View 12 RepliesI recently purchased a used macbook and the previous owner left a copy of Photoshop CS 4 on there for me (I don't know if that is kosher or not). But I'm planning on buying the entire Creative Suite by next year, but it is a perk for me to have access to Photoshop for the time being.
I'm paranoid about losing access to Photoshop though, so I never update it with the Adobe updater for fear of it asking me for the serial # or it sensing a different IP or whatever it could do. But last night I allowed it to update the updater. Everything works fine still. I just allowed it to update itself, the actual updater program.
So i have a few questions:
1. Can people legitimately sell a mac with third party software still on the machine, such as Adobe Photoshop in my case?
2. When I allowed Adobe Updater udate itself from 6 version 6 to 6.0.2, did it talk to Adobe at all with regards to Photoshop, or is that too far of a stretch?
3. If I allowed the Updater to update Photoshop, would it check the serial # or anything at that point, or was the initial installation all there is to liscensing?
I'm asking this out of curiosity and because if I am in flagrant violation, I'd rather not be using the program. I'm paranoid about this type of thing too.
I recently installed and then removed "Picasa Web Uploader". Along with that application came "Google Updater". I removed Google Updater from my applications list, and removed the /Users/mbeason/Library/Application Support/Google directory. Unfortnately, I still see a "Google Updater Helper" process in the process list when running activity monitor. I've done some research on Google. They indicate that you should be able to uninstall Google Updater from within the tool itself. However, I did not find this to be the case. I re-installed Picasa Web Uploader to get Google Updater and it provided no option to un-install itself. How do I squash this program once and for all?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI see that this has been asked a few times (albeit a long time ago), but there's never really been a definitive answer.I have just switched to Mac and I used to use a program called iTLU on the PC which would automatically update my iTunes library (remove tracks that have been deleted from the hard drive and add tracks that are new).

How I can fix this problem w/o moving them back to Applications? As far as I understand this is a problem with path but I cannot find anything regarding applications path.

View 1 Replies View Relatedas an extension to my question regarding RAM utilization, I've decided to upgrade my RAM. I went through the process of removing the underside of my MBP. After taking the screws out and mentally marking which slot they came out of (some are of different size), I pulled the lid up at the black trim area (the "neck" of the display mount) as this was the easiest way to get a non-damaging grip on the metal underside -- read: I avoided using a screw driver on the lid. As I started to lift, I was surprised at the amount of force I needed to use in order to remove the lid; something near the center of the cover was still holding the lid to the underside of the body. In fact, the amount of force I needed to use made me pause to question if I missed an important step other than simply removing the screws. I decided to "go for it" and applied more pressure while pulling the lid up and away from the body and heard a "pop" noise.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just used my time machine to migrate my old macbook's contents to my brand new macbook air. While I was watching it restore 803,678 files to the new machine, I was wondering how many of them are unused applications. I've stupidly never set up separate user accounts before this, and I'm sure there are any number of applications that were placed on my old machine by my kids, my husband, and various visitors to our house. Since I'm using time machine instead of starting fresh, I know those have been transferred to the new machine. I've never worried too much about this situation before now, as about every three years I've bought a new machine, migrated the files I need to the new machine, wiped the old one clean, and handed it down to one or the other of my kids.
But now I'm realizing that with time machine, everything on my computer is now forever...everything anyone has ever put on it has been transferred to time machine and now to my new machine. I don't want to be operating with years-old versions of kid's games and apps on every machine I set up from now on for the rest of my life. Is there anything out there that specifically looks for stuff that hasn't been used for a specified number of years and asks something like, "Barney & Friends was installed 1/16/2003 and was last used 10/18/2005. Delete Barney & Friends and all associated files, yes or no?"
I want to completely remove final cut studio from my machine before I install Logic Studio. I used App Cleaner and then emptied the trash.
But still, when i put in the Logic install disc, it says it detects an install of Final Cut Studio 2 or older.......
And in software update it still has updates for final cut. But with the application being removed it shouldn't try to upgrade it right?
What else do I need to do to get everything off my machine?

I shall explain my problem.
Um, a few weeks ago[2 wks to be exact], i went overseas. Upon coming back, I on-ed my imac and found something very weird. There were icons at the bottom of my screen appearing to be a '?'. At that point of time I didn't know how to make em appear normal, thus i moved em to the thrash. I tried to open it earlier when it was a "?" but it wun open. However, what I didn't know and which was a careless mistake, i moved my microsoft office[entourage, word, ppt, i moved em into one folder] into the thrash as it appeared to be a question mark. However, when i checked the thrash, i saw no such folder... How do i fix this?
I did like everyone else and downloaded the Mac App Store yesterday. After it was installed and my computer restarted, I noticed that some of my apps were missing (Reeder in particular). This is a legitimate app downloaded from their site and now it is gone with no official Mac App in the App Store (even though their is one in the iOS store). Should I be worried about the Mac store removing other apps I have installed? If I have a "borrowed" version of say MS Office, will the Mac App Store detect and remove it once office becomes available in the App Store?
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo I know about the actual menu item in iTunes, but I'd like to know if there was a way to only remove true duplicates, not the same song on a different album. Like I there is one song from a particular artist that is on 3 different albums, is there any way to have all three songs read from only one file in the HDD? That way, the song would be a part of every album, but it wouldn't take up my HDD space. I could probably do this manually by deleting those other two files, and then "locating" them when iTunes can't find it, but this would take forever. So is there any app that does such a thing? Or am I dreaming?

Having read other posts I've now tried trashing the following folders:
USERNAME/Library/Application Support/iCal/
and
USERNAME/Library/Caches/Metadata/iCal/
and
USERNAME/Library/Caches/Metadata/com.apple.iCal/
I'm using MacOS 10.4.11
After deleting the above folders and reopening iCal I'm presented with just two calendars ("Home" and "Work") but after around 10 seconds all my old calendars pop up again!

I've tried to use boot camp to install win xp after I removed it from Vmware, but there was a warning in boot camp when I tried to make a 20G partition for xp, it recommended me to rebuild a partition(means restore the OS), and that is the hell thing I would never try because I just restored it days ago! It reminds me of iDefrag, I decide to try it on my HD to see if it can help or not. I need CDmaker to create a bootable cd so I can run iDefrag without mounting HD, but there is a problem when I create it: Coriolis CDmaker failed to create a template from that installation media, try again or use an alternative source.
I've tried:
1) Mount Mac OS X Install disk 1 DVD; ----- Failed!!
2) Using Disk Utility in the Utilities folder to create a new image of the Mac OS X Install DVD. Change the Image format option from "compressed" to "read/write" [URL] Failed!
My last option is using time machine to backup OS and move it to a new portable disk.

Back when I got Safari 3 I remember there was a terminal command to disable the blue loading bar and enable the "Loading" in Safari. Will that work again in Safari 5? Also, is there a way to disable that auto fill? For example when I type ama. It auto completes to amazon.com/cgi-xxx rather than defaulting to just amazon.com which Safari 4 did, super annoying. For example. I frequent buy.com. So the new Safari remembers what buy.com sites I go to, so when I start typing buy. It then goes to [URL] before buy.com because that's the last site I visited. Why the hell would they do this in the new version, it's awful.
View 24 Replies View RelatedI installed Google Picasa far Mac on a 10.5.6 leopard machine. Today, a window told me that I should update my version of Picasa, but Picasa was not running. The updater was well hidden. In fact, there is no google updater in my StartupItems. Furthermore, there is no goo* process among the running processes. The only upd* process is "update", whose function I ignore. Does anyone know which one is the Google Updater process? At Google they forgot to add "sudo" and User Authentication in the updater. The updater fails also when launched with Administrator privileges. That's funny, the mighty Google offering us such pearls of Mac programming.
