I need to set up a self contained (installed on a flash drive, that will work on any computer) UNIX command line, that I can do SSH and FTP in. Is there an XTERM emulator for Windows?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a boat load of mp3 files that have a _ instead of a space in the file name. I figure there must be a magical command in the Unix terminal window that would rename the file based on a replacement string.
I want to replace all _ in a file name with a Space. Is there an easy way to do this? Or, maybe a free utility I can download? I'm trying to clean up my files!
Is there any way I can switch the functions of these two? I've searched and googled and checked microsoft and to no avail. But I want to copy and paste or undo and things and I press command and the start menu pops up. Not only do I not want that to happen but I'd like the command button to function as the control button.

I am so used the to CMD shortcuts, and hate having to move my finger to CTRLI downloaded a program to edit the registry, but it didn't change the command key, just the control key. I recently got a third hard drive for my Mac Pro and decided to install windows on it using Boot Camp. I formatted the drive ntfs and installed windows. After the installation was complete I inserted the leopard disk as I was instructed to do so and installed the Apple Drivers.
It seems a Realtek Audio HD driver was installed. This allows sound to come from the internal speaker, but as far as I can windows is not recognizing the line-out jack when I am in windows. (The one on the back of the Mac Pro) I can plug my speakers into the headphone jack (on the front) and they will work or I can use an external USB soundcard, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the speakers to work via the line out.
I have tried reinstalling the realtek drivers several times. All this seems to do is reinstall that darn Audio Manager which allows me to put useless "reverb" effects on. Or listen to a bee buzzing around my head. Is there anyway to get the line out to work under boot camp? Preferably a way that doesn't require me to install the Realtek Audio manager. (Which is totally useless.)
Right now I have the drivers uninstalled. Since all they did in the first place was make the internal speaker work, I'm fine without them until I can figure out how to get the line out to work. The only downside is the machine yells at me on startup that the integrated card has no driver. Are there any know drivers that support the line out? And again, if I can avoid the Audio Manager being installed as well, that would be great.
I have been a PC user for 15 years and after using my friends new macpro via remote desktop, I think I really like the workflow a lot better. I do online marketing so efficiency is most important for me. The other really important thing, and the only thing that would prevent me from getting it, would be the fact that I LOVE windows gaming. I have read on the mac site that I can install a copy of windows alongside. First, will windows 7 be able to be installed? Second, my question mainly deals with the hardware of a mac... I'm not sure how the graphics suffer when trying to run windows games on high quality on mac hardware. Can anyone with experience tell me how this would work? If what I'm about to describe will work and is kosher, then I'm going to get an absolute top of the line Mac Pro

So the "command" button becomes the windows button in bootcamp right? I want to disable that... is that possible? If you want to know the reason... its because when i play games like SC2, that button gets hits accidentally sometimes and it windows out and it bugs the game.... or is just annoying. Also, even better, can I change the "command" button to make it the "control" button instead?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am a mac newbie, but experienced linux and windows user. I am trying to restore my mac mini (mid 2011) running mavericks. The process should normally be very simple; press command-R keys while booting to start recovery mode and go from there.
Unfortunately my keyboard is a palm-sized keyboard without command or windows keys. So I am stuck. I have 2 windows laptops that I can use to remote login but I cannot do remote login during boot.
I tried mapping the Command key to Ctrl key inside OS X, but it seems like this only works after reboot.
I tried to use recovery disk assistant as it requires "Option" key, but the assistant does not allow me select the HD, as I guess I do not have a recovery system on the HD.

Trying to install a .pkg from the command line in single user mode. I'm using the command "installer -pkg Installer.pkg -target / The .pkg is on a mounted USB drive. / is also mounted. When I run the command, the screen scrolls to a new blank line and stays there but nothing happens. The light on my USB indicates no data transfer is happening. I get no output, even if I add -verbose to the command.

The installation went smoothly, and then the computer restarted. Only problem is the Windows XP system disc is still in the CD drive. Now the computer wants to boot from the CD and can't. I get a message that says, "Press any key to boot from CD. Disk error Press any key to restart", and I have no way to eject the disc. (There is no pin hole next to the CD slot that I can put a paperclip in to force it out.) I've tried restarting and then hitting Command + Option + O + F (found that advice at Apple's site). No joy. A good friend who has used Macs professionally for years has asked me to send him a big stack of HTML documents and my instinct is to put them into a tarball, b2zip it, and send him that. I asked whether he could handle it and he told me to send each document separately, uncompressed. I use Linux, so I know you folks have an excellent OS that is BSD-based and can handle lots of bash commands I use. Accordingly I want to tell my friend how to do it all in one easy step from the CLI. He has no idea what I'm talking about, does not know how to get to the CLI, and did not even know Macs have them until I mentioned it to him.
So could you kindly provide my friend with a no-assumptions, comprehensive, clear list of beginner's instructions that will tell him exactly what to do to? He needs to:
1. Get into the CLI
2. Locate the tarball he downloaded from Gmail
3. Unzip it and open it
4. Get out of the CLI and back into the GUI.
I would deal with the tarball this way: $ tar xjvf ./texts.tar.bz2. Could he use that command? I don't have any idea how to leave the graphic world on a Mac. My view is that fulfilling his request will be difficult and a lot of work for him as well if I don't use a tarball, and he needs to learn something about the OS he's using. I'll be interested to see how Mac users do it, as well. Yes, I expect the job can be done in the GUI on a Mac, but as I say, I would like to expand his universe (and mine) just a bit. Dragging him out of the GUI won't hurt him, and the learning experience could give him a bit more respect for the power and flexibility of the OS he uses daily.
