Applications :: How To Transfer My Library From Old Mac
Jun 1, 2009
I want to make sure I'm doing it right so I dont loose my library!
I've got a new mac and I want to transfer my library from my old mac. Is it just a case of copying the iTunes music folder onto an external drive and then pasting them into the new mac?

My cousin is trying to move her library from her desktop PC to her laptop PC. She used the itunes backup tool to transfer her library. She authorized her laptop to play her itunes store music and videos, but if she tries to play one of those protected files on the laptop it says she is not authorized to play it.

I just got a new MacBook Pro 15" and I love it. I just have a quick question, though--how do I go about transferring my itunes stuff from my old Mac laptop to my new one? I tried consolidating the library, and then dragging the iTunes file to the new computer (and then going into preferences and selecting the iTunes Media folder location), but that didn't work.

I use a Mac Mini with itunes and have all my music uploaded in the AIFF Encoder format. I have over 1TB of music.
I want to purchase another HD and copy my music onto that drive for use with my PC.
I think I would have to format that drive using "FAT32". Right?
What's the best way to copy my music over to that drive?
PC is Windows 7.

So a few weeks ago I bought an external hard drive to put all my music (from multiple computers) on, with the plan of making it my itunes library that I would then only access from my macbook pro. Everything was working great. I got all the songs onto my macbook pro, and then began consolidating my library to the external hard drive. My plan was then to go into my macbook pro after everything had been transferred over to the external hard drive, and delete everything in my music folder to free up space.
Well, during the consolidation we must have had a power failure or something, because the computer shut down and thus stopped the transfer. Now, itunes is looking to my external drive for my music (some of which is there), but since the transfer stopped at some point before it was complete, there are a bunch of songs that didnt move, and therefore it can't "find". I havent deleted any of the stuff from my macbook pro music folder, so everything is still all there, but it is not looking there for my music.
I'm thinking of completely uninstalling itunes, reinstalling it, directing it to my macbook pro music folder (which in theory still has all my stuff) and then reconsolidating to the external hard drive.

I understand how to move the whole library onto an external HD, moving the media folder location on itunes preferences etc, but say i wanted to move the library (which is about 60 gigs) to my external HD but keep about 10 gigs on my internal drive? How do I do this, assuming the amount i want to keep is too large to manually drag and drop each song/album fro my external drive onto my internal one.
Also my itunes says my library is about 52 gigs, but in finder it says my songs are about 65 gigs, why is this and how can i delete the extra gigs? I'm in Home/Music/Itunes/Itunes Music incase thats the wrong location.

I have two separate iTunes libraries, saved on an external hard drive, from two Macs that no longer work. These libraries are completely different from one another and I also still have both of their Library.xml files saved.
I want to finally bring these two iTunes libraries and upload them into my current Mac's iTunes library, however, I also want to retain the metadata (play count, ratings, etc.) from them. All the information I've come across only shows how to do so with ONE previous iTunes library and importing it into your new Mac with an empty iTunes library. Would this even be remotely possible or will I just have to bring them over as new files into my current existing library with no metadata?

I have just bought a new macbook pro and im looking to transfer my itunes libary (all movies, podcasts, songs, etc), from my old macbook air to my new macbook pro. I will be selling my macbook air, so I dont think the home sharing would work - however, Im not too sure how this works - if the home share is initially done, does it then save all the data to the new computer ?
1) can I save the itunes library file to my time capsule then install the itunes library to my new MBP from time capsule?
2) or can it be done between laptop to laptop? I dont want to do a full migration, as I want to start from scratch with my new MBP - there is a lot of data on my Air that i dont want.

Mac OS X (10.7.4)

A couple of years ago, I purchased my first MAC OS X 10.7.5
I transferred my iTunes library from my old PC to the new MAC. I followed instructions, but I, obviously, screwed up somewhere.
I don't remember what I did and didn't do.
All I know is that, now, half of my library is "connected", meaning the song has a name, an artist, and the album it came from connected.
The other half is not "connected" meaning once you scroll down from the top through all of the connected songs, you will see a listing of tracks/songs. All that is that is there is the track number and title of the song. For example, I can twenty five Track #8's each with a different title.
I would have to listen to the song and add the artist in myself. Once I do this, it will move the file up to the connected songs. However, I have not been able to take the time to find the album it comes from. A lot of these songs are my daughters and I have no clue where they are from.
I have not deleted or trashed anything from my files.

I have used mac all my life but still seldom know what I am doing. I just got a new macbookpro and used migration assistant to transfer everything.
Most of my files, however, did not transfer, including my iphoto library.
When responses are posted to this question, they usually read something along the lines of "copy your iphoto library to so and so and import the library or click new album." I understand all that.
What I need to know is how to get the photos from my powerbookG4 to my new computer.
