I just bought a new iomega external drive that I would like to format to be a bootable backup drive. (I'm not sure if I'll use rsync or TimeMachine yet for doing the actual backups).
Should I format it using DiskUtility or TimeMachine? Will TimeMachine create a bootable backup?
My internal 1TB hard drive on my iMac is dead and I don't have the money to replace it at the moment. I have everything backed up on an external 1TB drive using Time Machine. As a workaround for the time being,Is there any way I can install the system on the external drive and use that as the boot drive without erasing the Time Machine Backups? It seems to me I would have to have two partitions for the external drive, one for the system, and one for Time Machine. But is there any way to add a partition without erasing the existing one with Time Machine only on it? Â
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a requirement to encrypt the whole of my boot drive and my mobile Time Machine backup drive that I shall be taking with me on travels. I know I can use FileVault, which will give me an encrypted disk image but I don't like the reliability of sparse images and need the whole of the boot drive to be encrypted. I have tried Truecrypt to encrypt the TM disk, but could not get Time Machine to see it. I've been looking at the Checkpoint Full Disk Encryption product. What I'm trying to find out is if I can encrypt a USB HD with it, but seem to be going round in loops between Checkpoint and resellers.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just installed a 240GB LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbold SSD as a boot drive for my 2011 iMac (which contains only the 7,200 prm HDD). This has improved read/write speeds dramatically. I have transferred all my data and applications to the external drive in order to see the full benefit of the SSD.
However, I had not considered Time Machine. I thought it would simply be a matter of identifying the external drive and then connecting to the Time Capsule. However, the external drive is not visible in Time Machine set up and I suspect there could be a good reason: that it is not possible.
My 6-year old MBP17 just lost its logic board. It is now officially a paper weight. Can I boot-up an old Mac Mini from the Time Machine backup created from my laptop (until I purchase a new MBP) ?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running Snow Leopard on my new Macbook Pro. I've got a 1.5TB External hard drive that I'm trying to figure out how to format in HFS+ with Apple Partition Map. I can figure out how to format in HFS using Disk Utility, however it still does it in GUID format and I do not know how to do it in Apple Partition Map.
Googleing this for hours has lead with all kinds of information on how to go to GUID FROM Apple Partition Map but not the other way around. I know GUID is the new hottness.. but this drive will be used exclusively to connect to my XBOX 360 and it supposedly only reads HFS+ when its formatted with Apple Partition Map. (I have tried it with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with GUID, and the XBOX does NOT recognize it) I do not want to use Fat 32, (I know that that is the other major option) beacuse it limits file size.
The hard drive is a 1TB Western Digital my book I bought it in January I think. I tried to format it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) when I got it but for some reason every time I try to erase the part thats named disk3s2 or partition the main one it stops a little before half way through. I don't think its the hard drives fault so I called apple about it one day and they helped a little but it didn't work. Thanks in advance if you can help me. Also a few times I waited about seven hours for it while I was at school and when I came home it didn't move.
View 8 Replies View RelatedWhen I eventually upgrade to Snow Leopard, I'd ideally like to do a fresh install (I did Tiger>Leopard as an upgrade install), but I really don't want to have to go through the hassle of reinstalling all my apps afterwards. So, would the following work as a best-of-both-worlds alternative?
1. Update my backup bootable system drive image on my external FW drive
2. Wipe the drive in my MBP and do a fresh install of SL
3. Use the Migration Assistant to automagically copy all my data and apps over from the backup drive as if I was upgrading from an old Mac to a new one
On paper at least, it looks like it ought to "just work"... but I'm wondering whether or not Migration Assistant will work between a Mac and an external drive, or does it have to be between two actual Macs?
I run a small home network with mostly Windows computers but now with my new Mac Mini included. Right now I am backing up two of the computers separately and a few not at all. I am looking into a networking backup hard drive such as a Seagate Black Armor or WD World Edition.
My question is whether I can backup all the computers on the network or if the Mac will not be backed up because of the different hard drive formats on the computers.
If the network backup drive is foratted using NTFS, will it be able to backup and restore to the Mac as necessary. Will the Mac be able to read/write to the network backup drive as necessary?
Is there any way I could install Windows 7/Vista/XP on my MacBook using Bootcamp, but install the Windows OS on an external hard drive instead of my internal drive? I hope this is making sense.

When I finished I went to restore system from back up and plugged in my external hard drive and the computer said there was no history of back up from Time Machine. This was strange because before I formated the hard drive and tried to restore the information, it recognized that there was back up information. I decided I would re-install the os and try again.

I was wondering if there was any good software out these days to backup blu-ray discs into an itunes compatible HD format. I finally started buying some blu-ray titles and want to be able to have a compact backup in itunes and view them while traveling with my MacBook. I would already be fine with a Windows solution since I use bootcamp for DVD backup anyways.

I wish I could tell you what that error says but I was trying to figure something else out so I chose the disk6s1 and formatted it to os extended but it seems like it is frozen. I am afraid if I force quit it will screw up the drive. This is the 2nd one I have tried, I returned the 1st one thinking the drive was faulty. Now I think I screwed up the drive when I formatted it in disk utility. I have installed 2 western digital internal Hard Drives into my Pro and have used 2 other external HDs both western digitals. If there was any problems with any of my HDs, I would open up Disk Utility and Erase them to be Mac OS Extended (My WD TV won't read Journaled drives).

I have erasing all data whole day (about 20 hours) and formating as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but at the end it reports an error.
Now, when I connect hard drive to my MBP it says "disk is not readable on this computer" - Initialize...

I bought a new Hitachi 1tb bare drive and have been trying to format it through Disk Utility. I have it connected to my iMac system using a Newertech USB 2.0 drive connector.The new drive appears in Disk Utility, and when I go through the "Erase" tab and set if up as Journaled - the system seems to go into formatting mode for about ten minutes and then I get an error and I have to Force Quit the Disk Utility.

I have an external drive that will need to be connected at different times to both my Mac (Leopard) and my Windows XP & Vista machines. I had it formatted for Mac OS (Journaled) but it wasn't readable in XP or Windows. So what is the best format so that all can read/write to it normally? NTFS? I can format the drive as FAT32 with no issue, and I can format the drive as FAT32 with 1 NTFS partition with no issue. But any time I try to format the partition as Mac OS Extended or Mac OS Extended Journaled it reports an underlying error and stops. I can't figure it out. I don't know what the problem is or what to look for. Does anyone have any pointers?

I am pretty good with macs, I just don't know much about time machine and external hard drives. What I want to do is either:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI wanted a larger Windows partition so I went into Boot Camp assistant and deleted the Windows partition, made a new one and proceeded to insert my Windows CD. It went through the installation process and i selected the right drive/partition to have a quick NTFS format. After the format, my MacBook restarted and stalled. Needless to say, Boot Camp ran a quick NTFS format on the entire drive.
Now, is there any way to recover any of the files that were quickly formatted? Is there any good software out there that may be able to recover anything?
