Applications :: Finding ITunes Download Location
Jan 13, 2009
I have 2 x 1TB WD External Hard drives which hold all my audio/video content. One of these is full and this is the one that is located in the iTunes Music Folder Location. If I change this path to a path on the other drive which has space, is it going to mess up what I already have in my tunes library? I have keep iTunes organised and copy to iTunes music folder both unticked.

He "opened" a word document from yahoo email, saved it, but can't find it again.
I suspect the person saved the document in the temporary download folder, but can't find the path to it (found the hidden cache folder but that wasn't it). Anyone got any clue on where the document could be found?

I've followed several tutorials on how to get this done, as it seems so simple but it's not working on my end. I've moved the iTunes folder from the /music/ to an external hard drive. I'm opening iTunes, going to Preferences, Advanced, and replacing the iTunes Media folder location to the correct one /Volumes/Volume E/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media Â
I'm checking Keep iTunes Media folder organized & Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library, clicking on the "OK" button, and nothing happens.Â
Funny enough, Spotify finds it in seconds and I can play my music from that player instead.

i did a "clean" install of leopard today and have everything back to normal except for my address book address's. i have backup's on my time machine drive, but where would the address file(s) be located on it? simply copying the address book from the applications folder does not do it of course.

I moved my iTunes media folder to an external hard drive to free up space on my iMac's hard drive. The new one is located on a hard drive attached to my Airport Express. Since then, I keep getting messages stating that certain items weren't copied to my iPhone because the originals couldn't be found. When I check, the iTunes media folder has reverted to the location on my iMac's main hard drive.Â
How can I prevent this? At best this is annoying, but it also is using up hard drive space unnecessarily. Is this behavior avoidable, or is it something that goes with the territory when you move your media folder to an external hard drive?

Is the there a way to force iTunes to store my mobile applications on my external drive automatically?I have my library set to an external and all my music, movies, etc goes onto the proper location except the mobile applications. I know I can use the consolidate library command, which will move the apps to the external. But as soon as I d/l another app iTunes begins saving them to the default folder again.

I have a strange problem at least to me. Recently I moved my iTunes library to an external drive and all went fine. I used the consolidation tool to achieve the task and all went just fine. Since doing this every time I open iTunes the location of the library has changed back to my local drive.
For example...
I set it to: volumesmediaiTunes Media
and it is automatically changed to: usersmemusiciTunesiTunes Media

I need a tool/method that does only two thing:
- rename a folder containing music files
- report the changed location to iTunes
If I rename the a folder by hand or with a tagger, iTunes won't know the music's new folder name.
How can I rename a folder and report iTunes the new location for the media files?

Looks like in syncing my iPad, it tries to place the backup of my device in MobileSyncBackup on my C boot drive, which is an SSD without space, even when my iTunes install and iTunes library folder is in my 2 TB D drive.
Is there any way to permanently make iTunes place its backup elsewhere?

a friend of mine has some problems with his iTunes library. The situation is as follows: he has a large collection of music, the library is stored on an external drive which is always connected to the 12 inch Powerbook when starting up iTunes.
Lately, songs that are imported from CD's are listed correctly in the library but they won't play. When checking the info it says the location of the song is in a folder under applications on the internal harddrive, for example iWeb:Contents:Resources:no.Iproj:Templates :White Blog.webtemplate
and it links to a strange file like a .png or something like that.
When searching for the song in spotlight it turns out that the song is stored in the correct folder in the iTunes media folder on the external drive.
Is this strange or what! I hope somebody has an idea what could be the problem.

I have my iTunes music on an external drive. I set the location of the iTunes Music Folder to the location on the external drive in Preferences. But next time I open iTunes, it's reset back to the location on the built-in HD where iTunes places the folder by default. External HD is sometimes disconnected (though not when I'm resetting it). Maybe if iTunes can't find the drive it reverts back? Powerbook G4, OSX 10.4.11, iTunes 7.7.1.

iTunes 8.1 just keeps bugging out on me. I set my iTunes Music Folder Location to a folder on my Time Capsule, but when i exit out and relaunch iTunes, the folder location is reset back to the default iTunes Music folder on my system drive! Why does this keep happening? Anyone else having this problem? I don't want to have to point my location back to the Time Capsule each time I load up iTunes.
A thing to note is however, is that my library file (and other misc itunes files) still remains in the iTunes folder on the system drive. Would that have anything to do with this?

This morning I tried to play one of my albums and it told me it wasn't able to locate the files (on my external disk) so I located them manually and for some reason it has created a new iTunes folder in the root of my HDD (even though the iTunes prefs still pointed at the external disk) and moved the files in to that.
I deleted the album from the library and then imported the files from the new folder. It imported them fine and copied them to the exiting iTunes folder in the ext HDD but then immediately copied them back to the wrong iTunes folder. Then it told me it couldn't find them again!
I've now discovered 4 other albums that it's doing the same thing with and no matter what I do I can't get them to import, stay on the ext HDD and remain connected.
I've re-installed iTunes and restored my library file from before I upgraded to 10.1.1(4) but it's still doing the same thing.

I have several thousand songs organized with a certain Artist/Album/Song structure. I also have uncategorized folders in my music folder with a bunch of random songs inside. Is there a way to sort the music list in iTunes by location, so I can choose all the songs in that folder to add to a playlist, or can I make a smart playlist that takes all the songs in the folder (and scans for new ones whenever)? If not, is there something else I can do to accomplish this?

I've got to a point where the HD on my MacBook is just too small to hold my music library, so for a while now, I've been housing it on an external drive hooked up to an Airport Express. My setup certainly isn't without its fair share of problems.
Setup: I keep my own folder structure, with folders for specific categories and playlists. iTunes's music folder structure has never been organized enough for me, so I don't use it. Another reason is I have music in my library that isn't in iTunes (since I don't frequently use it). My music library resides on an AirDisk, while my iTunes database along with some local music folders resides on my Mac.
Problems: Whenever I move songs/albums/playlists from the local storage on my Mac to my remote library, I have to go through and reselect the file location on the AirDisk for every file. I've also noticed that files on my AirDisk typically appear with an exclamation next to them, won't sync to my iPhone, and won't play in things like iTunes DJ unless I manually mount the AirDisk. Even then, iTunes only sees the specific song I clicked. iTunes still thinks other songs on the AirDisk are unavailable (even though the AirDisk is mounted), and thus skips them when playing unless I specifically click a song. Finally, whenever I move my music library around (like putting it on a NAS), I have to go through and manually change the location of each and every song!
All of these problems makes me think there has to be a better way! I've read about using iTunes to relocate the iTunes music library or database to a different disk, using the "Consolidate Library" feature and other built-in features, but it doesn't seem like any of these would work with a custom folder structure. I also know there are various 3rd-party "helper" apps available, but I haven't looked into them. Perhaps a 3rd-party app could simplify the process?

I tried out iGetter and Downloader as download managers. I then removed them both. However when I now click on a download click nothing happens. I suspect that there is some remnant of one or both which tries to call the program but can't find it.

I recently downloaded Get Tube and would like to be able to have a song in mp3 format off You Tube. The problem I am having is finding where the song goes after I download it off Get Tube. I went into preferences and selected the song to go into my users/name/downloads but when I look in there after the song is done, it is not there. In fact, it is no place to be found. Anyone know why I might be having this problem?

Since the last upgrade I seem to have a problem changing the download location. Safari seems not to accept locations outside the home folder even with the same permissions (drwx------) and no log entries are generated. I've also tried 0777 with no success. Also, I've tried to create links to the external directory but it still defaults back to the home directory. I had some success with Automator - Finder move - but it gives me a 'disk full' error when downloading.

I upgraded the internal hard drive in my MacBook Pro and cloned it from my old one via SuperDuper! after a Time Machine restore failed to boot. However, now the new hard drive's icon no longer sits in the top right corner of the desktop, despite it being selected as the startup disk. Instead there's just a huge gaping hole. If I move it there and then "clean up" the selection it shoots off down the other end of the desktop.
How can I permanently have the HD icon back where it used to be? I've tried repairing permissions and deselecting and reselecting the display of HDs in the finder prefs but neither worked.

Equipment: Mac Mini (Early 2009), Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GHz, 4 GB RAM, Lion. I started noticing my Mac Mini was having trouble reconnecting my Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, slow processing (spinning pinwheel of death), and programs freezing. I did a recovery within Lion from the recovery drive and it seemed to work for a week or so. It started acting up again. So, I decided to erase the HD and reinstall Lion. I basically use the Mac Mini as a server for all my iTunes content. Â
My iTunes default save location is to my Drobo storage unit. Now that I have reinstalled Lion, I am looking for the easiest, most convenient, and safest way to change the default save location in iTunes and then importing the media. It would be nice if it was possible to just simply change the default save location to the folder I previously had all my media saved in and it would just magically appear in iTunes. Everything was organized perfectly, which took hours of time and attention to details. Â

However, I cannot find the folder where the receipts are being printed to. Does anyone know the location of this standard folder in Snow Leopard?

When buying HD TV shows off iTunes does it download the SD as well? And if so does it charge you more than $60? I just bought the HD version of Chuck Season 2 since I have seen Season 1 and looked at the download part in the iTunes and it has 44 to download. I noticed that is it downloading the SD as well. Is that really how it does it? I've bough Scrubs Seasons 3 & 4 before but those where just SD.
