I was wondering if a new Intel Mac Mini could use a Performa monitor as its screen? Would it look just as good as a newer monitor? If not, where can I find a cheap monitor?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a VGA HP monitor that runs at a native resolution of 1680x1050 at 60Hz. I plugged the Mini in, some weird resolution came up. 1680x1050 didn't show up in "Displays". I downloaded SwitchResX, and set it to 1680x1050 at 60Hz.The resolution is now set, but the monitor is very blurry, and the dock extends beyond the bottom of the screen.I really want to get this working. I'm not quite sure how SwitchResX works so could anybody give me a hand?
View 2 Replies View RelatedBeen working with a new mac mini in my office the last 2 days. The power settings are set to make the display only go to sleep after 15 minutes. System set to never go to sleep and hard drive never spins down. 3 of the 4 times since working with this thing when moving the mouse to wake up the display I get nothing but noise and snow on the screen. To get back to functioning correctly I have to put the computer to sleep with the power button and back on again. Once it comes back, it will work fine.
New mini 2.4 running 10.6.4. Monitor is hooked up via DVI through the mini display port.
I've searched online and in threads here on the "can I use an iMac as a monitor" question, and found mostly negative answers. One exception seems to be the 27" model connected via mini-Display Port.However, I'd been hoping to connect an older (G4/DVI) Mini to a new (21.5") iMac, to use the iMac as a monitor.The only semi-hack solution I've seen is to use Screen Recycler or similar software. I have two questions, though:-Can Screen Recycler be used to mirror a desktop, not just extend it? (all info I've seen talks only about extending/2nd monitor, not mirroring).
-How's the performance?
I have a fresh install of Windows XP, service pack 2 on a boot camp partition on my macbook (13" first gen aluminum case) and a Apple LED Cinema Display attached to the mini display port.
I can't seem to make the Cinema Display the primary display (the "Use this device as the primary monitor" checkbox is always greyed out in the Display Property Settings tab). I also can't shut the macbook lid and continue to use it closed (with kb, mouse and monitor attached) like I would when booting OSX.
Is there some other way to make the Cinema Display the primary monitor, so I can leave the macbook closed when booting into Windows?
The old Mini worked fine with my Westinghouse 24" LCD monitor (HDMI input -connected to Mini via DVI->HDMI cable).The new Mini Server 2010 has HDMI out, so I used a straight-through HDMI cable. The display looks terrible! All of the fonts appear to have a 'shadow' next to them - almost like an old analog VGA with 'interference'.Thinking it could be the cable, I went back to my old Mini's DVI->HDMI cable (and used the new Mini's HDMI->DVI adapter to connect to it). Same results.The Westinghouse monitor's native resolution is 1920x1200. The Mac says that it's configured for 1920x1200.
View 14 Replies View RelatedJust bought a Samsung 2333SW Monitor and plugged it into my Mac Mini. The screen looks like the monitor was dropped (psychedelic) when the desktop is displayed. It worked fine on my 17" Samsung monitor, but not the 23".
I exchanged the monitor, and its not the monitor. I was told its the driver on the Mac. I cannot find any driver online for my Mini through Apple, or even at the Samsung sites.
Is there a noticable difference between using a mini DP DVI vs mini DP VGA to external monitor that has both types of inputs?

I have always wanted a mac and for the most part it has been money in past years that have kept me away. Aside from apple.com tutorials and playing around a few times at my local BestBuy I know very little about using them (or any computer for that matter). Between this forum, available books, and ease of use I figure it'll all work out. I do have a couple of specific questions and would greatly appreciate some advice.For me I have to go mini because I have an eye disease, and some other eye related issues that make me extremely sensitive to the LED backlit glossy displays that the imac and macbooks use. Even when dimmed. So I have no choice if I am to own a mac now, it's mac mini or nothing.

Just wanted to double check before I purchased it.
I found an old macintosh performa 5200 in the attic, and when i started it up it showed a floppy with a flashing question mark.
I heard that means that computer went to hell. Also i don't have any floppy/cd's or so (my grandpa didn't gave them along with the mac in the past).
So now i want to download os 8 and burn it on a cd to install it at the performa.
I was wondering if any one had an idea of what the value of a Mac Performa 6115 might be. It was one of my first computers, paid over $3,000 back when it was purchased, but I know its not worth much now. Thinking about putting on Craigs List. Anyone have an idea of what I should sell it for?

The problem is we all have passwords for all the accounts, but none of us remember them. (it is at ease 2.0)
Does anyone know how to reset the password? Or any other ideas how I can get into the computer?
My friend found an old Performa 6300 from 1995. It's fully working aside from the missing ADB mouse. I've been searching for an ADB to USB adapter or even an USB card but to no avail.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy wife has an old Performa 6300CD she is about to replace with a new Mac (model TBD). However, I use an IBM ThinkPad and need to transfer some old files from her Performa before she gets rid of it.
Aside from the challenge of translating Mac-formatted files and documents to IBM format, the bigger problem appears to be that the Performa seems to be dying. It never had the ability to write CDs and actually stopped writing floppies some time ago. There is no USB port. It claims to have inadequate memory to e-mail the files over, but in fact there is enough space and won't allow me to increase memory to e-mail (AOL).
Is there any way to transfer/transmit files and documents from the old Performa to my ThinkPad before it's too late?
dont know if this is the right thread but, i picked up a Performa 5200CD, from the dump, and its in perfect condition, but when you go to turn the power on, it does nothing, could this have a dead power suply, broken switch?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an old Performa 6400/180, which has been working fine up until a few days ago. Then one day I booted the machine up and was greeted by the following "bomb" message:
"Sorry, a system error occurred.
bus error To temporarily turn off extensions, restart and hold down the shift key."
I have followed these instructions, but it only gets to the "Starting Up. . ." screen and hangs while searching for extensions.
I can't find the documentation that has the OS version, but the machine was bought with whatever was current in early 1996 and has not been updated since.
I've saved some digital photos onto CD on my PC. I'd like to view them on my old Mac Performa 5200.
When I try and open a photo Quick Time Picture Viewer 3.0 launches, and I get the message "couldn't display because corrupted".
Thing is I got hold of a 1ghz 17" iMac almost for free, it had a dead logicboard (I checked it with a voltage-meter), but I figured I could fix it and have a small hobby project-thingie going on. Well I just got a new logic board today, for a 1ghz 17" iMac g4.
Things is I only get a bright grey screen from my Mac when I boot. I've tried connecting it to a external display and that works fine. Everything is there.
I then reinstalled Tiger on it, with the computer connected to my external screen. And I still have the same problem. (I have now disconnected the ext. screen and is controlling the iMac from my MBP). So at least it isn't the installation.
So what is the problem? I can via an Apple Keyboard control the brightness on the blank screen, which would indicate that it does react to input of some degree.
I've read that if the inverter is dead or anything else is dead, you would get a rolling grey screen, flicker or something like that and not a steady bright grey. One thing I'm thinking is. What if somehow this logic board was for a 15" 1ghz imac g4? Can I check this?
I read that long thread about guys buying hi-res displays for their MBPs, and they had to replace some display profile? Could I maybe fix it with a different display profile-file?
I'm really confused by all this, and would appreciate any help I can get.

With the announcement of the new Mini's, I'm considering selling my MBP and ATV and replacing them with a new Mini and iPad.
My wife already has an iPad so it would be great to solely control the Mini with our iPads but do you new a keyboard and mouse for initial installation or at any point after? It really would be a waste of money to have to buy them just to get the thing running.
Is there an app out there that can act a full BT keyboard if need be? Rowmote looks pretty sweet for day-to-day use.
That said, I don't think the Mini would get much use, the iPads would be our main net/mail/cal/etc companions, the Mini would simply be the mothership, holding all our music, videos, etc. I still need a full computer for all my photo and home movie editing, otherwise I'd consider a beaten up old powerbook or iBook.
Also, what would be the advantage of getting OSX Server? If it helps, we have no other computers in the house, only 2 iPhones and 2 iPads (potentially).
I have a Quad Core Mac Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.4. I've been having this issue for the past couple of weeks. Basically I have my monitor set to turn off after after 15 minutes of inactivity, my Mac Pro is always on. After 5 minutes of inactivity my screensaver comes on and stays on until my monitor turns off. When I move my mouse to wake my monitor, sometimes an image from the screensaver appears onscreen for a few seconds and then disappears when my desktop appears.
I have repaired Permissions, rebuilt my drive using Disk Warrior, installed the 10.6.4 Combo update but the issue remains. An image from the screensaver doesn't always appear when I turn on my monitor, this issue is sort of random. Usually my desktop appears right away with no static image from the screensaver.
so i have an ibook G4 that has a broken hard drive, but the screen still works. i was wondering if it was possible for me to be able to hook it up to my mac mini and use it as a second monitor?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a Mac Mini that I use as a HTPC with an *old* 30" CRT TV. I want to slightly repurpose the machine so that I can use it for both work and play. At first I was thinking about a 30" monitor and a TV tuner, but my 2007 Mini can't drive it at full resolution.
Now I'm thinking about a a 1080P HDTV, but I'm not sure what would be a good size if I want to use it as both a monitor (sitting relatively close) and a TV. I use a 30" Apple ACD at work and it is *plenty* big enough for my work needs, but I know the resolution of an HDTV is much lower. Any suggestions about what size is a good compromise to function as both a TV and a PC? Also, any specific model or brand recommendations? I'm new to HDTVs...
I am replacing my current Imac with a new mac mini for portability between two locations and will buy a monitor for each location. I am considering the HP w2338h monitor (23inch HD). It has a VGA and HDMI ports but doesn't have a DVI, Mini-DVI or Mini DisplayPort. Will this monitor work well with the Mac Mini or should I only get a monitor with DVI or Mini-DVI.
