Software :: Headphone Jack Not Working - No Sign Underneath The Audio Gauge

Nov 5, 2010

I've read other threads similar to mine but none of them seem to be exactly what I'm having trouble with.My internal speakers work fine but when I put my headphones in, or any kind of external audio device, it doesn't work. When I press the volume buttons it has the "no sign" underneath the audio gauge. Oh by the way this is a macbook from 2008.

MacBook Pro :: Speakers Not Working - Audio Fine From Headphone Jack

Apr 24, 2012

This morning, the speakers on my MacBook Pro (Early '09) stopped working, but the machine transmits through the headphone jack just fine. I've done a PRAM reset, and that hasn't fixed it.

MacBook Pro :: No Audio - Volume Box With (Not Permitted) Sign Ø Underneath

Aug 28, 2014

I have been having this problem reoccur for the past couple days, but I don't know what is causing it. Occasionally, when I press the volume keys on my keyboard, it doesn't make the "click" sound (I don't have it set so that it doesn't make noise). I still have this problem when I use my earphones.

I made sure that the audio output in my system preferences is set to "internal speakers", made sure that my OS is up to date and have even tried resetting my computer. Nothing seems to work. And it really happens out of the blue as well -- I would be watching a video or listening to some music with no issue at all, browse around some other pages and come back to see that I can't hear the audio anymore. This doesn't seem to happen while I'm watching the videos though.

Eventually after repeatedly increasing and decreasing the volume (with no sound coming out of my computer) this pops up and  does not allow me to change the volume at all even if I press the volume keys on my keyboard:

MacBook :: Audio Output - Headphone Jack

Jul 9, 2009

I was using my 13" White Macbook (Spring 07) all day today, listening to music on headphones while working. I brought my computer over to a friend's house and attempting to line out some audio from Garage Band to speakers through the headphone jack and suddenly all audio began to have skips & spaces every second or so. I can still the hear songs but they are constantly interrupted. I tried Itunes & audio from the internet, and two different pairs of headphones I know work. Same problem every time. The strange thing is that the audio works perfectly out of the internal speakers. Has anyone had this same problem? I haven't seen anything on the web that was similar. I tried the Q-Tip/Toothpick trick suggested on a bunch of other threads. But I don't think it's an issue of the computer not adjusting to the headphone setting. Also tried to resetting the battery, but that didn't work either.

i have an intel macbook running leopard with the most recent update. A problem arose a day before the update was installed wherein my macbook no longer transmits sound through the headphone jack. i have no reason to suspect a hardware failure, there has been no damage to the computer. is there any way this could (please, god) be a software failure? and if so, one that i can fix?

MacBook Pro :: Use The Audio In Option In The Headphone Jack On The New 13"?

Jun 17, 2012

I just bought the brand new macbook pro 13" lowest grade and do a lot of simple recording. My old macbook had both an audio in and out. one labeled headphones and one with the two triangles pointing toward the circle. It was expressed to me that this new one jack could support audio out and in as labeled by apples tech specs. I tried hooking up my synthesiser to the port yet garageband did not recognize an audio in port, nor did the computer.

OS X :: Output Audio To Headphone Jack ITunes & Internal Speakers?

Dec 15, 2009

I feel like I once had a PrefPane for this problem but just am having a hard time searching for it. Currently I have my heaphones jack Line-In routed to my AV Receiver for iTunes music in my room, but whenever I am YouTubing or other stuff while listening to music the System Sounds come out of my Loudspeakers too. I am interested in routing only the iTunes audio through the headphone jack, and everything else to run through my iMac's internal speakers (2007 iMac AL).I saw the SoundFlower thing out there but didn't think that was the ticket

MacBook :: Audio Device Freezing And Delicate Headphone Jack?

Apr 9, 2010

I am using a unibody MacBook (non-Pro). I have 2 issues, the first one is that whenever I plug in an audio device such as headphones or speakers while iTunes is playing, the song will freeze for about 30 seconds. The computer gets very laggy and iTunes freezes. Not even the media/volume buttons on the keyboard work. I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and iTunes 9.1 (79). ALSO i have another problem I have been having since I got the MacBook I'm sure. I plug in a device into the standard headphone jack, and it just kind of sits there half plugged in (like not clicked in all the way). And so i have to push it to make it actually work, but here's the thing, if I'm listening to music in bed for example or on a slightly non-solid surface the headphones will just "pop out"! ... Like not literally but they will come out a slight bit and then the audio starts playing through the internal MacBook speakers. I'm pretty sure (but don't quote me on it) that Apple earphones do not pop out. If this is some sort of technique Apple is using to get me to buy their headphones then forget about it. I love to listen to music so I need my nice headphones. BTW the headphones I am using DO NOT "pop out" of any other audio device I own. In fact I can hang my iPod Touch from them without them coming out or loosing connection. Most audio devices I plug into the MacBook have the same problem, except the Apple branded iPod headphones as I mentioned earlier.

MacBook Pro :: Get Audio To Receiver With Higher Quality Than The Headphone Jack?

Apr 29, 2012

I recently got a receiver and surround sound speaker system.  The quality of the audio from the CD player connected to it is far beyond the quality of the audio that comes from the MacBook pro via headphone jack to RCA connection.  This was confirmed by burning a CD from the MacBook, placing it in the CD player then testing the two against each other  -  the same audio piece from the CD player or the MacBook, both connected to the same receiver/speaker set up.  What other options might get better audio quality from the MacBook to the receiver?

MacBook Pro :: U-MBP Headphone Jack Stopped Working

Sep 29, 2009

I bought my unibody MBP back in late July from the Apple store here. It's been a great machine. Except all of a sudden my headphone jack won't play sound. I realized this last night as I tried to listen to music on it while surfing the web. I've plugged headphones into it maybe 10 times total. And they worked every time before. If I unplug the headphones and plug them back in repeatedly I can get them to work after about the 4th or 5th time. When they do work, the sound is great. Anyway, I made an appointment with the genius bar this afternoon to show them and see if there is anything they can do. Obviously, after paying $2,500 for a laptop I would expect it to run completely flawlessly. But at the same time, I'm hoping they don't offer to replace it with a refurbished one. In fact, I would prefer to not even get a new one. I love this one, I guess I just hope it's fixable.

MacBook Pro :: Unibody Headphone Jack & Speakers Are Not Working?

Mar 15, 2010

I have a Macbook Pro 13" unibody I purchased in June 2009. Just recently, the headphone jack stopped working. I tested many different headphones and speakers, and none of them work. I am suspecting a hardware issue, because when I plug it in, i head the static while it is being plugged in. However it does not switch the audio. The only thing is, if it was a hardware problem, wouldn't it be stuck in the headphone mode because the switcher is stuck?

MacBook Air ::Headphone Jack Stopped Working Since Update

Feb 10, 2012

Sound is working fine on my MBA - but when i plug anything into the headphone jack i hear a millisecond of sound then nothing, as soon as i take it out again, it is still playing fine through built in speakers. I think it started happening after i downloaded and installed the latest update but i'm not 100% sure. Tested headphones, stereo etc. and nothing, working. (stereo & headphones work fine through iphone etc. so it's not the cable or the jack) It also does seem like it takes longer for the MBA to recognise something is plugged in? could be a software bug on the new update?

MacBook Pro :: Headphone Jack No Longer Working After Repair

Jun 19, 2012

Recently I had a issue with my macbook pro so I had it repaired at the Apple Store(problem with the display). They replaced the logicboard(2nd time in 4 months) and the battery. Now after taking it hope and plugging in my external speakers into the headphone jack I get this weird thump sound. It happens twice and I'll watch the audio strength at the top right. Each time it goes from like it's working to a gray color as if it's not or locked. If I try to play something like music with the jack in my entire screen freezes and I have to restart my computer entirely for it to work. Btw there is no red light in the headphone jack. The last time I had the logic board replaced it was a sound problem.

MacBook Pro :: Headphone Jack Not Working, Requires Logic Board Replacement?

Sep 19, 2009

I noticed today that the headphone jack on my 13" MBP is not working. I recall it working within the last few days but now nothing. I see no immediate evidence of external damage or foreign object intrusion, and the MBP has not even moved from the desk where it was last used.Suppose I have to go back to the Apple Store to have it fixed, which is a bummer because I literally just had it in there like a week ago to get the optical drive replaced. If the headphone jack does not work, is it required to replace the whole logic board, or is it a part they can typically replace individually? If the logic board needs replacing, do they have to order it in, or do they sometimes keep those in stock? I'd like to know as this might require me to leave the laptop there for several days again which might need some planning on my part.
