ITunes :: Lost Music - Get The "can't Be Located" Error
Jun 29, 2012I used the apple tutorial regarding using my ipod to transfer all of my music from my pc to my mac mini. It worked, had everything up and going. Erroneously deleted the file containing the music, so now I get the "can't be located" error. All of the music is still on my ipod, and I think it should still be on my pc. Is my best bet to redo the tutorial? Or is there a way to use what is on my ipod and put the folder back onto my mac desktop? Nothing was backed up, and trash is emptied.

Aug 6, 2010...now I don't have the same functionality with iTunes. Basically, I can't use iTunes at all anymore as the interface for my music and videos. Once the external drive is mounted, I can navigate through it and play individual songs, but I can't use iTunes to do that. All my previous Playlists show up down the left side of iTunes, but there isn't any music in them.
I downloaded 2 songs yesterday, made a Playlist out of them, and because the path in the Advanced tab of the iTunes Preferences is correct, it automatically added the songs to the external hard drive. I synced my iPod and it was completely erased except for the 2 new songs. Is there a way to use iTunes to navigate my music like I used to when I stored the information on the internal hard drive but keep the information on the external drive? I have a Mac running Snow Leopard and the latest version of iTunes.

Aug 28, 2010I have a 27" imac and mostly use it for music. I got on today to put some music on my iphone 4 and to my surprise I have like 12 songs in my itunes library. These songs are a free sampler cd download which I downloaded the other day from Austin City Limits Music Festival. Where did all my music go? Please tell me I haven't lost 35 gigs of music!! I do have an external hard drive that is supposedly used for backing up. Is it possible the music is on there, if so how do I go about getting back into my itunes?

Aug 30, 2009in prepartation for snow leopard I decided i better do a backup of my drive. I turned to trusty old super duper. i did a backup using "smart update" which in the past has left all my files on my external drive intact and copied over my main drive. however today it decided to simply erase the drive and then do a backup. It's NEVER done this before in the past, and i've now lost everything on my media drive: music, photos, movies, everything. can i recover what was lost? or am i completed effed in the a? the irony: doing a backup and in the process losing everything that counted.

Aug 21, 2009I have transferred my itunes music on to my external HD. The music is there and that is fine. I then deleted the old itunes folder from my actual HD. I have now wanted to access the music on the external HD, and have attempted to select the new music file location on the external HD via the itunes/preferences/advanced window,selected the new file path and it will just not show in itunes!

Aug 18, 2010I'm new here and about to dip my toe into the Apple pond for the first time. Just placed an order for an i Phone and am preparing my music collection to move at least some of it over to i Tunes for use with the new phone. I currently have it on an external HD in one main folder (CD Collection) and have been using WMP up to now. Stored under that main folder are sub-folders with album titles containing the individual song files in .wav format. I tried to import the files into the i Tunes library by going to FILE and clicking on ADD FOLDER TO LIBRARY. I then selected all the album folders and hit enter. It imported them all into one folder. I have around 450 albums. This is not what I had in mind. I had hoped the folder and file organization would have been maintained. Instead I have thousands of music files in one "album."

Factory refurbished model that I have been using now for about 10 days.
I got a new macbook pro. Now, I had been keeping my iTunes library on an external HD but I decided to migrate the library over to the new computers HD by hooking up the external, and using the Add To Library to import all my tunes. I have never purchased any music from the iTunes store, but I did have some free downloads from them. I went to get a free compilation from the iTunes store last night, and got this message. iTunes couldn't download your purchase. You don't have write access for your iTunes media folder or a folder within it. Change permissions (in the Finder) and then chose Store > Check for available downloads
Well, I did all this, made the permissions both Read and Write in all the folders associated with the iTunes library... and still no luck. I reset the path to the library in the iTunes preferences panel >advanced settings, and still no luck. I then decided to reauthorize the account, but got this message when I entered my iTunes password. There was an error storing your authorizations information on this computer. The required file was not found or has a permission error. Correct this permissions problem and try again, or de authorize this computer if the permissions cannot be changed.
Now, I have found tonnes of info about this (or similar) problems on the net, but no one seems to have posted a consistent fix. Proposed solutions vary from fixing the folder permissions in the Finder (which I have done 3 or 4 times now), to messing with the media library xml file, to dragging the whole library to the desk, restarting iTunes, then importing the original library back to the rebuilt iTunes folder. I imagine that if this is a DRM issue (which I suspect it is) then that last solution won't fix the problem either. Will doing an Archive and Reinstall solve the issue?
Can I just throw away all of the DRM tainted items and regain access to my iTunes library? How would I even identify which songs are even using DRM coding? I'm considering doing an Archive and Reinstall anyway, because this computer is acting a bit buggy. I'm not sure if this could be a hardware issue since this was a refurb model, but I haven't done all the hardware test from the OS disc yet, since I've been busy reinstalling software and libraries from my old computer.

Jan 15, 2008My laptop recently contracted 4 Trojan horses - yes, it was nasty. I had to have the entire thing restored, but luckily all my data was backed up before this.
Once my laptop was back to normal, I downloaded itunes and plugged in my ipod. Itunes then began automatically synching the empty itunes with my ipod - I tried to cancel it but it was too late, and the new itunes had effectively wiped my ipod of all it's content.
All my music was backed up on to data discs, so it could have been worse - however the songs which I cannot get back, are the ones I purchased off itunes, and that's quite alot.

Jan 16, 2009Attempted to create a shared folder today and almost had it working. After a discussion on here, discovered I can share libraries by using fast user switching.
Now when I load my Itunes, every song is blocked out "Unable to locate original file" when clicked on. I have tried Time Machine to no avail.
