Desktops :: Can I Transfer Files From My Mac To My Notebook?
Aug 17, 2010
i have an iMac G3 17" running OS 10.2.8- my question is: by connecting my Mac to my WindowsXPHome netbook, with a USB cable, can I transfer files from my mac to my netbook. i would only be transferring .pdf,.jpg,.tiff. only file formats for which i have programs on the netbook which open those file formats. i need to know if this is possible before i buy a double ended USB2 cable for this purpose.
I have a 2011 Macbook Pro and an older (5 year old) Western Digital external hard drive. I have always used this hard drive for both mac and windows. Recently, however, whenever I go to transfer a file from the mac to the WD hard drive, the little transfer window pops up and it appears to initiate the transfer. However, it never fully starts it. It appears to "get stuck" in that initiating stage, showing zero of 3.16 gb transferred and shows an unknown transfer time. This happens no matter how long I leave it open. Again, I have used this external hard drive with my macs for the past 5 years without any problems until now. I haven't moved or modified the WD hard drive
I have an eMac with a PPC G4 processer. 1GB ram, using Mac OSX 10.4.11. recently I tried to split a Youtube video clip into 2 segments. Unfortunately I input the wrong instructions and ended up with over 3700 4kb files on my desktop. Totally overloaded. Is there any way I can delete these 3700 files without trashing other needed files on my desktop?
After every reboot or restart, I just started seeing a new file named "Recovered files" in the trash containing fonts. All fonts in there are system fonts. I remember this happening in OS9 but I never had this in OSX before. I close all apps before shutting down.OSX 10.5.8 Dual 2.3 GHz PPC G5 5 GB DDR2 SDRAM NVIVIA GeForce 6600 256 VRAM
I'm on a G4 running 10.4.11. Recent strange behavior include mouseovers invoking clicks; cycling windows (programs and finder.) These annoyances seemed to have fixed themselves after restart. Now, many (not all) of my preferences have been changed requiring manual reset: auto login on start-up; internet connection. But the most problematic is that my CS3 programs won't launch due to one reason or another (missing licensing permissions or files; different messages with each program.)
I launched Disk Utility (using both Safe Boot and the Install CD) but Repair Permissions failed with a No Valid Package message
I'm banging my head against the wall with this problem. I have a new MBP 13", 4GB Ram, etc etc. When I transfer files across my network (or the office network), it will consistently fail to transfer a few of the files. For instance, I just tried to copy 50 photos to an SMB share on our server here at the office. The transfer window show the progress of 50 files, but when I look at the folder, there are only 48 files. Sometimes I get less, sometimes I get all 50. The same goes for my home network to an SMB share. I've confirmed this failure over N and G networks. The AP at home and the office are different models and I went as far as purchasing a new one for home since I thought it was the problem. Same results. Is there some hardware error going on here with my wifi card? Is there any way to test it? Are the SMB shares the problem?
I want to keep my school files on desktop two so they are all in the same place, and use desktop one as a place to perhaps save photos or other files not school related. When I swipe between desktops, the school files move between the desktops as I swipe but I want to keep them on one desktop all the time.
I have recently purchased a USB stick so that I can plug into my tv to watch movies on. However when transferring AVI files from my Mac onto my USB stick it seems to transfer the whole file but when I try to watch it through quicktime or on TV it is unable to read the file. The thing is it is not happening to all my AVI files as some of them are able to be transferred to USB and work fine but then others are not working and I am not sure what the difference is. The AVI files all work fine on my Mac before I transfer them but something is breaking down when they are transferred.
I've just got a new Macbook. I'm trying to transfer some files from one computer to the next. I get the box asking for me to accept and it looks like it's transfering the files. But nothing happens. It just does that forever with nothing being transferred. Is there a setting I'm missing? Also, is it possible to transfer folders? In the past I could only do single files at a time.
i'm buyin the new 15'' mbp this weekend and i need to transfer all of my files from my hp laptop over.what would be the easiest way to do so? i was thinking of using an external hd and just moving everything over but i hear that hd's formatted for pc's dont work on mac's and vice versa. is there a way i can just plug a cable between the two laptops and have things transfer?
I'm planning on buying a 17" MBP (anti-glare) in the coming weeks and my wife wants my current 15 MBP, no problem.
My question is what is the best, most efficient way to transfer all my files, programs & settings from the 15" to the 17"?
I've got the 15" setup just right (for me) as I use it for personal & business tasks. It also has Parallels w/XP that I MUST have for work. I'd really like it if all my email & password settings were able to transfer without issue as well.
Do I use Migration? restore Time Machine? or something else?
I assume then I can use the same steps to set the 15" MBP up for my wife from her iMac.
I am upgrading the HD on my UMBP to a 500 gig Scorpio Blue , and putting the original one in the case which is USB only, NO firewire only USB. What would be the best method for transferring my information from the old to the new? I did do a search here on the forums but did not find anything that really hit the nail on the head so to speak.
i have a macbook 13 inch aluminum, and i was wondering if there was anyway, i could drag a file from my pc desktop, and drop it onto my mac desktop, without putting it into any sort of folder. i have searched all over google and youtube for the answer, but i cannot find anything.
Im trying to transfer extremely large files from one external hard drive to another, a La Cie to a WD. By large i mean 100-300GB. It starts to transfer and then says a file containg that name already exists. here is how it is setup La Cie(Content) --Firewire 800---->Macbook Pro---FireWire 400--> WD(empty) im trying the drag and drop method. Am i doing something wrong is there a free program that can do this for me?
I'm on OSX 10.6 and I'm trying to wireless transfer files from my Windows 7 PC to this Macbook. So far I have enabled file sharing and enabled the Windows SMB. The Windows computer is connected to WORKGROUP. This computer is connected to WORKGROUP as well I guess? I don't know how to tell. Anyway, what is the next step? I tried just typing smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx in the Go > Connect to Folder but that didn't work.
there just wondering as my mate just got a mac and has put alot of songs on his itunes and i wanted to now is there anyway i can transfer some of his music files to my itunes. Is this ok to do or is it a copywrite issue.
I am trying to get data from my 1995 Performa 630 to my recently delivered MacBook Pro. All suggestions gratefully received.
Also, are ClarisWorks files instantly readable by modern office software, or do I need to save in RTF or some other format, first, on the older machine?
I have some movies I created a while back with iDVD.The finished file is a .mov file and I would like to now put this in iTunes so I can sync it with my iPhone and iPad to watch the movies I created.I can't seem to figure out how to get those files into iTunes so I can sync them with my devices and play them on my mobile devices.
This is what i have is a 27inch 17 Imac and a 13inch mbp. I would like to make a exact copy of what on my imac and put it on my macbook and take my macbook to work and school. Then come home and then Take what i did on my macbook pro and tranfer downloaded files/applications/documents andto the imac once i get home. I this possible if so how?
Could anyone here recommend an easy way to backup files, info, etc from a PC and then transfer them to a Mac? It's an 09 24" iMac if that makes any difference.
When I set up my new mac it offered me the ability to transfer my files from one computer to another. Silly me, I was tired, and chose not to do it at that time.
How do I get back to that screen? And, is it difficult? I have slightly more ability than basic but am not a guru. And I admit to not having done this in years, I normally just copy things on cd rom, but if there is a simple way, this would be great.
I really only want my photographs to transfer. It is easy to do my files.
I could I know download my pics from me.com but I think it would take forever as they are at full resolution.
I have both my new Mac Pro and my old G4 connected to a cable modem through a router. Can someone tell me (or direct me to a walkthrough) of how I can see my G4's drives on my Mac Pro to transfer files, rather than remove and install drives. Basically, I guess that would be setting up a LAN?
Wanting to move a large number of files via ethernet from an older macbook to a newer one. Dont want to user MA either.
I know Ive seen it said that you can do this using Appletalk, but now I cant find any info about it. Googling, I only came up with links dealing with pc -> mac transfer, or old info, like g3 imac -> imac, that type of thing.
Seems when I saw this it said to use Appletalk from the network settings. Is that all it takes? Do I just check 'make appetalk active'? As far as the 'appletalk zone', what goes there? And I assume 'configure automatically' is the best selection there.
transferring files and apps from my PB G4 to my new Air. I am going to do the clean-up first, then sync what I can from Mobile Me but there are still some apps that will not sync - hoping just to be able to transfer them over to the Air simply!
