Hardware :: Data Transfer Slow Speed Rate To Time Capsule

Apr 25, 2009

I did some experimenting this evening to assess data transfer rates to various storage items in my home network which uses a new Time Capsule as the router/hub.

Connected to the Time Capsule are the following:
- Mac Pro (GigE)
- Vista Machine (GigE)
- MBA (Wifi)
- Raptor Drive (USB 2)
- Time Capsule Drive (Internal)

Transferring a 650MB file between devices yielded the following results:
MP > Vista (GigE) = 288 Mbps
MP > MBA (5GHz) = 52 Mbps
MP > MBA (2.4GHz) = 43 Mbps
MP > Raptor (TC USB) = 38 Mbps
MP > TC Drive (Internal) = 38 Mbps
MBA (5GHz) > TC Drive (Internal) = 22 Mbps

It seems that transferring files to a USB drive or the internal drive on the Time Capsule is painfully slow. It took 2:20 to transfer the 650MB file to the Time Capsule over GigE vs. 0:20 seconds to another machine. What's worse, is that the data transfer speeds to the TC are a function of link speed, the slower your connection, the slower your transfer rates. It's not simply limited by some bottle-neck in the TC. It took 3:45 to transfer the same file to the TC from the MacBook Air over the 5GHz WiFi connection. When I complained about this the other day at the Apple store, the "Genius" said that it's due to QOS built into the router to ensure it doesn't kill my web browsing.

MacBook Pro :: Data Retrieval From Time Capsule?

Apr 9, 2012

Is it hard to pull your information that was saved on the Time Capsule to a new hard-drive?  My old hard-drive died & I have been afraid of accessing my Time Capsule for the saved information. Would accessing the 'old' information [& retrieving it], erase or corrupt the new information/files on my 'new' hard-drive? I would like to know exact steps to access & retrieve the information to unify all my saved 'stuff' on the new hard-drive & then restart the back-up of my computer to the Time Caspule again.....

Hardware :: How Does Time Capsule Store User Data

Sep 1, 2009

I got the original 1 TB Time Capsule when it first came out, and set it up with user accounts so that everyone in my house would have their own individual space as well as a shared space that everyone could use.

When I turned off accounts mode and switched back to using the Time Capsule password to access a single shared volume, I got a look at how the Time Capsule organized its files (or so I thought).

There were two folders in the root of the drive, Shared and Users. Within Shared was all the shared data on the Time Capsule that everyone could access, and within Users were a set of subfolders, one for each user account I had set up. Within each of those was the data for that user.

However I recently decided to revisit the way my Time Capsule was set up, so I switched back to Time Capsule password mode to affect changes to the layout of the drive. (In the past, I had been able to shuffle files between users this way, and even between the private and public areas of the drive, then simply switch back to accounts mode and my changes would stick.)

But it seems Apple has changed the way the Time Capsule does this, probably with a recent firmware update. I turned off accounts and switched back to Time Capsule password mode today, and saw the expected folder structure. However I then removed all the user data (including account folders) and left the Users folder empty. Then I went into AirPort Utility, removed all the accounts, and recreated them. When I checked Time Capsule password mode, there were no account folders. I figured maybe you had to connect as the user once before the folder would be created, but no dice. I even put some files in there then checked Time Capsule password mode, but there was no user folder and I have no idea where it's keeping the data. It's not under Shared nor is it anywhere that I can see under Users.

Hardware :: Time Capsule Transfer Speeds On Network?

Dec 1, 2010

So I've been using a 1TB Time Capsule for a while now with my old HP and recently purchased a MacPro [15 inch base model]. My room mate has a recent model Macbook as well as an older iMac. We have a 50MBPS internet connection through our local ISP. More or less I am looking for advice on how to make sure our network is:

1. Secure.
2. Faster transfer speeds between all of our computers to and from the Time Capsule. [Where to find / adjust / optimize these settings]
3. Utilize our internet connection to it's fullest potential.

I am mostly concerned with my machine [optimizing it that is.] then the rest of the computers in the house. Go slow and use medium sized words as I am still wading into the world of Mac.

Hardware :: Time Capsule And External Hard Drive - Access Data

Mar 27, 2009

I have a new mac mini and a vista pc on the same network. I want to have my pictures, videos and itunes library on a time capsule so I can access them with my mac and pc. I will not be using time capsule as a backup drive. What I want to know is if I can use an external HD to backup my time capsule content. Would it be better to plug the drive to the capsule with usb or to the mac with fw800? The reason I want a time capsule and not a nas is because time capsule is a router at the same time, which means I save space on my desk and dont have to mess around with different components for my network to work fast.

MacBook Pro :: Hard-drive Is Full, Can Move A Lot Of The Data To 3 TB Time Capsule

Jun 3, 2012

I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro 17 Inch with 750 GB of space on its hard drive.  About a month and half ago I bought a 3 TB Time Capsule and I know that Time Capsule, together with Time Machine, basically takes periodic snapshots of your hard drive and will rearrange/clean/delete files on your hard drive.  What I want to know is that since I'm about to run out of space on the internal hard drive can I move a good chunk of the data into the Time Capsule and free up that data on internal hard drive.  Videos take up about 75% of my MacBook Pro's hard drive so video's are my biggest problem.  If I can't do this with the Time Capsule I guess that's a con of the Time Capsule/Time Machine.

OS X :: Data Transfer - Using Time Machine As Backup Tool

Mar 13, 2009

I'm getting a new macbook. Currently I use time machine as a backup tool and was wondering if I should use it to transfer all my data to the new mac. One benefit of a new harddrive is the fresh install without all the junk that has built up over the years right? So wouldn't time machine just be transferring all the junk and stuff I want to the new mac? or is time machine smarter than this.

Applications :: Time Machine To Airport Extreme Data Transfer Rate?

May 25, 2009

I am doing an initial back up for Time Machine. I've got 56Gigs worth of data to back up from my 2Ghz Uni Body MacBook (with 4gig of Ram & running OS 10.5.7). I have a newly purchased Airport Extreme base station to which is connected to a Western Digital 1 Gig External HD. I am getting a transfer rate of about 1 gig per hour. Is it really this slow? I am using a 5Ghz network to reduce interference and they are very close to each other.

I tried connecting the WD drive to the MB. After I switched off Virus Barrier V5 and stopped Spotlight indexing it was quite fast. However there didn't seem a way of tricking this backup to think it was done via Airport Extreme. How could this be done?

It looks like my MB is going to have to be left on and stay at home for the next couple of days!

So here is my question : I bought this Time Capsule to have more HDD backup & save documents on it. is that a sign of defectual disk? Second question : how can i backup the Time Capsule ? If i go 500Go on it... ? I just don't want to change it, if i get the same bip with all TC when i transfer files on it.
