Need help with free apps, that you cant download without money on your credit card, mine is a debit card, and the only time I can download fee apps is when I have money on my card, so these aren't free, so help me here, tired of trying to download free apps, also got an iTunes gift card, and what are they actually used for?

I just bought a macbook pro yesterday and conected my apple ID that I created for my iphone. I was able to input iTunes gift card and use the balance fine but today sudnly I canoot download anything even free apps and I still have 15$ in my account left from the 25$ gift card. Every time I try to install a free or non free it goes to my billing page and ask me to input a credit card, if I select non and done it gives me an error to contact suport.

Why does apple require a credit card with all the info, including my birth date, for FREE UPDATES?I find it very inconvenient when I am asked for payment info for something free. Also, my mac meets all of the applications requirements.The first app i'm having trouble with has been paid for, but as soon as I hit 'install', it shows up in the Launchpad for a few seconds, and the status bar doesn't progress.
