OS X V10.7 Lion :: Slow DSL Unless Activity Monitor Utility Is Running?
Jun 17, 2012My DSL speed has droped from 3 Mbps (normal) to around .2Mbps. All other Macs on my home network are doing fine, one w. Tiger OS, the other Snow Leopard. Â
But get this -- when I launch Activity Monitor, DSL speed immediately jumps up to normal. Close A.M. and my DSL speed is back down to almost non-functioning.

Hardware :: Slow Mounting Speed In LaCie?
Feb 6, 2008I have a LaCie 320 gig external Firewire drive that worked fine in the past but for the last few months through Tiger to Leopard it has been very slow to mount. This started a while back when connected to my G5 and now continues with a new Intel iMac. It can take up to five minutes for the drive to mount and another five before it is ready to use. All during this time there you can hear the repeated clicking and whining as though it is trying to mount but without success until it eventually completes.

Nov 5, 2007I have used the disk for a number of years - all appeared to work fine - I am now backing up my data and only get Very slow transfer speed using firewire 800 - 2 hrs to transfer 1.36 Gb. Disk is connected to a Dual 1.8 Ghz Power PC G5 with firewire 800 - another d2 disk is connected to it with firewire 400 and I have just connected a Maxtor disk using firewire 400 to that. I have tried Updated the firmware (it did require it), tested the device alone on both 800 and 400 connections both slow. Restarted everything and used disk repair to check and repair the disks - repaired permissions on the startup disk.
Connected all the devices together again | LaCie 800 - LaCie 400 - and Maxtor 400. It sends data to all the other devices fast (~ 3 min for 1.6 Gb) through the LaCie 800 disk connection!, but does not send data to the LaCie 800 fast at all. Tested the other devices alone as well - they are all fast. Have also performed a TechTool Pro Ver 4 test on the the disk (Disk type ST325082 3A 232.89 Gb LaCie d2 External LUN0 revision 3.03) Passed the surface scan, disk controller and read write tests. Is the disk failing?

MacBook Pro :: Running So Slow On Startup And Apps Are Very Slow To Open Like Around 5 Minutes
Aug 24, 2014I have this MBP 13'' Mac OS X 10.7.5 running a 2.4GHz i5, 4GB RAMs and 500GB storage.The problem started yesterday when I was typing on Word and I copy pasted something from the net (chrome browser) then it froze.I waited for around 5minutes and still frozen with the spinning wheel, then I decided to turn it off by pressing power for 10 seconds restarted my
MBP then now it running so slow on start-up and apps are very slow to open like around 5 minutes. Every action that I try to do like clicking on the apple in the upper left it freezes showing a spinning wheel and it will take time to show the drop down options. I checked disk utility and it said that HD is ok, done verify/permission verify and repair.
I checked the activity monitor noting the ram/CPU usage and its normal it even tells that 2GB of ram is not use.It shows not responding in the activity monitor if you open an app for around 5mins then it opens or it will crash.I already done the 2 kinds of reset and did not work.BUT it opens normally in Safe mode.Â

Mar 21, 2012my 4 year old IMac 2.4ghz intel core 2 duo with 2gb running 10.7.3 has been running really slow since I installed photoshop CS4 and upgraded to lion ( I have 137gb of free space on hard drive) I mean it wont quit out of photoshop I always have to do a force quit and most applications run really slow. Do I need a new computer , what should I go for to have a smooth running mac?Was thinking of a new IMac 27-inch: 2.7GHz with 4gb memory.Â

Why Is Macbook Pro Running So Slow And So Slow To Reboot
Jun 6, 2012I edit using Lightroom and Photoshop and I'm having an issue while editing. After editing around 8-10 photos in Photoshop the computer starts running unbelievably slow. After each 8-10 photos I have to close down everything and reboot. Even the reboot process is super slow as I have to force quit each application usually 1-2 times to get it to close. Is this normal? I have a 2011 17" with 2.2 GHZ i7 with 8GB ram. Is there any setting that I can change or be aware of.

Sep 28, 2010Well this is an ongoing saga with my iMac. Looks like my third hard drive has gone south after 4 years. All Seagate Barracuda drives. But now I can not even boot from the the snow leopard dvd to at least run the disk utility. I tried the following: holding down 'c' and nothing, hold down options and I get the mouse cursor but nothing else.

ITunes :: Library Not Usable After Running Utility Programs
Dec 19, 2010I am running Windows XP on my desktop. I have been using Itunes for years and it has worked fine till about two weeks ago. I had been having issues with my computer being very slow so I began using several freeware programs to clean up my computer. I used Repair Doctor, AVG PC Analyzer, PC Pitstop, Glary Utilities, and Advanced System Care. I discovered that ITunes was no longer usable after using AVG PC Analyzer. I have gone back and reversed all the changes that I made using PC Analyzer and have also used Windows System Restore to go back to a time previous to most of the clean up activities. I have uninstalled ITunes several times and then reinstalled using various combination of installing ITunes and QuickTime. QuickTime is working fine, but ITunes is not working. I click on the ITunes icon and nothing happens.

Feb 21, 2012I got a Power Mac G4 from a friend. I realized i can store all my content on there and just access it remotely from my 2011 Macbook Pro. While my G4 was running remore desktop it froze. So i held the power button to shut it off and when i restarted it all i get is the Apple logo on the gray screen,and i t wont start in safe mode. I forgot to mention i started togo throught the G4 and take his name off and ad mine (hard drive name and user names). I took the hard drive out and attached it to my MacBook Pro. The hard drive works fine,And i can access everything. I tried running disc utility on the G4 hard drive with my MacBook Pro. and it said ALOT.

PowerPC :: Operating Noise Similar To Running Disk Utility
Dec 29, 2006I meant to ask this a while ago, but just getting to it now. My powerbook makes this very weird nose that I find not only annoying, but concerning. Whenever I move my mouse around, it sounds like the HDD begins doing some action and it makes a noise similar to running disk utility. Also when I have the screen open and if I carry the powerbook, say for example of I want to hand it to someone or show them something, a medium to high pitched noise comes on again emanating from the HDD area. What the heck is going on?

I'm using bootcamp assistant to try and partition my hard drive, but it gives me an error saying it cannot partition it because of unmovable files or something along those lines. Dec 23, 2007Will running the 'repair disk' disk utility on an external drive screw up any of the files on my external hard drive? I only want to run it because I can't transfer a file from my HD to the external...it's a 6 gig video file in quicktime format, and I'm getting 'error 1309', which I understand is related to file size on FAT32 format. I know it's a huge file, but I've moved others to the external that are over 20 gigs with no problems (iMovie projects, etc). Anything I can do to get this file moved to the external?

Mar 30, 2009My PPC G4 iMac is slow as hell. I plan on upgrading soon enough to a newer iMac but in the meantime I'd love to recover some speed. I know i have a woefully low amount of RAM - 768 to be exact - but apparently I'm stuck with that. It was running better in the past but with time things just slowed to a crawl with minimal things open - Mail, Safari and maybe Word and Excel. I gave up trying to run PS Elements 3 on this machine. That just makes me want to scoop my eyes out with a spoon.
I run iClean regularly, I have my desktop clear of clutter. What can I do in the interim before I buy the new iMac to help things some? Or am I just S.O.L. and just be patient and wait for the new machine?

My wifi is slow whilst my room mate who uses a PC gets a much faster speed.
My general processing speed is slowing down even though i have done a system clean using "Clean My Mac"
Safari is like a snail so I have given up completely and have been using Chrome which initially was great but the past few weeks it also is slowing down, behaves strangely and wont let me sign into either my Twitter or YouTube but again my flat mate who also uses Chrome but on a |PC has no problem with these.
I am wondering if I have a virus or well honestly dont know what is going on but things are not working as smoothly as 6 months ago and this is not what I expected from a MAC having had years and years of using sluggish PCs.
Software :: OS X 10.4.7 Running Slow?
Jul 23, 2008I've had my MacBook with 2.16Gh Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 2G of RAM for over a year. I've never had any OS or other problems with it. For the past two months, or so, it's been running very slow while running any application. I'll be working on the laptop and everything is going just fine and then, all of a sudden, the spinning pinwheel of death comes on and I have to wait 2-3 mins. before I can use the computer again. Once, the pinwheel never went away and I had to do a forced shutdown by holding the power button down.
After reading posts on your site about the same issue, I downloaded Onyx for OS X 10.4. I have run the cleaning and automation applications twice. Before doing that, I repaired the disk permissions by using the Disk Utility.app in the Utilities directory. I was hoping that cleaning out the cache and all of the other things that Onyx does would help solve the problem. But it still does the same thing.
One last note: sometimes while in Mozilla 3.0 the pinwheel appears while trying to scroll using the two-finger drag on the touchpad. Also, while writing this post I've had to stop and wait three or four times while the pinwheel spins. I think, though, that for the most part the pinwheel appears during any application whenever some information is input from the keyboard or touchpad.
Might this be a problem with a particular program?

MacBook Pro :: New Running Very Slow?
Apr 12, 2012I bought a brand new MacBook Pro in December 2011.
I have so far had no problems, using it everyday for work. I do not use a lot of programs or take up a lot of memory. I currently have 413GB free of 499GB and have hardly any apps running. My MacBook pro is now running extremely slow. It takes ages to load a web page, to open Word and even to start a new line in an email!
I am familiar with Windows and PC's but when it comes to Mac's, this is my first, and I am unsure of why this could be happening!Â
