Hardware :: Mac Mini Running On UPS Power

Aug 2, 2010

I am getting a message several times a day that my mac mini is running on UPS power. The power is fine though. It seems like maybe I just got a bad UPS, but is there anything I should look at before I exchange it?

Mac Mini :: Working Mac Mini Power Connector?

Mar 16, 2009

Is it just mine or does this new mini power connector come out too easily? I have to be very careful removing the ethernet cable or FW800 cable lest the power connector slip out and cause a hard shutdown. It's a bit annoying.

Power Mac G5 :: No Sleep Mode Running OS 10.4

Nov 23, 2007

My old G5 dual 1.6 will not go into sleep mode. I had upgraded to 10.5 but several of my photography programs would not run so I reverted back to 10.4 by reinstalling the operating system and not wiping the drive clean. I now must shut down everytime or the G5 will get to the point that all of the cooling fans are running full speed and it will not go into sleep mode automatically. Any suggestions other than a clean install?

MacBook Pro :: Fan Running On High Power

Aug 8, 2007

My macbook fan doesn't stop running on high power (6700rpm). There is no process generating high CPU load (checked with iStat), and the macbook is on a normal desk. I've also made a SMC reset, without any improvement. I thought about reinstalling Mac OS X, but the fan already starts when I switch the computer on, so not sure if it's the OS. It's really annoying to hear the fan running all the time.

MacBook Pro :: Not Charging Or Running Off AC Power?

Apr 25, 2010

I've recently experienced a problem with my mac. It shutdown when the battery had lost all of it's juice and wouldnt charge or run off the AC power. The charger is not the problem, nor is it the battery, but I believe it has something to do with the internal power supply circuitry of the laptop. The tiny light on the tip of the charger that's usually green when fully charged or not charging and red when charging is not glowing anymore. I believe a power surge was the cause of the problem or some elctro-static discharge of some sort. Whatever the problem is, it needs to be fixed ASAP! Does anyone know what the problem might be?

MacBook Pro :: Switches Itself Off / Was Running On Battery And Had 60% Power Available?

Dec 2, 2010

I have a late 2007 MBP 15inch 2.33Ghz Core 2 Duo. I have had since new and no problems. Over this last week I have had the same issue a couple of times. The MBP just switches itself off. The first time it did it, it was running on battery (I was using Aperture) and had 60% power available. It would refuse to re-start until I connected it to the mains and then it ran fine.

Then it did the same thing overnight at some point. I had left it connected to the mains (as I always do at home), had shut the lid to put it into sleep mode. When I came back it was switched off. No-one had touched it whilst I was away but yet it had just turned itself off.The only thing that I noticed was that when I started it up both times the little light on the magsafe connecter kept flashing between orange and green. However when the computer booted into OS X both times it showed a reasonable amount of power in the battery.

PowerPC :: Applications Running Very Slow On Power Mac G5?

Jul 8, 2008

I am having a little trouble with my MAC machine. Right now, it is running very slow, and I usually work on application including Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. When I opened a file there (file size could be large), I timed it, it took 12 minutes to open & 5 minutes to print. Such situation wouldn't be normal? I was wondering if I add more memory into the system, will it help at all (increase the response time overall)? Or do I need to tune up anything to reduce the loading time?

Here are the main configurations on the MAC machine:
-Power Mac G5
-Dual 2GH z Power PC GS (2.2)
-1 GB DDR SDRAM

PowerPC :: Power G4 / Loading Running System

Sep 16, 2009

I am done with PCs as my PC died on me again....for the last time. I am a total and complete Mac newb and need an older Mac system, as I cant afford the new ones. I see the Power G4 being sold on Ebay all the time but with no operating system. My question is: How hard is to install the operating system if I were to purchase an older G4 and....the software....what should I buy? Where to purchase it? If I purchase an operating system off Ebay....how do you know it is for real and not a pirated copy? Take it easy on me guys....I am a newb with my first post. I had a guy off Craig's List who going to sell me a system...but never to be heard from again. Now....I like the looks of the old G4 and hope to learn more about them....to the point of owning one. I have read that the Power G4 is a nice machine and runs well.

MacBook :: Won't Show That It Is Running On Battery Power?

Jan 16, 2010

I have a MacBook (purchased in May) that has issues with the battery status. When the MagSafe Adapter is plugged in, it shows that the battery is charging, but when the MagSafe Adapter is unplugged from the computer, the computer does not recognize that it is running on battery power. (It still shows that it is running on A/C power.) I have already reset the System Management Controller, and it didn't work. What else can I do?

Power Mac :: G5 Fans Running And Making Loud Noise Before Crashing?

Mar 24, 2012

I was out of town so this description was second hand but the computer has been running a little weird for a while. When I have too many apps open or on a website that has a lot going on...the computer starts revving up until I quit out of everything and let it slow down. I guess while I was gone, this happened but nobody quit out the apps and it eventually turned the screen black. When I tried restarting it sounds like the computer is working but the screen is black so I can't see if it is booting up or not. I took the monitor into the apple store yesterday and it started up right away for them. It's a cinema 23" I think.

Mac Mini :: Server Reliability While Running 24 / 7

Jun 27, 2010

I have a Dell Power Edge 1600SC that I run 4 virtual servers on (I have a back up server for my office, a web server, test server, and development server). My host OS is Suse Linux Enterprise 11. I use Xen to run my guest OS's. The Dell machine is old, big, and loud. I am considering replacing my Dell server with a Mac Mini server. SL server would be my host OS and I would use VMware Fusion to run my guest OS's. I would like to hear some feedback about the hardware reliability from those out there that are using a Mac Mini server. My Dell runs 24/7 and the only time I reboot it is when I install updates that require a reboot ( usually 2 - 3 months). Is the Mac Mini server reliable to run 24/7?

Mac Mini :: Running Out Of Application Memory?

Apr 24, 2012

I have had terrible problems with my Mac Mini. Apple has replaced the hard drive twice, the SATA cable once and the optical drive once in the first year I've had it. After the latest installation of Lion, I have had repeated problems with the error "Your Mac OS x startup disk has no more space available for application memory." This is false -- I have less than half of my 500 GB in use and 4 GB of wired memory.

I believe that Safari is always running when I get this error. Also, I cannot cleanly quit Safari -- I always must force quit, b/c it hangs when I quit. The last time I got this message, Safari was using 1.26 GB of memory.

My System Memory report is all out of whack:

VM size: 221.25 GB
Page ins: 1.59 GB
Page outs: 40.15 GB
Swap used: 59 GB

This is after only 1 or 2 days of uptime. I have just a couple of weeks left on my Apple Care and am desperate to know if this is hardware problem requiring my 5th trip to the Genius Bar or if this some kind of software problem that I can fix.

On this latest Lion install, I did a clean install with no settings or applications, and I killed extensions on Safari.

It was SO fast. So, my question is this:Is the only true way to get speedy again to reformat and basically start again? What is it that I've restored that keeps me slow?

Mac Mini :: Running Dual 24" Monitors

I am new here, and have searched, but just needed to get some input. I currently have a Macbook, but want to get a Mac mini for the desk. I would like to run 2 of the inexpensive 24" monitors independently. All I use is iWork, heavy Internet, light movies, and rarely games (would like to try Starcraft 2), but mostly work stuff. Nothing intense.

What would be the earliest Mac mini that could handle this?

Mac Mini :: What Is Best Use Of It - Tower Is Freezing And Running Slow?

Jul 3, 2012

What is the best use/purpose for the Mac Mini?  My wife's G4 (Granite) Tower is ancient and slow and freezes up frequently so it's time to get another computer.   I have a 5 year old MacBook Pro sitting unused after I bought a 2.13GHz MacBook Air .  I am contemplating buying a Mac Mini or an 11 inch AirBook. The Macbook Air would give some flexibility to the household by being portable.  She does only basic stuff, nothing fancy, so anything will be better than what she's using now.  (At some point in the future, I may give my son the Airbook for college and get a new one for me, but that's not what I want to do now.)So my question to the community would be what do you recommend?

1) Reformat and use the 5 year old MacBook Pro (free)

2) Mac Mini? ($599) (I have an external monitor, keyboard and an external Mac Disk Drive so no need to buy them.)

3) MacBookAir 11 inch ($1100)

4) iMac ($1200) (I think this is overkill for her.)

Mac Mini :: Mac Mini Server As A Staging Server Running?

Feb 5, 2010

I am a web developer using Mac to develop and Ubuntu Server to deploy. It's a pretty standard setup nowadays. The time came to replace my staging server ( which I keep at my home on a dedicated IP ) and I could not resist the allure of the new Mac Mini Server. So I bought one and tried to do a Ubuntu install and thought I could sell my OSX server license as I have no need of it.I imagine a lot of people not used to Apple's policies might think like this. So how did it go? Bad and then good.As far as I have been able to ascertain, it's impossible to install Ubuntu on a Mac Mini Server ( at least without the additional DVD-ROM drive which I refuse to buy ).What's more, the OSX Server license I bought is not transferable to non-Mac Mini Server computers so I can't really sell it anyway.
