View 2 RepliesMy husband's computers use Tiger and Leopard (10.5.8) to access his email on the Mail program. His mail is from Comcast and uses the Comcast server, not apple or iCloud. His mail suddenly stopped working a couple of days ago.....as it did on one of my machines that still uses Tiger. He had not done any updates that could have broken the software. He does not have iCloud except on his phone and he doesn't even have a .mac address. There is no reason for the comcast server to not be able to be accessed by Mail app. He did finally update everything that needed it and it still does not work. Why would Apple's change over to iCloud break email access from other servers and how can we fix it. He really doesn't want to do his mail on Comcast's web site as it's slow and awkward.

i have an intel MacBook that i bought just before Leopard came out. Its currently running Tiger 10.4.11 and I'm thinking of upgrading it to Snow Leopard.
Ive never had problems upgrading before, but I'd like to make a backup of it first (just in case). My other Mac has Leopard on it when i bought it so I've had Time Machine to do it all for me. However, obviously, there is no Time Machine in Tiger.
Could i simply plug in an external HDD and have disc utility make a Disk Image of my MacBook HDD onto it to use as a backup?
I upgraded to Leopard quite some time ago and do not recall having any problems. I bought OS X Leopard to upgrade my parents' computers this weekend (got a good deal :-) and in both cases, their Mail did not work following the upgrade. I thought this was odd since I've never had problems upgrading OS X in the past. I also found out today at work that a friend of mine just picked up a new Mac Mini this weekend and migrated from his old iMac (running Tiger) and experienced a similar problem so perhaps there is a problem upgrading to more recent versions of Leopard. I looked in the forums but did not readily find an answer to this problem. I tried a few things, including putting aside the preferences file (plist) for mail without success.
The symptoms:
Mail comes up for the first time after the upgrade or migration from another computer and says the conversion of the mail database to the new Mail format is complete, but the message window does not open automatically and when you open it, it does not show any of your old messages. The Mail app also does not actually get mail when you ask it to, just kind of sits there. I let it go for quite a while but nothing different happened. "Quit" does not quit it, you have to force quit it.
Here's what I did to get my parents' computers fixed up:
1. Make sure Mail is not running. Force Quit if you have to.
2. Go into you <home>/Library folder.
3. Rename the "Mail" folder to something else (I used "Mail.old")
4. Start Mail.app. This time Mail will get mail from your mail server(s) but still will not show any old mail messages.
5. If any of the new incoming mail is important to you, save (export) it out somewhere.
6. Quit mail. A normal quit should work now.
7. Go into your <home>/Library folder again.
8. Delete the new "Mail" folder (do not delete the one you renamed earlier).
9. Rename the folder you renamed in step 3 ("Mail.old") back to "Mail".
10. Re-start Mail.app. Your old messages should be in your inbox and you should be able to send/receive mail.
That's it. That fixed it for 3 user accounts used in both of my parents' iMacs.
I did a fresh Leopard install onto a new HDD. I use the migration assistant to transfer my Tiger profile to a new account on the Leopard install. My default Leopard user account Mail app works for but the profile/user I migrated just will not work (mail). When I start Mail on the migrated profile I get nothing; no window except the File Menu Bar changes to "Mail". New Mail Window does nothing and I can't Quit the application..
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on a MBPro,Until several months ago my hotmail worked fine, files loaded, showed up in my Mail folder and could be answered using Mail. For the past several months Hotmail doesn't work,It downloads multiple blank files and churns the processor until the machine overloads.Hotmail does work on my iPhone.I have removed and reinstalled the account several times and very old e-mail comes in 'clean' but with duplicates.Newer e-mail comes in blank, subjectless with what looks like are duplicate.

View 17 Replies View RelatedMail worked fine until last Friday; then, suddenly,I can't send email. I can download email, surf the net, and write this, but no email out. After 4 days of apparent attempts to fix the problem, Comcast says it's an Apple problem. Apple has sent several fixes to me. Still I can't send email.
I get an error message: "sender address ..........@comcast.net was rejected by the server." If I use a browser and go to Comcast, my address and password gets me in immediately.
Making several attempts at changing Ports, at times, the error message is, "Port 25 has timed out."
I have gone through Mail Preference settings several times with Comcast and and also with settings that Apple sent.
I have a Epson Perfection 636u scanner from 1999 and am thinking of getting a new iMac. On the Epson support page, it lists the newest driver from 1999 and says that it will work on Macintosh system 7.5 to 8.6. (here is a link http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/s...s&platform=All). Any chance of this working on Tiger? I don't see myself buying a new scanner because I use it just a few times per year.

When I attempt to upgrade my Tiger installation on my 24 inch iMac, when I get to the "Select a Destination Drive" screen during the install process, my hard drive doesn't show up.
I have disconnected any external USB drives, and I have repaired my main hard drive. Has any one had any similar problems? Any suggestions?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI got a G4 iMac with a 1ghz powerPC and 512MB ram for Christmas - it came with Leopard.
It's not horrible slow but you can tell it's trudging along quite choppily at times (when I try to load anything in flash or youtube it can't handle it).
Would I be better off going to Tiger? I've never used Tiger before - would my experience on Tiger be horrible compared to Leopard?
I am planning on upgrading to Leopard soon, but I really hate the front row graphical interface of Leopard. Is there a way to get the Tiger's interface in Leopard?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm not a conspiracy theorist by any stretch of the imagination, but I've had a chain of events that leave me wondering what's going on:
First let me tell you my system: Dual G5 1.8GHz 3.5GB RAM.
Last year I could download and watch 1080i HD quicktime videos ( trailers from Apple's site ) without problems, playing at full resolution with no noticable frame dropping.
Then after a quicktime update ( don't remember which ), the performance fell down horribly to just a few frames a second for HD movies ( lower res videos still played fine ).
The next quicktime bumped up the performance back to something reasonable where I could at least "kind of" watch an HD trailer, but still there were sluggish points on most videos.
So last week I finally pony up for Leopard. Now I can watch 1080i trailers again without any problems and not a single frame drop that I notice.
What the heck??? Is this because of Leopard supposedly offloading some of the work to the video card? I think I read that it does that right?
I have actually noticed better performance all around with Leopard but most obvious is the graphics performance ( minimizing windows, dashboard, webpages etc ).
Recently my parents just bought a Macbook with Leopard on it. I own a three year old Macbook that runs Tiger. I saw this as a chance to upgrade to Leopard. I tried to install Leopard on my Macbook but it says that it can't install on my machine. I've searched various places but I've gotten vague answers. Is it because the disk is hardware specific (From what I've heard) or is it something else and I'm not getting it?
