Windows On Mac :: How Decent Are Microsoft About Transferring OEM Licenses
Oct 11, 2009
I'm looking to transfer my Vista license from my PC to my Macbook when Windows 7 is released, as 7 will be installed on the PC. The problem is that it's an OEM license. Are Microsoft strict about the transfer of licenses or is it possible to ask the person on the phone to reactivate it on another computer?

I have a Windows 98 laptop where I have a large amount of files (pictures, documents, etc.) that I have saved. I am wondering how I can transfer all of those files to my Mac OS X. The Windows 98 is not connected to the internet, so I am unable to do it that way (or it would require a considerable amount of time to e-mail files back to myself, much more time that I am willing to spend at this time) and I tried using a 3.5" floppy disks to transfer files to a Windows 98 computer that was connected to the internet, but the laptop could not read the disks. Additionally, the Windows 98 does not have an ethernet adapter but it does have a UBS connection.

I find it very easy to transfer data between my imac and macbook. However I have a dell laptop that i use for surfing the web if my macs are doing something. I'd like to be able to transfer data between the two. I am able to pull files from my dell because it shows up in my "shared" area. Is there a way to find my mac on my windows laptop? I don't really use windows so I am unsure how to do this?

Just upgraded my XP Partition to Windows 7 Home today and I am really impressed. I was wondering if there is an easy way to export my address book in OS X and import it into Windows 7? I found a contacts folder in Windows 7, but I'd hate to manually save all 250+ of the V cards from my OS X address book.

I am planning on getting a Mac in a few weeks time as I am going to sell my old windows 7 PC and then install Windows 7 again on my mac via bootcamp. Obviously when i get my mac i can easily transfer all my files onto it but I would loose all my programs. My question is if I was to create an image file of the hard drive on my windows PC could i then use that and Restore it on my Mac, obviously in a separate partition? I have already found a program that i believe will be able to restore my Windows image file in that separate partition, which is winclone:
[URL]
I just wanted to know if my theory would actually work. Should I have any problems? I will also be using Macrium Reflect to make the image file: [URL] Also I am planning to get a macbook pro 13"

I have a friend who plans to put an HP Mediasmart server in his house to automatically backup his MacBook and PowerBook as well as centralize his pictures and songs. He currently has the two notebooks mentioned above, 2 iPhones, and 4 or 5 iPods.
Once all of the local libraries are emptied out onto the server I'm a little stuck for what to do. I know iTunes 9.0 will stream music to all of the devices in the house. But when he leaves the house with one of his devices he's got to take the music or pictures with him.
This presents me with a few concerns:
1. Is there a way to reset the license on each song downloaded from iTunes - kinda starting fresh - so that he can sync his music with any one of his devices without getting an error about the file not being licensed to use on a particular device?
2. Building off the question above - is there a way to legitimately remove the license restriction so he (and his family) can all have the same copy of a song on their personal device without having to fuss with the license restriction?
3. When they are going on vacation (for example) and they want to take music and pictures with them on one of the notebooks how do they do it?
4. On that same vacation when they take a bunch of pictures and download music while they're out how do they get the music or pictures off the notebook and onto the server where the master library is going to be?
5. Should iTunes and iPhoto be "pointed" to a "Photos" or "Music" folder on the server, is that the best way to centralize all of the music and photos?

I always use iPhoto to upload my pictures from my devices, Ive noticed that all the photos are stored under a single fumnail in photos.
If I wanted to transfer these photos to windows how would I separate all the pictures into the format windows views them in, so individual files. Also if i wanted to transfer to another mac do I just move the fumnail?
Also how do I go about transferring music?

I'm trying to be able to access my Windows HD (loaded with Win7) from when I'm booted in Mac. I can move files from my Windows HD partition and drag them into any folder on my mac, but I can't do the reverse. I'd love to be able to drag a powerpoint from a folder on my mac but it won't let me drag it to a windows folder (some of which have little lock icons on them) and says access denied. I thought I made sure I have read/write access so I don't really know what is wrong. I'm aware I can't access my mac partition from when I'm booted into WIndows but I'd be really appreciative if someone would let me know how to drag files to and from the windows partition while I'm booted into mac.

I am going to be getting the new iMac 27" Quad when it becomes available and I was curious as to whether or not I could migrate my Windows Vista OEM partition. I would hate to have to keep buying another copy of Windows every year everytime I upgrade my computer. Also, I would like to migrate my pro apps that I own such as Logic, FCE, Aperture without having to reinstall them, as Logic, for instance is HUGE! When I look at the Logic apps GET INFO for instance it says that the file is only 769mb in size when in reality the program is over 40GB in size. When you migrate that type of app does it search your old computer and bring all the necessary files, in this case, jam packs, etc that make up the 40gb or so in Logic?

The main problem I'm having is keeping my Ratings and Play Count.
Setup:
Have iTunes 9 running Windows 7 on a desktop, trying to transfer to 10.6.2 Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro.
I've tried consolidating the library, then transferring my music files using an external HD. But still no luck with the ratings/playcount.
Is there a way to use my iPhone 3G to transfer the files?
In the end I do what my MacBook as my main computer, so I will want to be able to sync with my iPhone after all my files are transferred.

What's the best way to go about getting my itunes and everything in it (music, apps etc..) from a windows laptop to a new macbook? I'm afraid that I'll lose my apps and have to buy them again. I am more worried about the apps than the music since I have the music backed up on an external HD but if I try syncing my iPhone to the new mac it will wipe it out since my iTunes is empty. I also really don't want to have to go through a few thousand songs and check off which ones I want on my iPhone. I'm guessing there may be no way around this. My main concern is apps though.

Apple is offering no-fee Mini DisplayPort licenses to anyone interested in designing products around the new specification, a move the company hopes will take the fledgling display connector mainstream.
The Mini DisplayPort is a small form factor connector invented by Apple to fully support the VESA DisplayPort protocol. Unlike the Mini-DVI and Micro-DVI connectors common on previous generation Apple products, the port is capable of driving resolutions up to 2560x1600, which is commonly used on 30-inch displays.
In an update to its software licensing page spotted by ArsTechnica, Apple announced that it's not charging for Mini DisplayPort licenses, which can be obtained by filling out a Mini DisplayPort Implementation Agreement [PDF].
The Cupertino-based company notes that Mini DisplayPort is "particularly useful on systems where space is at a premium, such as portable computers or to support multiple connectors on reduced height add-in cards."
Mini DisplayPort can already be found on the latest family of MacBooks, MacBook Pros, and MacBook Airs, in addition to the new 24-inch LED Cinema Display. Apple has also said it plans to implement the connector on all of its future Mac designs.
By offering no-fee licenses, the Mac maker hopes other PC vendors will adopt MiniDisplay port and help build a market for compatible devices. The move also presents the possibility that third parties will develop some well sought-after solutions, like a Mini DispayPort to HDMI adapter for hooking MacBooks up to HDTVs and a connector that will allow older Macs to connect to the new 24-inch LED Apple Cinema Display.

I recently bought a 17-inch iMac from eBay for a sweet price, it's here now, in literraly new condition. It had Leopard on it, and I wanted to wipe it, and reinstall OSX using my Macbook Pro's Tiger Disc. Wait, isn't that illegal? No. I had Tiger on my Mac, upgraded it to Leopard. Now the Tiger disc is no longer used on the computer. Unfortunately unnoticed by me the Tiger disc was a Macbook Pro install disc. So I had recently upgraded my Macbook Pro to Snow Leopard. Now, the thing was, the Tiger disc and the Leopard upgrade disc was freed up from binding to my Macbook Pro. The iMac came, I wiped it's hard drive using the Macbook Pro Tiger Disc. Whoopsie. I tried installing Tiger on the iMac. No juice. I then learned that that tiger disc was limited to use for the Macbook Pro. So then I pulled out the Snow Leopard disc (Single License), and I 'm installing it on the iMac. This is not legal.

So Ive been using Macdrive for transfering files between HFS+ (OSX) and NTFS (Win XP), whenever Iam in bootcamp. Each time I transfer something large from win partition to my OSX partition using Macdrive (files around 6-8 GB) I often get the disc error message "You disc need repair". So I was wondering, is the problem my HD or is it the program macdrive?

I have Windows 7 installed on my mid 2007 MBP and just purchased the new MBP. I used winclone to clone the partition, and transfered it to the new partition on the new MBP.
Everything went smoothly with winclone, but windows fails to launch, it crashed on the load screen and trying to restart pops the windows error screen saying that windows failed to start due to new hardware configuration.
I tried safe mode as well as booting with the disc and selecting repair.

I've been looking everywhere for an answer to this question and I'm really stumped. I've installed Bootcamp as I've realised Fusion is no good for gaming, however. I can't download all of my games again off steam due to a cap on my internet.
I've looked everywhere and is there anyway I can copy and paste the program files from my current virtual machine onto my new bootcamp machine?

I have recently made the plunge into mac kingdom and very pleased so far.
I am going through the pain staking task of transferring music, photos etc.. from my windows laptop to my new macbook pro.
I started off by setting up file sharing and copying files but it is taking absolutely ages.
Ideally I would like to use my 500gb mybook external hard drive but given an experience I just had when putting a memory stick in my mac straight after loading it up from my pc am I likely to lose all my current external hard drive data?
Complete ball ache if thats the case as all my films are on there and burning it all to DVD would take forever.
