I'm running an 8-core 3.2GHz Mac Pro and I'm wondering why Quicktime Pro is only using 30% to 40% of my system's overall CPU power (when I encode video).
Is this just the maximum speed of QT? Is there any way to increase the CPU usage?
I'm using a B&W Power Mac G3 with 512MB RAM and OS X Tiger for a SMB file server (with 5 users) and a USB printer server. Everything is working good, but I have a problem.
It doesn't have a monitor or keyboard/mouse attached normally (I can configure it via VNC). The problem is that I would like to be able to turn the machine off when it's not needed (like at night sometimes, days when I won't be home, etc.). I would like to just hit the power button and have it turn off, however it puts it to sleep instead.
Normally, sleep would be fine, except on the B&W, the fans still run, just the HDs shut off, so it's still noisy as heck.
Is there a way to make the power button shut it off? If not, any other easy methods of shutting it off you can think of? Via VNC won't cut it, as my dad needs to be able to turn it on (not a problem) or off as well.
When i download a vindeo into quick time it makes the file bigger when i want to be making it smaller! How do i change this?

i got me a built up powermac g5 with a 1.6 ghz processor. i got it on the cheap, so i took it and built it up as far as i could afford (4 gb ram and a 500gb hd). lately ive been noticing that NOTHING is compatible with the powerpc processor. im looking at new motherboards to put in it, but im not sure where to start? i was thinking about the Intel DX58SO then putting a dual core intel 3.16 processor into it. can anyone tell me if theyve done this and its worked for them? id love an intel power mac
View 17 Replies View RelatedI have an early 05 PowerMac Dual 2.3 machine that's making some intermittent clicking noises over the last few months. There's no pattern - sometimes it happens every few minutes, sometimes it won't happen for hours. The clicking sound is loud - and is accompanied by, what I can only describe as, a bit of a buzz sound. At first I thought it could be my HDD or superdrive, but I think the click is way too loud. Now the question - is this my power supply getting ready to give? The machine does not fall in the range of the power supply repair program. I'm already in the process of adding a second HDD to clone my main drive just in case.

This is in reference to a Mac Pro 3,1 8-core purchased around Feb 2008.
Lately, I've noticed a strange noise coming from my power supply that sounds like the noise a refrigerator radiator makes. It's a humming noise that rapidly comes and goes, constantly.
The power supply fan speed was running at 599rpm yesterday, but is running at 629rpm today.
I'm not sure if the problem could've been caused by adding additional ram (12GB, OWC) or an additional HDD (3rd HDD, WD), but I didn't really notice the noise until after adding these components.
What could be the cause of this problem? What are my repair options if necessary (without Apple Care)?
I was out of town so this description was second hand but the computer has been running a little weird for a while. When I have too many apps open or on a website that has a lot going on...the computer starts revving up until I quit out of everything and let it slow down. I guess while I was gone, this happened but nobody quit out the apps and it eventually turned the screen black. When I tried restarting it sounds like the computer is working but the screen is black so I can't see if it is booting up or not. I took the monitor into the apple store yesterday and it started up right away for them. It's a cinema 23" I think.

I could have sworn that my G5 used to be able to play all levels of HD movies smoothly as anything sometime during normal Tiger usage.
Then one day, I noticed my G5 when on Tiger would stutter playing anything about 480.
I thought the upgrade to Leopard would fix this. But just today I upgraded to 10.5.3 on this G5 (I used the upgrade option on the install DVD to upgrade from Tiger) and it STILL won't play HD trailers 720 or 1080 smoothly.
is this supposed to be? Do I not have the minimum requirements to watch those kinds of resolutions anymore?
I know this machine is 4 years old now, but seriously? That seems crazy to me.
Does anyone else have this configuration and see similar or different behavior?

my old 2x2Ghz PM G5 (late2004) doesn't launch the boot sequence:
- when pushing power button, the blue led turn ON as long as I keep it pushed. If not pushed, it light off but yet the fan are running.
- no chime
- the fans turn on normally and the hard drive start a little to make noise once powered up.
- no video on display, the screen is black.
- the keyboard is not recognized anywhere I plug it.
- after a minute or two of non activity, the fans start to blow full speed (guess its a security measure for saving processor)
I ve done the reset of PMU several time (unplug the power cord then push the button at bottom of mother board)As i dont have access to keyboard, I can't start on Target mode to check if the HD is failing all.I ve removed all RAM extensions and left only one pair in slot 1 (J0), and changed the pair to avoid a faulty RAM.I only have a redlight on motherboard if I don t put back the glass panel.I ve check the voltage of the lithium battery, and yet its the original, the voltmeter says its 3,6V...
Since about the 3rd day after I got my macbook pro the computer has been making cracking sounds when I open it. When it first started it just simply made one clicking sound when the hinge is halfway open. Now however, When it is open it makes cracking sounds that don't stop ( open 15 cracking sounds per open). Is this a serious issue that I need to address with my local (and very mean) genius or is this issue not going to continue to get progressively worse. If this does continue to get worse will the hinge crack open? what is this worst that could happen?
View 11 Replies View Relatedlast night I was using my computer just chatting with people, then all of the sudden it shuts off. Now it won't boot past the apple grey loading screen, and the fans slowly rev up till they are full boar, and I have to shut it off for them to stop. I've reset the PRAM, the SMU/PMU, tried holding alt and selecting my drive to boot to. None of these did anything, and didn't help at all.
I've heard it's a processer or logic board failure, or a HD failure, or something else. I'm ready to buy a new computer, I'm actually kind of sick of this one, I just want to know if I can fix it or not. I will probably take it to the apple store just to make sure, but maybe I can get an answer on here to know how to fix it or just to know that it's dead.

I'm looking for an app that will let me design covers for DVD cases. Nothing super fancy, but one that will generate high-dpi results and let me create reusable templates. Most importantly, something that won't lock me into a "Wizard" mode. I've tried a few of these programs on the Windows side, and find that they're usually so constricting that your covers look generic, or they require you to be an Adobe Illustrator expert just to get anything done. I'd love to find something in between, and made for Mac.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have loads of AVI files taken with our stillshot camera, and loads with our Panasonic semi professional 3 chip whatever they are called video camera.
It seems, or seemed perhaps that AVI's can't be loaded or edited in iMovie(I am also not interested in using quicktime etc, I want to try and stick with iMovie)
Can you import the AVI files as well as the "real" format clips into iMovie and then edit all together to make your home movie?
I've been using Office forever but just decided to try iWork, and it turns out I love it 100x more than Office. I'm totally going to buy it when my trial expires. Before I do, one quick question that seems kind of obvious, even though I can't find the answer anywhere - is there any way to make iWork applications the default over Office?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI need to make a very, very simple line graph. In column A, I have a list of years. In column B, I have the data....numbers that correspond to something in that year. Simple, right? It really couldn't be any less complex. I selected both columns, then I went to create a new line graph, and it created a graph that had the years (from 0-2500 even though the actual range is 1973-2005) on the Y axis, and the data on the X axis. And each column of data was its own series, so I had 2 lines, which, due to the scales, was basically 2 horizontal lines. I removed the extra series (the year series), and was able to get the line to look right. It also put the column B data on the Y axis like I want, but on the X axis, it just counts from 1-33. But I want the years on the X axis. How the hell do I do this? I'm 99% positive Excel 2004 let you set the X axis labels.....did they really remove it in 2008? This seems like something that should be so simple, I shouldn't have to post on a forum to figure out
View 24 Replies View RelatedIt might be just a minor problem, but Mail stopped making sounds. No new mail sound, no reassuring jetplane sound when a mail is sent, no blip when there's nothing going on. I've checked the preferences, and they should still be turned on.
Also, I've got the impression something hapened to either my keychain or my cookies in Safari, since I had to login to a bunch of forums and other sites that I can normally just check. Firefox doesn't seem to have this problem, but I prefer Safari as my primary internet browser.
i'm doing an assignment for my degree and i've drew up a table and a description of how someone partaking in a study of mine should fill in the table.
I need to duplicate this page 11 times so that I can have an individual fill the stuff in and I can print them all out.
I can't find out how to do this as the tabs involving thumbnails of the pages only allow me to copy all of that pages and not just the graph one.
I'm trying to make some DVDs using iDVD. I want to play The Dark Knight and Benders Big Game at other locations. Anyways, I'm trying to make separate discs, not one disc for both movies. When I try to drag the file to iDVD, it says that the file is too big and to play with encoder settings. The encoder settings are already at best performance. In Finder, the file is 808MB, yet iDVD claims it is 8.08GB. I know for a fact that the file is 808mb, not 8.08GB. The file was .avi, so I converted it to .divx, and this still didn't fix it. I also tried the other movie which is .mp4, and I had the same problem.
View 6 Replies View RelatedOk so I am making a presentation using Keynote '09. I have one slide that has a huge table of different appliances and their cost. Here is what I would like to do: the first row is entitled "refrigerator". I would like there to be one slide that just has the table title and this first row. Then I would like to show the next slide, which has pictures and descriptions of the specific refrigerator on it. Then, the next slide would be the table again, except this time another row would appear, in this case entitled "heating", then I could show the next slide which has info about the heating system, etc., etc. I have used Magic Move (and love it btw), but that can only be used on the slide right after the target slide, so that would not work for this since they have a slide in between them. I have no idea if this is possible, and maybe the only way to do this is to make a different slide every time, but if there is an easy way to do this that would be awesome!!
