Applications :: FileMaker Pro Versus Bento

View 2 RepliesI run a small architecture firm and I'm in need of a database program to track projects, clients, and employees.
I'd like the ability to create project reports that illustrate how much time and money is spent on all aspects of a project (predesign, site analysis, schematic, etc.), reimbursables, direct expenses, etc.
I'd also like to break that down further to what individual employees have worked on. On individual projects as well as all projects worked on.
Is this something that can be done in Bento or is Filemaker needed? Some have recommended Access but I would prefer to stay on the Mac side for this information.
I've been considering purchasing Bento 2 and was wondering if anyone on Macrumors has experience with the app. I'm going to try the trial version but interested to see what other forum members think of the app.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am a documentary filmmaker who is using Bento to create a database for all of our archived photos, documents, etc. I would like to share this information with the other members of my team who also have Bento. The problem is when I try to export my library collection, containing all of the photos and documents, those on the receiving end are not getting the data.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been using MS Access for years on PC to keep track of about 500 names between a couple different groups. And then started using on my macbook with Parallels. But I would prefer using a mac native app for this. So I'm wondering if Bento would be a good choice and if so, how I can transfer the MS Access data to Bento?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI switched to Bento from Filemaker a fews back because my primary use is rather simple - a pilot logbook. All has been fine until recently. The tabbing order of my fields has somehow changed as I do data input.
Filemaker had a command to Change Tab Order so a user could jump to fields in a desired order. So far I have found no Bento equivalent.
I'd like to use Bento and the iPhone Bento app to help me to keep track of my music and dvd collections so that I don't end up buying cd's over again that I already own.
The iTunes database is an XML file and so far I haven't had much luck importing it into Bento. Is there another way to get where I want to go? When I was beta testing Bento a few years ago I kept telling their people that having a one or two step import of iTunes information would be a very good idea. Well, they didn't apparently think so as it's now at rev 3 and no iTunes import that I've been able to find.
Also neither Excel or Numbers will touch the XML file, even after heavy editing.
Anyone done this with Bento? Is there an easier way?
I have been given the opportunity at work to use Filemaker 10 if I want to... but I can't for the life of think why I would. I'm a graphic/web designer. Could I tie it in with a back-end database for websites? Should I use it to manage clients? I've read reviews and looked at the website, but they all focus on the improvements from the last version rather than what it should/can actually be used for!
View 5 Replies View Relatedi work for a small digital printing company and we are looking for a way to incoroporate the use of a schedule like app that would let us manipulate job tickets in a calendar app like ical with filemaker pro 10.
thought explained:
1. within filemaker pro 10 we would create a job ticket with all the needed information (name of print file, quantity, size, due date etc.)
2. within this job ticket we would estimate how much time it would take to complete the project (ex. 1 hour.)
3. then automatigically a 1hour reserved time slot would be taken in ical on the desired day.
4. our production manager would then move around the reserved time slots at will to complete the jobs for the due dates.
IS THIS POSSIBLE TO ACCOMPLISH?
if so, does anyone know of a file maker plugin or any other app that can do this?
What is the easiest way to 1) show the current record number and 2) show how many records are in the current found set? This is the same info that is in the Status Toolbar. I want to hide this tool bar but the user still needs to know this info.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been using Filemaker for years, but I've never had a need for anything too complicated - until now. I am in the midst of designing a vote database. I am hoping to find a way to have a choice made from a drop down menu that would define the text fields. I need this to be accurate as possible.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've heard Office:Mac isn't that great, and doesn't make up for what iWork 09 is missing. So I'm wondering what people think about it and why does it get such a bland reputation? Also, do people use a combination of the above? Such as iWork and Office:Windows? Both Offices? I do mainly word processing, some soft Excel work (no hardcore giant spreadsheets...yet), and general PowerPoints for presentations. I have access to cheap iWork/Offices (school discount) and a family pack of the top-level edition of Office:PC (family) so it isn't a big deal to get any of the above.
Lastly, what's the difference between Camino and Firefox? I use Firefox currently and love it, mainly due to the add-ons (weather at the bottom, Gmail alert, skins, page views, other customizations). Tabs seem to be on all browsers these days, so are there any other key differences?
I'm looking for a new monitor to go with my MBP, and I'm stuck trying to choose between the ones listed above.
The 2407WFP is a couple of years old now I guess, but it's the rev A04 version, which supposedly fixed the (few) problems with what was otherwise meant to be a great screen. It's an sPVA screen.
I've heard good reviews of the G2410, with its LED backlighting. It's still a TN panel and I hear so much bad stuff about them.
The 2209WA is an eIPS panel which I like the sound of, but it's smaller and lower resolution.
The F2380 is a cPVA panel, the image quality looks better but I've heard bad things about blacks on this panel.
After installation of licensed version of filemaker pro 9.0 when I start I get a message relaunch, ignore, or send report to apple. I sent report multiple times to apple without response. Trial version of filemaker pro 10 does work.

My iMac OS 10.6.4 recently had a drive failure and I had to re-install my apps. Since then I cannot print from my Filemaker files (ver. 8.5 and 9.0). The print dialog window appears but the normal looking Print button does nothing. To print I have to click the Preview button which works fine, and then print from Preview. Most of my printing is done through scriptsall of which fail to print at that point, but I've tried printing a single record using the Menu command and have the same hang up. I re-installed from the CD but it did not fix the problem.

Intel iMac running Snow Leopard, 10.6.8. Craziest thing I ever did see!
I need to have the built in camera of an IMac take a photograph and insert it into a field in Filemaker Pro without user interaction. It would hopefully be used for staff attendance, and track who is changing records. I have no experience with applescript, but I think it might be the way to get the task done.

I have an important database created on my Mac using an old version of Filemaker II. (Version 1.1v2 1989) Since I have gone to OSX, the old program will not work on my newer Intel Mac. I am trying to find out how to convert the old files to a newer version of FileMaker that will allow me to read and add to the file.
I have a version 6.0 and 9.0 of Filemaker Pro, but neither will allow me to read the old database. Might have to step up from version to version and convert. We are at wits end and desperately need some expert help! Can anyone tell me how to do this. Files are a listing of 20+ years of articles and photos connected with a small magazine my wife and I publish.
Filemaker 6 is crashing on my MacBook Pro when I try to select a user dictionary. I tried deleting preference files. Then I reinstalled Filemaker from the original installlation disk.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm pretty satisfied with the Marware cover, although it can be a little frustrating when typing quickly..I'm wondering if I should go back, return the Marware cover and pick up the iSkin.
So, for those of you that have any of these in comparing..which do you think is the best?
And yes, I did search and am aware threads like this exist..but I couldn't find any comparing all three, only iSkin vs. Moshi.
I'm trying to decide which product to buy and I was hoping for some advice.
First and foremost I want a device so that I may transfer my VHS tapes to DVD.
Live TV recording is secondary but for the price, I'd like to find the device that suits me best so I can continue to use it after i've transferred all my VHS.
Here are my concerns:
1) I'm going to be moving from the US to Ireland in a couple of months (not sure for how long, could be years+) Obviously there's the whole NTSC vs. PAL, ATSC vs. DVB.
I know with EyeTV 250 it's either or, any ideas if buying some sort of converter is an option (prices, quality)? If I bought just a PAL one, would I still be able to convert VHS or would it be completely unusable in the US?
2) I'd like some sort of HD/Digital abilities. From what I can tell TVMax is analog only and Blackmagic may also be but I can't find more specs on that.
Does this mean they'll be useless once the US undergoes the conversion?
So as of now I'm leaning towards EyeTV 250 but the question are there any forseeable problems with using a PAL to NTSC converter or using a PAL EyeTV in the US just to convert VHS.
So I have a 1.8ghz dual G5 with 3gb of ram for work. I mainly work in Adobe CS and do a far amount of Photoshop work. At any given time I may have all of Adobe CS plus Office and a few other apps running -- and a gazillion fonts. Went to the store and saw the new 24" iMac. How would a new iMac compare to my late '04 1.8DP G5? On that same note, how would a new MacBook Pro compare to the above?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am planning on purchasing a new display for use (currently) with my imac. I am completely torn between these two models, and cannot make a decision. Any thoughts? I like the Dell because it is LED backlit, thus good blacks and little to no backlight bleed. But I like the Samsung because of the (supposedly better panel and (supposedly) better color reproduction. I like the simplistic look of both of them (though they could look a little better ) so I'm not sure which one to buy.

How to export Address Book to FileMaker Pro so mailing labels can be printed.
FileMaker Pro does a better job at a miniature address book.

I ran some tests on my 2009 Quad Nehalem to try and determine what was up with the triple Vs dual memory "brouhaha".
I posted the results as a new thread because I think it will be useful information for a lot of quad owners, but it was originally going to be a reply to this thread: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=735845
Here we go. Tesselator suggested 3 tests that could show the differences in speed between triple and dual channel bandwidth.
Quote:
As one idea I would maybe try creating a few very large images (16-bit, blank white, blank black, gradient fill) and then duplicating and deleting that layer repeatedly a few hundred times.
So I did them, 10 times each. I could have gone on, but the results were very very stable after the first 2 attempts.
Set-up: a 40Mpx, 16bit image (8000*5000). First test it was simply filled white; second test: black; and third test a black to white gradient. I added a fourth test, using a real (photo) 12Mpx RAW image from my Nikon D300.
I created (took a while!) an action with 350 repetitions of "duplicate layer" and "delete layer", followed by a red fill to let me know the action was done. The same action was used in all four tests.
The computer was restarted before each of the four tests, which may explain the irregularities on the first 1-2 attempts. Nothing else but PS4 was launched.
The results are interesting:
We can clearly see that the simple white and black fills show a speed difference of around 10%.
We can also clearly see that this difference disappears when a more complex image is used. The use of more complex images represents a much more realistical use of PS.
To make things even more realistic, I also tested RetouchActions's speed test on my own 12Mpx image. I use nearly all of the operations of that action on a daily basis, so it's a lot more representative of the work I do on PS.
Here are the results:
The results are clear: 11% increase in performance using 8GB of ram (Vs 6GB) when working on a 12Mpx image.
Added info: number of page-outs after running the 10 test series (after about 45 minutes of intense PS work):
-17K when using 6GB (1.7K page-out avg).
-10K when using 8GB (1K page-out avg).
For me the results are definitive: unless I plan on working only with full black or full white images (not even black and white!), having 8GB is better, even when working on smallish 12Mpx files. I imagine the differences would have been even greater using bigger file sizes of actual complex images.
What would now be interesting: someone with a 2009MP Octo doing the same tests at 12GB and 16GB.
I have noticed that the ability to send an email from outside Mail via one of the several applications that has the capability has disappeared. Whenever I try to send a message I get an error message from the app. For example in Filemaker I get "Some of the files that are needed are either damaged or have not been installed. run the installer to correct this problem." In Acrobat I get "The SendMail doesn't know how to talk to your default mail client. select a different mail application to use." In MS Word the menu selection is dimmed out. From Pages however it works fine.
