair Vs Local Repair?

Oct 9, 2009

My MBP recently had a bunch of problems with the logic board and speakers. I brought it into the Apple Store (on Monday) and they gave me the option of them sending it into a repair center, or them repairing it locally in store. I requested that they sent out just because I was curious to see how long it would take. To my surprise, my MBP arrived, fixed and as good as new on my doorstep today. That's amazingly fast for sending it out to a offsite repair center. The repair center is in Philadelphia. I live in Maine. You do the math. When I've had things repaired locally in the Apple Store it's taken weeks to repair instead of days because they need to order the parts.

Anyways, the point of this thread was to suggest to people that they choose the offsite repair option. It's amazingly fast, and it saved me a trip to the Apple Store (they shipped my MBP directly to my house).

OS X :: Does Apple Repair All Macs Sent In For Repair?

Apr 2, 2010

I took my late 2007 macbook in because the case was cracked. I read that this was a known issue and they would repair for free.(I had no warranty) also my battery was expanding and bloated, so much that it will no longer fit in my comp.

When I took it in, the tech said that my bottom case was cracked and he said that wasn't part of the known issue. He said it was caused by accidental damage (it was cracked clean through, so much so that it could be physically separated from the comp.(I informed him that the comp had never been dropped or damaged in anyway, he apparently didn't believe me but said he would see what he could do.

Anyway, he said he could fix the top case ( but they would not fix the bottom case)and give me a new battery although he had never seen a battery with the problem that mine had. He said it was probably expanded cells. I agreed to that as something is better than nothing but then, I asked him if the battery expanding could have caused the bottom case to crack since it was cracked near the battery compartment but on the side of the comp. After he tinkered around for a bit with the battery and the cracked part, he said he wasn't sure but he would send it in for repairs and I would not be charged.

First he said he would quote me a repair price and I told him that I had no intentions of paying for anything. After several instances of him running to the back to talk to people, he agreed to send it in. On the repair form it is listed as tier 4 accidental damage and I know that the tier 4 comes with a hefty charge for repair. Anyway, I am out of town and my comp is scheduled to be returned to me today. I dropped it off at the apple store on the 30th, it was received by the repair center on the 1st, repaired today( the second) and shipped back to me today and scheduled to be delivered today as well.

I was trying to find out if they actually repaired the bottom case or not as I will not be home to receive my comp until next week sometime. The repair form also said call if additional repairs are needed to quote a price. I have not received any calls at this number and do not know if they left any messages on my home phone. The repair turnaround seems rather quick and I was just wondering if they actually repaired it or sent in back in the same condition.

Apple support has no details of the actual repair just the time it was received, repaired and sent back to me. Also will they just leave it outside because no one is home to receive it?

OS X :: Upgrade To 10.5.4 Will Not Mount

Jul 12, 2008

Currently running 10.5.1, skype crashes all the time as soon as I try to call or IM. Same for YHOO msgr. So I thought I go for an upgrade and downloaded the last update to 10.5.4 (560MB). As soon as I try to install the file the updater gets stuck in the first window (configuring installation). I left it alone because I thought it might needs some more time (Powerbook G4.1.5, 12"). Nope, after 3 hours still no moving along for the bar and I just end up shutting the machine down via the power button. I really would love to use skype and the other msgrs again, get the upgrade to work. Download the patch again? I don't even know where the already downloaded patch sits, if I can't install it I will certainly like to delete the 560MB.

OS X :: USB Pen Drive Won't Mount

Nov 17, 2010

I tried searching for a solution for this and can't find any. I've seen one other threat in here about similar problems but the variables in my case are different. Here's the thing, a friend of mine lent me her usb pen-drive. She uses it on a pc mostly at work. When she gave it to me she forgot to copy some files i needed so she plugged it into her macbook pro (one of the new ones from this year, intel, snow leopard and stuff), copied the files i needed on it and i took it home. I have an intel imac, bought on april 2009. I plugged the usb pen-drive on my keyboard usb port and nothing happened. So i took it out, plugged it in again and nada. I did it a 3rd time and this time it showed me a message saying that this pen-drive needed more power and i had to try plugging it into a different usb port. So i plugged it in the back of my imac and nothing happened, not even the "insufficient power" message. It doesn't mount, won't show up in the desktop nor in the sidebar of a finder window.

I checked the disk utility and the pen-drive shows up there. I see the "main" pen-drive and it's "partition" (i dunno how to call it... mmm... you know, like you're seeing the "parent" drive and its "son" drive but they're "one and the same") and i can see its tech info and i noticed it's formatted NTFS. Since it worked just fine on my friend's macbook pro, i can't figure out why isn't it working in my imac. I know macs can't write NTFS, only read (mine doesn't at least) but hers wrote info in the pen-drive no prob. Another thing i noticed is that the "son" drive is grayed out. I can see its tech info but it's grayed out. Verifying the drive simply shows a message saying "Verify volume failed: Invalid request.".

So, i have no clue as to what's going on. I could give it back and ask my friend to format it as journal or whatever it's called to be mac os compatible and copy the info back again, but i don't know if that'd be a solution until i'm able to try it in a few days. Can't ask her to format it fat32 since the file i need is larger than 4gb, so yeah. Any clues as to what could be the problem? I even tried unplugging any usb peripherals and no dice.

OS X :: Mount ISO As CD In Drive

May 23, 2007

I understand macs can mount .iso with a simple double click, but I want my macbook to treat an iso file as if it were a CD in the cd drive. This is easily done on a C with PowerISO or Alcohol120% I should be able to do it on a mac too, shouldn't I? But I can't seem to figure out how to. When I double click the iso to just mount it, it mounts fine, i can access files and everything, but if I run a program that reads of the CD i of course get the "Please insert CD". Now, I have the CD right here, that's no big problem, but the using drive kills the battery life like nothing else.

OS X :: External HD Won't Mount

Nov 13, 2008

I recently Installed Windowns on my MBP via boot camp and I also installed a MacDrive 5 day trial version so I could move some files from the external (1Tb WD My book pro) to the windows side. Everything went smoothly and then after my file transfers on the windows side, then in a hurry I just unplugged the firewire cable and shut the mac down. Now when I start up in OS X the drive doesn't mount. I starts up ok and then the only thing I see is a task called "fsck_hfs" eating up my CPU and memory. The drive works fine in windows with Macdrive so it's not a HD failure because all of my files are still there and usable, It's jut that Leopard can't see the darn thing. So how could I get Leopard to see the HD again without re-formating and losing all my files on it?

OS X :: Get USB Drives To Mount?

Mar 10, 2009

I have an interesting problem in that my USB drives aren't mounting to the desktop. I've tried two separate flash drives and an external hard drive. When I check Disk Utility, I can highlight the drives and click 'mount' and the 'mount' button will darken for a few moments as though things are working but then the button just returns to its normal state and the drive still does not appear on the desktop. Despite this, Disk Utility's log shows the message 'Mount of "xxxx" succeeded' every time. Disk Utility sees the drives (obviously) and will verify them. Only mounting appears not to work. Meanwhile, I can plug my Wacom tablet into the very same USB port and it (the tablet) works perfectly. My iPods and iPhone will sync just fine from the same port. Why is this happening and, more to the point, what should I try in order to fix it? I know it's not a simple matter of restarting because I've done that a number of times already without success no matter what Disk Utility says.

So, i'll try to be as detailed as possible. I have been using a Seagate FreeAgent Go 500GB portable hard drive (reformatted to HFS+) with my 13" Macbook Pro for a while now. I use my computer to rip my DVDs and put them on the hard drive to play on my Xbox 360. Things were working great until it stopped mounting on my Macbook (or any other computer running OS X). The strange part is that it is still recognized in disk utility, but when i try to "mount" it it says something to the effect of "an error has occurred, try repairing the disk". However, when i attempt to repair the disk it says that it is fine. Also, i have tried to use an external power source so power is not the issue.
