If the 21.5" and 27" iMacs use the same i5 processor, why is it that the 21.5" can only be upgraded to 8G of RAM while the 27" can be upgraded to 16G? And why can you get the 1MB video card on the bigger unit?
This is a odd question, but are Intel macs louder than previous macs? I just recieved an Intel iMac as a replacement for my dead iMac G5 and both myself and my family has noticed a loud sound (Sounds like a needle playing on an old record player) which is coming from the iMac. My first iMac was very quiet, however when I start using the new iMac this odd sound keeps happening. Is this normal? I am just worried that this scratching sound might by evidence of something breaking down. Also the sound is a lot louder when under Windows XP.
PS: the sound is loud enough to be picked up on the internal microphone, however I don't know how to link the file to Macrumors.
So back in 2008 when I had a Penryn MacBook Pro, I could honestly tell the difference between using the MacBook Pro in Windows Vista vs. Mac OS X Leopard at the time. Not because they are different Operating Systems, but just by the quality of drivers Apple brings to Mac OS X vs. the crap that they bring to Windows.
But I don't understand it, particularly... I don't understand why we can't just not install Apple's crappy drivers, and go to each hardware component manufacturer's websites and download/install the default non-apple drivers ones and have the Mac run Windows just like a PC... not a Mac running Windows without running crappy drivers? Does this make sense?
I ask this because I am very interested in the MacBook Air, 13", but I also want to run Windows about 40% of the time so I am very confused on if I should buy it over the Lenovo X201 due to the terrible drivers Apple provides.
I'm in the market for a second hand G5 with Applecare. I will be using it for my recording studio as I'm sick of PCs. There are some great deals on eBay and my limit is looking around 1000.I don't understand the different specs, some can take 4 gig ram, some 8 some 16. Some are Dual Core, Dual, Quad. Which is the most powerful? What's better Dual Core or Dual CPU (I take it this is right?)
I have an Athlon 3200 XP 2.21ghz with a gig of ram right now. What Powermac G5 is similar to that speed? Also, anything else I should look out for when buying a Powermac G5?
I am aware of the heating up of the new iMacs and how they get quite hot. Mine however heats up to about 60?C (140?F) in about 10 mins with only safari running. Now i don't think this is normal even for them, is anyone having this problem, is it actually normal or do i have an especially hot iMac.
I'm new to this and haven't found anything like my problem on this website but about a month or two ago our iBook G4, which I am on right now, started to make a weird sound every so often. At first we just ignored it but then in the middle of backing up our HD the laptop started to make that sound again.
I was backing it up in one account while working in iMovie in the other and it froze. I shut it down by taking the battery out because it would not turn off any other way. I put it back in and it got to the loading screen and started to make that noise again and froze up. We recovered everything on that hard-drive and got a new one put in but I was hopping one of you fine people could tell me what went wrong.

I know that if i create a document in pages on my mac that i need to upload the doc via icould for it to show in iwork. I also know that if i access that file from my iphone or ipad and make changes to that document that it automatically updates it on icloud. Is there a way when i make changes to that document on my mac that it automatically updates it like my iphone and ipad does on icloud. Coz whats happening at the moment is every time i make a change to the doc on my mac its currently NOT updating it on icloud. I am doing something wrong or does it just not update the document?
Im having problems executing a successful screen grab on my iMac.Ive always used Shift+Cloverleaf+4 to select a portion of the screen and then get a snapshot, and that still seems to work because im hearing the photosnap sound. The problem occurs when i go to paste this captured selection, nothing happens. I cant paste it in photoshop, email, or anywhere for that matter.
I updated to iLife 09 from 06 last night. Every signal picture that I have was placed into an event. I don't want every signal picture to be in events. I tried erasing pictures from events and emptying the trash. However that did just erase my pictures from the iPhoto library totally. There's has be an easy to tell iPhoto that some pictures aren't events.
Also I tried to manually to mark some of my pictures with locations. However iphoto doesn't remember my location information that I put in. Also the maps are grayed out and yes I'm connected to the Internet.
I'd like to find out how much CPU usage is consumed when playing a 720p mkv file on my VMC player. I opened Activity Monitor and it's showing a lot of things,
1. There's CPU usage right next to VLC program which is reading between 30 to 45. 2. There's also CPU usage meter in the lower left corner in 4 different types; % User, % System, % Nice, % Idle
Now, my question is,
what is the difference between #1 and #2? And can you explain to me what % User, % System, % Nice, % Idle are in simple terms?
So if a higher resolution screen gives you a performance hit, does that mean that hooking up to an external will give you a performance hit, even if you have a standard resolution MBP?
Lately, I Greek and other symbols showing up in messages I receive in Thunderbird. An example is shown below... Katharine sent this over to me... Thought you might find it provocative.
Subject: Op-Ed Columnist - (URL) ****************** Is this Thunderbird or my machine?
I have a problem with my console: it shows an error I can't understand. "10/04/2012 12:11:50.865 com.apple.SystemStarter: waiting the veneer insert!" It is repeated many times inside the console. what does it means?
Customers participating in Apple's official support discussions (one, two) have reported that the new iMac will technically continue to run when the freeze occurs, but that it becomes impossible to control or switch to programs without a hard reset.
"Whatever was going on at the time continues, so if you were listening to music it continues to play," one user wrote. "The mouse pointer moves but you cannot select anything. Tabbing through apps doesn't work."
Significantly, some can still control basic functions from the keyboard, such as pausing music or activating the Caps Lock key.
I would like to know if Macs are used in Product Design, Graphic Design and Architecture. If you are in any of these industries your comment will be very helpful.
Also I'm a high school student and is planning to buy a iMac or Macbook if they do use Macs in the industries I mentioned above, so sudjestions on which ones would run the programs used in those jobs would be great.
The Mid-2010 iMacs all have ATI GPUs so does that point to MBPs going to ATI rather than nvidia?
Since MBPs use Apple designed graphics switching rather than nvidia's Optimus, I wouldn't see why they couldn't do the same thing with ATI as they do with nvidia.
I looked through a few pages of threads and did not see this so here I go.Is there a problem with the new iMac and their airport card? I bought a new iMac 21.5" to replace my 20" early 2007 model and the internet stayed connected to my router for maybe the first few days but now it keeps disconnecting. It sometimes will reconnect once I turn the card off and then on again other time I need to restart the computer to get it to connect. There have even been a few times when a restart does nothing for the problem. This problem is not just a once in awhile thing. Just this morning, I worked on my computer for like 20 minutes and it disconnected itself about 5-6 times while just downloading some music in iTunes and surfing this forum.
Is this just me? or is this a wide spread problem? I want to know so I can take it to the Genius Bar if this is just me to have them fix it.
I have waited along time to upgrade my trusty imac g4. I know there is allot of negative remarks, about the new imac's. gfx card, glossy screen, and now there is some negative posts about the 20'' models using a low quality "tn" type lcd screen. which is lower quality than what was used in the last imac model line. Does any body know what was used in the last line of imac g4's late 2004. will this screen be comparable or worse than my g4?
Is it possible to upgrade the graphics memory on the new 27" iMACs? They give the option of 1 or 2 GB of memory but is that one of those soldered in components or can memory be added after the purchase?
I am thinking of using paypal for taking payments. I signed up to their business account (using my business email) then started looking at all available options, I sent my private email a few 'payment requests' and invoices etc, just to see how everything workedWell I was obviously experimenting too much as when I try and enter paypal now I can the following Bad RequestYour browser sent a request that this server could not understand.
I can't understand why Apple didn't support Snow Leopard for iCloud. There are a lot of us who still have computers that can't run Lion.I have three Macs running at home, but only one will run Lion, but I'm running SL on it, because Lion keeps crashing, locking up, or failing to boot. Now comes along Mountain Lion.I'm not sure I will upgrade to it, due to the problems I've had with Lion.I have an iPad coming in about two weeks and I'm hoping I can use this to access all my iCloud data. Jobs must have been out of the loop on this one.
Info: MacBookPro Dual 2.8GHz 4GB, Mac OS X (10.7.2), I now have 8GB memory
I currently have about 8 iMacs in our lab on OS X 10.5.8 with all of their updates. When attempted to reach an SMB share on a Windows 2008 server by way of smb://10.x.x.x each mac starts to error. It reaches the server and asks for their login, but after the correct info is inputted the mac starts to act up. The apple menu disappears and so does every icon on the desktop. The finder navigator becomes inaccessible and you aren't really able to do anything until the computer is forced to shut down by holding down the power button. I turned on Activity Monitor and then tried to connect to a server and saw that the processes Finder and ReportCrash both appear and then disappear about every 15 seconds or less. Over and over again with no popup reporting the crash to the user.
