OS X :: System Restore On A Mac?

Jan 22, 2009

I'm unfamiliar with how to perform a system restore on a Mac. On my PC I can just go through the System Tools > Sys. Restore and have my PC almost back to how it was when I bought it.

How can I do this on my Mac?

I don't have the discs it came with, nor can I get new ones.

MacBook Air :: Restore The System?

May 10, 2012

Recently I got a MacBook Air. The system is Lion. Somewhere in the manual they said I need to have Internet access should my system ever fail in order to restore it. More often than not, my connection is horrendous. Is there any alternative way? System is ok right now but I want to make sure I know my way around.

OS X :: Time Machine Restore To New HD And No System DVD?

Dec 7, 2010

I bought a new HD to upgrade my iMac. I have everything backed up on a USB drive via Time Machine. This should be simple, but now I can't find my Snow Leopard system DVD. I've looked everywhere but no luck. My current HD is starting to give me "no more space" errors, so I'm having to delete some stuff.

Is there anything I can do? Every site I've looked at says to use the system DVD to start up the computer and then restore from Time Machine. Is there some kind of DVD I can create myself? I do have an old OSX DVD from my G5, version 10.7.2. That won't work with Time Machine "automatically", so I don't think it would be helpful. Or maybe it would work, I don't know.

OS X :: Cannot Boot After Time Machine System Restore

Jan 11, 2011

I am upgrading my hard drive in my MacBook Pro and before removing the old hard drive I backed my time machine up to a NAS (Network Hard Drive). I put in the new drive and booted from the Snow Leopard DVD. I formatted it for HFS+ and then selected the option to Restore System from Full Backup. I selected my network hard drive and all seemed to go well. After clicking restart, the machine restarted, gave me the chime, and then displayed the infamous multi-language kernel panic message with some text in the background. Here's a paraphrase of the background text:

"panic (cpu 0 caller) version mis-match between Kernel and CPU PM @/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1504.9.17/osfmk/i386/pmCPU.c:707

Mac Mini :: Using Time Capsule Restore On System?

Oct 29, 2009

i did a last minute backup before i sold my late 07 Mini last weak and I was a little apprehensive abouthow well the restore would work on the new 2.53 mini.

Well I can now say I am very impressed, i turned on the new Mini and it asked if i wanted to restore and gave me a few options. i chose the TC and it was off and running, it took about 2hrs. when it finished it was like i was still using the old Mini, a perfect image clone. all my email, pictures, docs, etc. were there just like i left them.

so for those who have never done a restore you have nothing to worry about (as long as your TC doesn't crap out first LOL)

Software :: Missing System Fonts - How To Restore Them

Feb 16, 2007

A couple of weeks ago I had a mess by copying fonts on /Mac HD/Library/Fonts. I Used Lynotype Font explorer to "Clean" my system folder. The problem that I have found is that it has erased (or I Have Erased) some of the files thst should be on this library/fonts folder.

Now Im getting a lot of Not found files. Doing a Spotlight search I connot find the files in My HD. Checking one by one from a list published by someone in this place I have manged to identify at least 15 without even getting to the letter D.

The question is... Is there a way to "Reintall" this fonts from the DVD's without having to reintall my whole operating system?

Intel Mac :: How To Restore Missing System Fonts

May 22, 2012

I recently installed a couple font management tools and ever since I have noticed that I don't have the full list of default system fonts. Below is a screenshot of what I have. I notice that there are a lot of missing fonts that should be there such as Georgia, Trebuchet, Verdana and many more. Is there a way to reinstall them or restore them? I tried the restore Standard Fonts option in Font Book but says no problems encountered. I also downloaded a program called Pacifist but don't know what to do next.

OS X V10.4 :: Restore A Broken User After A System-Recovery?

Jun 26, 2012

I recently tried upgrading my PowerMac G4 from Mac OS X Tiger to Leopard, but the Mac crashed in the process and all seemed lost. However, with a system recovery, I managed to get everything back. At least, almost everything. I still had to create a new account, and this account was missing the addresses from the previous account in Addressbook. Addressbook was empty. Addressbook used to be filled with addresses from 2 accounts. I managed to recover the addresses from one account, but the other seems inaccesible. I tried restoring the account. Empty. I tried copying the files and giving myself read/write permissions. Nothing. I tried showing hidden files.Nothing. How do I recover this account/the addresses from Adressbook (I don't really care about the other files on the account).

OS X Yosemite :: Restore To 10.10.1 System Deletes Entire HD

Dec 3, 2014

I had formatted the disk on my MacBook Pro and reinstalled 10.10.1. I then reinstalled about a dozen applications. When it came to recovery of my email I had the option of using Time Machine or a Clone of the old disk. I considered the clone first but the process was ugly so I decided to use Time Machine. I started the MacBook from the recovery drive and selected Time Machine. I chose an older Time Machine Backup (i,e. one that came from a Mavericks or even earlier version of OS X. The restore came up with an error message almost immediately so I stopped and tried to restart from the main disk holding down the option key as the machine started up. But alas there was no main partition. There were only the recovery and a third party partition to select. I chose the recovery partition again and tried to run Disk Utilities. It could see the partition. I ran disk repair and volume repair to avail. I finally formatted the space and began restoring the system from scratch.

OS X Mavericks :: Time Machine System Restore?

Jul 1, 2014

I recently did an erase and restore with Time Machine from Mavericks to Leopard (on my MacBook) in order to access stored information on a couple of now-defunct programs. Subsequently I wanted to go back to Mavericks. I did what I did going from Mavericks: held down Command and R while restarting. No deal: I simply ended up with a restart each time. An internet search led me to understand (I think) my error: you need an install disc to move from Leopard to a later program. In fact, I do have a Snow Leopard install disk. But that has been rejected by the computer. That might be because the disk came with my iMac. How did I get Snow Leopard on my MacBook in the first place? An Apple service center installed it when they were servicing my MacBook, which at that time just had Leopard.

Applications :: Time Machine Restore Of HD - Cannot Copy System

Dec 30, 2009

I had the poor luck of having my Imac HD die a few weeks back. I now have a new Imac HD and would like to restore my HD back to the way it was before it died. I have gone into time machine, then selected my Imac, selected my Imac HD, and selected the correct date in time for the restore. I have clicked restore and the system goes out and starts to do its job. It identifies all the files (roughly 200k files and 11.41GB's), then it starts to copy them, and it chugs away for 30-45 mins.

Then up pops a message:
"you can't copy "system" because it has the same name as another item on the destination volume, and that volume doesn't distinguish between upper and lower case letters in file names." The restore aborts and I have wasted over an hour with nothing to show for it. What can I do to restore my system? I have been unable to operate for 3 weeks now, and the people at the apple store just keep telling me how easy time machine is to restore from.

I did find a ethernet cable so my question is, can I cancel the restore? And restart it via ethernet cable? It doesny list an option to cancel but can I just turn off by the power button or turn off time capsule?

IMac (Intel) :: Save Emails Then Restore System

Aug 29, 2014

My iMac is starting to be a bit slow and I think it,s due to the fact that as a new iMac user, I downloaded lots of things I don't really need.  I have all of my files on an external hard drive so I'm not scared of what I might loose if I reset my system.

Only thing I'm scared are my emails.  Is there a way for my to save everything on an external drive, restore my system (which I don't know how to do) and once everything is back in order, I could simply import my emails and it would be as if nothing happened (well, for my emails at least)?

OS X :: How To Repair System After Full Restore To Time Machine Backup

Jan 13, 2011

I decided to restore to a Time Machine backup I had done a few days earlier, hoping that I would just "start" fresh. Without realizing it, I had inserted the Leopard install dvd that came with my computer, and restored to my 10.6.6 backup. I got the "You must restart your computer" error, which I found out was a result of using the Leopard disk. So, I redid the restore using a Snow Leopard installer on USB.

After this, everything appeared to be working fairly well. However, today, I've started to get system crashes quite frequently, and at times I haven't been able to properly shut down or restart. I noticed that Spotlight was indexing, and would hang at "3 hours remaining" or "estimating time left." Right now, I have created a second admin account, and I have disabled indexing. It seems to be working, at least temporarily, because I'm using it right now.

Applications :: Deleted Entire ITunes Library - System Restore

Sep 23, 2007

I accidentally deleted my entire iTunes library. What happened was that I intended to delete all the songs from just one artist but for some reason, my iTunes deleted everything in my library which I have collected over the past 6 years. It gets worse because:

1 - I can't get my files back from my iPod because it died about a year ago
2 - I agreed to move all files to my recycle bin (at that point I had no idea I was deleting my entire library) and when I went to check the bin, none of the files were there
3 - I attempted a system restore but all it did was to return my folders with no files in them
4 - I tried to use a couple of undelete files software but none of them found the deleted files.

I'm really desperate to get my files back.
