my iMac's (fist alu) optical drive is messed up. I have also an MacBook (alu), which helped me to create a bootable snow-leopard usb-stick (got the original retail DVD).
But the stick only works with the MacBook; my iMac does not recognize the stick. Has someone an idea?
I have a Snow Leopard Install Disk for the 13-inch Macbook Pro model.I also have a 21-inch iMac. I have OS X Lion installed on both. I have Snow Leopard installed as a partition on my Macbook Pro, which I installed via the install disk. I want to do the same thing for my iMac but I am unable due to (seemingly) my install disk is for a Macbook Pro and not for an iMac.

Even when they are directly connected with ethernet cable, I can see the imac but not connect with it. I can connect to the macbook from the imac, but not vice-versa. My network is ethernet through linksys WRT610 router. Repeated attempts to connect from the macbook result in "connection failed" message and "imac may not exist or is not available."

I was thinking about giving him the upgrade to SL for his birthday (he's running 10.5.8 if I remember correctly). I would give him the full version of course, just in case. But will it work? Or would I be better off just giving him RAM sticks? If so, what DDR2 RAM does that iMac use, and how much can it take?

I have just upgraded to Snow Leopard and one of the questions I'm struggling to find an answer to, is just how much RAM can I put in my iMac? I'm running a 3.06GHz core 2 duo iMac, 2008 (last model, without the new fancy graphics card). And, it currently runs 4Gb of RAM. With all of the Snow Leopard talk of your system running a virtually infinite amount of RAM, how much can I run???
Am I limited in some way by the motherboard in my iMac? Or can I "fill my boots!!"?

View 6 Replies View RelatedWhile using Mail, I got a message that there was an error with Mail and I needed to quit and reboot. When I re-opened mail, it prompted me to set it up and while it was reading the files, it froze. Subsequently, my Imac (OS 10.6.3? Snow Leopard) became frozen, i.e. my whole computer. I shut down using the back button (nothing else worked) and then restarted. I then re-booted using the regular re-start system. I was able to do 2-3 functions (the computer was super slow) and it froze again. After 2-3 repeats of the same procedure, it freezes after being turned off and on using the back button. I updated my software about 3 days ago. There was a major security update in that update. I'm waiting for a professional techy to call me back, but if you have any suggestions on how I should proceed, I'd be most grateful.

if they do release SL this year. Since SL is 64 bit OS version, will the current iMac hardware fully utilize SL? Or will it need new hardware to take advantage of the 64 bit?
View 3 Replies View RelatedIs there something about the hardware on this iMac that will not let SL run in full 64 bit glory? It loads 64 bit kernel, but did that in Leopard as well. SL loads the 64 bit kernel but not the rest of it... of course holding the 6 and 4 keys results in no joy. So now I suspect it is not just the CPU that must be a 64 bit ready chip but the rest of the hardware must be like wise optimized.

The sleep indicator light turns off, then the computer puts itself back to sleep. It also happened twice this morning. What's going on here?

My biggest problem is that my imac won't wake up and I am forced to shut it down by holding the power button, it happens about once every two days and it is quite annoying. Also (I don't know if this happened before or not) the apple symbol in the menu bar changes every two seconds, not a big deal but just weird.
View 8 Replies View RelatedAfter my intel iMac froze when running Snow Leopard, I was forced to restart it, and it turned out the HD was corrupted. But after erasing it and performing repair disk, everything is now ok. But since the failure it refuses to reinstall usually giving the message "an error occured when intalling Mac OS X"
For the last few, very frustrating days, I've tried everything I have read on the net: resetting PRAM, checking the HD is set as GUID, erasing and repairing the HD numeous times, performing hardware tests. Even slaughtering farm yard animals. Basically everything. And still it won't install.
I really am at my wits end, and to make matters worse, the genius bar here in Tokyo is so busy I can't get a reservation til Friday evening.
So after purchasing a new iMac last month which came with Lion, I have decided I would like to install Snow Leopard. If it is something to do with hardware that Snow Leopard does not have drivers for, why does Apple not supply downloadable drivers?

I have 2 iMac G5's both running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.Suddenly one decided that it woud not allow Photoshop 9 (CS1) to work so I tried to reinstall. It seems to reinstall but will still not save files. Tried to reinstall Photoshop CS2, and the whole CS2 suite and the discs will not load at all. I have tested the disc in the other iMac and it's fine. I have tried all the obvious repair routes - disc utility, restarting from the system CD, creating a new user, software updates, but still cannot get any of teh Adobe sofatware to reinstall properly.
