Final Cut Pro X :: How To Move Clip Up / Down But Locked In Place
Sep 3, 2014
In FCP 7 I'd just hold down the Shift key when moving clips up or down (on tracks). What would be the keystroke to do that in FCP X? So I can move audio clips up and down, but not sideways?

I'm doing a quick promo. I recorded a rough script VO, organised my clips and music.
I then had the professional voiceover artist record a revised script.
However, I can't simply replace my original script as we have added a couple of things. What I would have done under 7 is lock the background music and video clips in place, remove the VO timeline, and then replace each bit separately. However, I can't do that because the video clips have connected themselves to each other.
I also have shuffled a couple of things around so need to keep the video the same, but move the audio to a different part. I can move the video without moving the audio, but I can't move the audio without moving or deleting the video.
I have alot of long clips that I want to edit down in events. When I reject a segment of a clip, I move the rejected to trash but it takes the whole clip with it and not just the segment. Is this normal? Is there a way around it? MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)
Talking about wild audio tracks not directly related to video clips.
I find I want to attach a particular audio clip to a different video clip (given that without tracks it has to be attached to SOMETHING). Is there a way to move an audio clips affiliation to an alternate video clip? Especially without having to drag it out of place to do so?
Which leads to another question: is there any way to freeze an audio clip in place?

I installed the Avery download to make business cards. It is just what I need as it is just to make simple personal cards. However, I have a couple of clip art images on my PC I would like to use. How do I find the place DesignPro stores their clip art so I can add something?
Today, all of a sudden, all my files and folders are locked in place wherever they may be - on the desktop, in the documents folder, everywhere. I can't drag them anywhere. They're stuck.
In compositing, I sometimes need to use snippets from previous episodes, e.g an audio grab from an older program, or a 5 sec preview.
Is there a fast, direct way to regenerate that grab within my new movie so I don't need to save the entire source movie along with the back up of my new movie?

I am able to create a multicam clip, and when I double click it it drops to the timeline & appears in my Angles viewer. However, when I hover my mouse over the 3 different angles it doesn't change to the blade, nor does clicking the clips themselves seem to make any cuts. In short, I have a multicam clip that I can set up but cannot edit. Have the Pro Manuals & watched many how to videos but I cannot tell what I'm doing differently.
I have a long videoclip that i have spent hours keywording. The masterclip was first synched with audio from a external source, the keyworded into smaller sections. These sections cannot be stabilized... The stabilize function is not in the inspector for these clips.
After I create Compound Clip, I open the Inspector Window to see the location of where this clip is residing. But it just states (in the Inspector Window) under Location is (Multiple Files).
Is the CC just acting as a pointer to the files that I created the CC with ... or am I just not looking at the correct location / information?
I recently cropped a clip but I still want it to take up the whole screen, the reason I cropped it was because I did not want the unnecessary space. Is there a way that I can enlarge the clip so that it takes up the whole screen again?
I am running Final Cut Pro 7 and I have a clip that already has RGB Balance filter and Key filter on it. I am adding Brightness Contrast or any of the other Gamma Correction type filters to the clip, It lets me adjust the filter but when I render it this filter is not included in the render. I have done some experimenting and it seems that the RGB balance is what is stopping this filter from being applied.
I have tried with all the possible filters that will let me adjust the levels on the image, I have tried taking the clip with the first two filters and nesting it then applying the new filter to the nested clip but nothing seems to work. This clip is too dark...
I have a Library containing 22 Events which are numbered instead of named. Each event contains Green Screen clips whose thumbnails all look the same. I found the set of (Piece to Camera) clips I want, using a keyword search of the Library - but now I want to create a Compound Clip in the relevant Event so that I can do a rough edit (discard unsuitable and duplicated narrative etc).
Next, I want to copy the remaining good clips from this Compound to a new Project - in a different Library. I don't want to copy the unwanted clips. My problem is, finding the Event these clips originated from. I can use the disclosure triangle on each Event in turn, but surely there's a better way to find the parent Event of a clip in the browser?
I changed my mind on my workflow and want to link to external media rather than copying them to my libraries. That said...Is there a way to change the clip references?I went into the "Original Media" folder of the library, deleted the clip.
Then when I went back into the library, and went to "relink" the missing media. I navigated to the clip on the external source. However, it automatically created a copy again. I didn't see anywhere where I can opt to relink it as an external link rather than copy to library.
I already have a folder of media on the same drive. When I go to import the files, FCPX has add to library selected and won't let me select "leave in place". Is there a preference or setting somewhere that will let me reference the files?
I have several clips in the Timeline that I want to change the duration. I just want one frame taken away from each clip. So I click on the clip in the Timeline, then Control+D to show duration in the Dashboard. I type in the new duration I want, which is one frame less. It takes one frame off the Back of the clip. How do I get it to take the frame off the Front of the clip?

I did a shoot with audio on a green screen stage. I have some video clips of my actors shot on a RED Scarlett in 4K 29.97.I have audio clips recorded on a Zoom H4 with a boom mic at 16 bit 44.1 khz.
I take the 2 clips in FCP X and I create a synchronized clip. The video clip doesn't have an audio channel so I have to manually sync using the slate. I have the correct audio clip and the correct video clip, but the audio clip is longer than the video clip. It's just running a tad slower than the video clip. I tried creating a project in 44.1khz instead of 48khz and FCP X didn't treat it any differently.
Was poking ignorantly into the features of the project library of a project I had on the timeline. Something I did made the project on the timeline to change in appearance to this:
What I had done to get the appearance of clips to change and what I should do to get the appearance back!

I've been trying to to export my Audio from FCPX 10.1.3 as Separate Files (per Roles) from a Multicam clip but it stops and freezes after exporting the first Audio track listed in the export setting. Example:
I have a Multicam clip with 3 Audio Roles (Bob, John and Marc, all assigned to their Audio Roles). When i export Audio as Roles (separate files), i then select all the Roles i want to export: Marc + John + Bob. It will export up to 35% or so and freeze. Then i look in the Finder location of the export to see the audio of Marc only.
If i put John + Marc + Bob, i will see the Audio for John only and so on.If (i have to at this point) i cancel the export, the audio file gets deleted and i get nothing out of FCP. Is there a way to export Audio as Separate Roles file from a Multicam clip or do i need to add all the Audio clip separately from the Multicam on the Timeline?
I'm adding the audio in the Multicam clip so that, if i want to remove a chunk of video from the timeline, The audio attached to it will also be removed and everything stays sync'ed after the cut i made.
I tried Detaching the Audio from the Main Timeline. I then get the Audio but still in a "multi cam" bundle. When i select that and look in the Inspector, i see all the Roles but i can't Export like i want to.

my Final Cut Pro 10.1.3 is crashing when I try to edit a simple 2 minute video clip.I have been doing a web video series for over 2 months now uploading videos every day - with no problems using this same workflow but now I am stuck and have a deadline coming up in 24 hours.
I shoot with a Sony EX-3 camera using SxS cards which create XDCAM-EX files and I bring these into FCP via a Sony SxS external Thunderbolt reader, edit and share to Facebook. I have an orange LaCie Thunderbolt drive that store my Library and Project files. I have done this 70+ days in a row w/ zero problems. Now, any time I try to get tomorrow's video ready, FCP crashes
I re-start FCP, my Mac (I use a new MacBook Pro that works seamlessly).I run latest Mavericks OS.The only different thing that happened otherwise is I got some TuneUpMyMac freeware on my Mac when I restart which I never chose to get and cannot delete this because it doesn't show up and I am concerned it is a virus that is messing up FCP
I'm having some difficulty adding a dissolve transition to a title that is connected to a clip in the primary storyline. I've tried leaving it as a connected clip, I've tried putting it in a secondary storyline, I've tried using both the dissolve transition and ramping the opacity, but no matter what I do or how long I make the dissolve, it only seems to last about 5 frames.I'm coming to FCPX as a veteran of FCP studio, and this was something I did quite regularly and quite easily. I'm using the most recent version of FCPX.
after color balancing a clip I get a flickering border on top and bottom of my clips, visible in timeline and also after rendering. It's easy to see in this clip (starts around 15 seconds in): URL....
If I remove the color balance it will go away. I wonder if it has to do with the source clip being in 1080i instead of p. The preceding clip is also color balanced but is in 1080p. It's less noticeable but sometimes still there when other color correction is invoked. I'm using a late 2013 Haswell 27 in iMac with 8gb ram.

I import clips from a flash memory drive (the one attached to Sony NX5U camera). The drive is connected with USB cable. All clips imported are fine except one. The problematic one is in the AVCHD category in the browser and has a little camera icon on the bottom left of it's thumbnail. I cannot share the project containing that clip (there is a message that says:''this Item cannot be shared while it is still referencing media on the camera''). What does that icon mean and how do I import the clip properly ? I tried importing the clip again and it does the same thing...
When I sync one audio file with one video file the video file is always placed in the primary storyline and the audio file is always placed under it. And the new syncronised clip is named afte the video file.
when I sync multiple audio files to one video file. It seems to be random what file endsup in the primary storyline of the new compound clip, most of the time is seems to be one of the audio files. This is troublesom as the syncing acuracy is then limited to the frame as the smallest incrament of adgustment. Also, it menas I have to manualy change the names of my now syncronised clips as the names are not consistant making sorting dificult. (This all results in a lot of time spent fixing this behavoir and realy dampens the advantages of the sync feature.)
the video should not be the primary track in a new syncrosnised compound clip and I can't find any link between my behavoir and the resulting choise of which tile is the primary sortyline track.
I have Final Cut Express 4 running on an iMac with Leopard 10.3.5. The problem I have is I cannot hear a music track & the sound track on the film clip at the same time when I run the clip. I only hear the clip sound track until it finishes then the music track plays. If I drag the scrubber bar along the time line I can hear both the music & the Clip sound track together. This only happens when I logon to the Mac as an Administrator. (I have never managed to hear both sound tracks together whilst logged on as Administrator.)
In desperation I created a user account on my iMac. If I logon as a user Final Cut Express 4 works ok ? I hear both sound tracks together when I play the clip. Any ideas how I can make the Administrator account work as the User account does? As the iMac is only used by myself I don?t need any user accounts.
