View 4 RepliesI hate MS Word, but I find that I can't get rid of it just yet. I love Pages, but I need the thesaurus capabilities of word. I need to be able to right click on a word and have synonyms come up in that very menu, no opening dictionary or another pop-up.
View 13 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to 'bulk' add new words to the InDesign dictionary? I do a lot of menus and a lot of the food terms come up as spelling mistakes.
I was wondering if there was a quicker way to customize the dictionary than telling the spell check to learn the words as I go. EG add one huge text file to the dictionary with all the words or something.
I still get beach balls when doing the basic of things. For example, it sometimes takes 10 seconds for the dictionary to come up after right clicking a word and selecting "look up dictionary". Then again, sometimes it is instant. Similar things happen when looking at a document that is a .pdf, for example, and I want to save as a jpeg. Whether I go to "save as" or through the "print" and then selecting "save as a pdf", it can beach ball for 8-10 seconds.
I thought it may have been a ram problem and from another thread I discovered the "activity monitor" and have that running constantly in the dock showing me "System Memory" and for the stuff I'm doing, it hardly ever gets close to half the pie chart.
I'm looking for a Firefox add on that will allow me to select a word and right click and select some kind of "view definition" or something.
I've done a search and fond a really good one, but it's not available for the latest version of FF. I've also seen a few that were PC only but the rest I've been finding are more like spell checkers.
I am a college student who has just started into the medical field, and I am wondering if there is a plugin for Dictionary or another application entirely that would allow me to have a Medical Dictionary on my computer?
I do not really need something with definitions, I just need something that can handle my spell checking for my weekly papers that I need to hand in.
I realize that this is probably not the best place to ask, but the people who I asked in my class including my instructor said that I am pretty much out of luck unless I just want to search each one through a website.
What I would love is if there is something that would work with Pages, but I will live with Word if one exists.
Looking for a true English dictionary, thesaurus for my computer?
MUST be British English as American English is quite different, different spelling and many words unknown in American English language.
It works in the widget mode, that is, when I press F3, the dictionary shows on the screen as usual, but it doesn't show up when I click on the dictionary icon under the applications menu.

View 1 Replies View RelatedThe dictionary app only shows the part of the article that corresponds with the window. Can't scroll down or up. Even in my new i5, which hasn't been altered in any way. Resizing or this solution don't work. (Make sure private browsing is turned off in Safari, and don't delete the cache. You also have to do this every 30 days, which sux.) [URL]

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have spell check activated in mac mail but it does not pick up the small letter i. I had this problem before with my PC and was able to correct it by "adding" it to the dictionary. I m unable to figure out how to do it with mac mail and was hoping for some assistance.

View 1 Replies View RelatedUsually, when you type a word on the search bar, it will display many words that are related to your search, like when I am searching for the word "lamb"...
And it will display the definition when you click on the word.
However, when I use it on my Mac (MacBook Pro 13"), it display nothing, just a blank, like this when I looked at the word "lame"...
It would be really great to be able to bookmark some words you want to remember or review in the native dictionary, thus keeping a list of them for future reference. Of course you can copy paste to anywhere and keep them thus but I was looking for something simpler and more straight forward. Any plug ins or third party apps?

Can't figure out the Spelling function -
Words that are clearly misspelled don't get a little red squiggle under them. And when I click "check spelling" some of these mistooks are ignored.
I have selected "check spelling as you type" but I have my doubts that it is working as I'm a horrible speller and it's not catching my goofs.
Can't find a place to set the dictionary.
I see Pogue has a Missing Manual for '08 coming in January, but I don't want to wait that long.
I recently downloaded Quicksilver. Fantastic program! I'm looking for one similar that offers a quick-launch function and a wide option of search capabilities. For example, I would activate the program by hotkey (like Quicksilver), then search a word/phrase (like "biology," "Africa," "bill of rights," etc.) The program would then give a definition, synonyms, wikipedia entries, about.com entries, etc. based on that term. I know there are widgets that do similar tasks, but not one that is collective/expansive, nor one as quick as an application like Quicksilver.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've realized that sometimes I "lose" my wireless signal. I am not using an AirPort router (I'm using Linksys, if that's at all helpful). I've noticed that suddenly all of the wireless signals disappear from the AirPort menu up on the menu bar, except the network that I am connected to (i.e., I only see my router's name there). It also becomes impossible for me to browse the internet, so what I've done to troubleshoot this is disable the AirPort, put the computer to sleep, and disconnect/reconnect my router. When I turn it on, it seems to work. I've also tried simply disabling and then re-enabling AirPort, but it doesn't work after that.

However if I look for it under the finder menu bar, the arrow beside service says 'building'. But I've been waiting for hours and it doesn't look like anything's happening.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently bought myself a Macbook Pro 13-inch model and I've been loving it so far. One thing that really bugs me is how bad the menu navigation is in OS X. I just read this on Macrumors and the only way to access menu from keyboard is by using ctrl+F2 key for which I have to press ctrl+fn+f2 key since F2 is a secondary function. Also, there is no way of going directly to the middle of the menu by keyboard shortcuts, right? If that is true, Mac OS X is still not polished enough for laptops. is there are a better way to control the menu items?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm just thinking, the File, Edit, etc., menus seem to be becoming more and more obsolete, as things move into the main window, look at Google Chrome, or Office 2011, I know Apple apps haven't done it yet, and maybe it's just because I'm from Windows recently, but it just seems to take up space unnecessarily.
View 24 Replies View RelatedI have seen many screenshots (like the one below) of modified menu bars that have probably been made using some application. I like how you can change the WiFi icon to cell bars. And I have no idea how they got links to Macintosh HD, movies and TV shows on the desktop. Does anyone know what app that is?
And on the desktop, I have seen that some people have their iTunes album artwork and the song playing show on their desktops. I have many different commands, like the date and time, running on my desktop using Geektool. But I have never thought that geektool would be able to show the artwork though. Is there another app that lets you have this or is it also geektool?
How I can add a shortcut to any application in the menu bar?

My safari menu bar is missing. The menu bar for desktop, HD, and apps appears, but when I click on Safari, it disappears, so I can no longer see my buttons for History, etc. I think my husband (pc user) clicked it away when borrowing my computer.
Info:
MacBook
Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.8)
Lately the right side of my menu bar (clock, volume, user name) has been freezing up. I can use the rest of my menu bar fine and everything else is okay but when I put my pointer by my clock I get the beachball. The only time I know it is frozen is when I realize its been "3:50pm" for a very long time now. Is there a way to reset it without restarting my computer?

Challenge: -The application has no way to program a key command for edit > insert > file (that I could find)Failed tries with Automator:Recorded a "watch me do" sequence using the mouse. Sometimes it works and sometimes it glitches badly; the cursor moves very slowly in places I never recorded and the script runs for several minutes until I press the restart button. I believe that nothing changes on the machine between attempts - very peculiar.Recorded a "watch me do" sequence using 'control' + 'function' + 'f2' to highlight the apple in the menu bar at the top of the screen then navigated to edit > insert > file using the arrow keys. Unfortunately it doesn't work when run. In the workflow,"'control' + 'function' + 'f2'" is shown as"'control' + '(a symbol I don't know - see attached screenshot line 1 of the workflow)'"The arrow keys pressed are then not recognized at all. (Line 2 in the workflow is from pressing return.)A seemingly simple task is really perplexing me. I'm sure there's a simple solution though.
View 1 Replies View Relatedwell i guess like most people i like to customize my mac. so i was wondering how i could change the color of my menu bar to black and have the text (the apple and the file, edit ect) to white. i have custom icons and docks but this has eluded me. i have tried to change the bar to transparent and have the wallpaper behind it be the color i want but that doesn't help change the color of the text and i doubt its the best solution.
