I had to format my MBP and hence took a complete backup of my machine. Now I'd like to retrieve ONLY the Bookmarks from the backup that exists on my external HD that was backed up using Time Machine. Is there a way I can do that?Â
To extend this original question, I want to retrieve only selected items from the backup viz. Only my data Only some applications, Only the text written in sticky notes in widgets, Only data in my Address book etc.Â

Somehow bookmarks in one of my Safari bookmark folders got deleted in the course of attempting to move the folder. When I go into time machine to restore an earlier version of my book marks time machine does not display the contents of the caches folder where I understand the Safari bookmarks are kept, i.e. ~/library/caches/metadata/safari/bookmarks..Â
Is there a way to get time machine to display contents of the caches and metadata folders? If not, is there another way to restore an earlier version of my Safari bookmarks? I have separate backups on external drives in addition to the time machine backup.Â

Stupid mistake, simple question. Was taking down some notes in TextEdit, closed file by mistake without saving. Anything I can do?
I should point out the file does exist, it just obviously reverted back to the state it was in before I did the particular hour or so of work in it.
EDIT: Should also point out I'm not using Time Machine.

it does not back up only my internal drive, but also two external drives. However, I have noticed something. The one external drive I unplug sometimes to use somewhere else. When I do this and go into time machine, that drive no longer appears in the history.

I connected my windows removable disk to my colleague's mac to transfer some data. Accidentally her system started a time machine backup on my removable disk. Although we stopped it during middle of the process, now my disk is no longer recognizable in windows and all I can see under a mac system is her backup file.
The process took a very short time. I wonder if it has deleted everything. Is there any chance I can get the overwritten data back? They are very important to me.
Besides, is it a common problem of time machine backup? It is too dangerous for the removable disks.

I have a file I alter once about a week, each time I alter it I save it as a new one, with a date included in the name.So I have a series of files something like
xxxxx march 13.numbers
xxxxx march 07.numbers
xxxxx march 01.numbers
etc.
This morning when I updated and saved the march13 file I accidentally saved it as xxxxxx march 13, not xxxxxx march 20 which it should have been. No problem, go into time machine and retrieve the march 13 file I thought. Its not there. Its not there from just before the save to any time it should be there !
Luckily I was able to retrieve it as I also have a once a week online backup so I went into the last one of those and retrieved "xxxxxx march13" which proves it did exist, it has a creation date of march 17 but if I look at TM for march 18 its not there - why isn't it in my time machine backup?
All the other files in that folder are as expected so the only thing that makes any sense to me is that TM hasn't been backing up over the past week or so but TM error logger shows no errors.

I wasn't aware of the fact that there was a way to export firefox bookmarks until after I formatted my hard drive. However, I backed things up in Time Machine first. Is there a way to somehow get my old bookmarks or is it a lost cause?

I am trying to retrieve an iPhoto file from a week ago.Â
One week ago I attempted to upgrade to Lion, then realized that was not what I wanted to do and rebooted from my clone to restore to Snow Leopard.Â
When I opened iPhoto however, I realized that the iPhoto library was way further back than I had remembered.Â
I used my Time Machine backup to get my old iPhoto library back (not to try to merge, just to retreive the file) and I get the error message: "This operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access "iPhoto Library."Â
I already repaired permissions on the volume. What gives?

I have a hard drive that has backed up my desktop computer using time machine. My desktop computer is now on it's way to my new location, and in the meantime I'd like to put all the backed up stuff onto my laptop. How do I load all the time machine stuff onto the laptop? Is there a way of like, important it all, or do I have to go in and just manually copy over whatever I want?

I just replaced my old hard drive today, and transferred over all data/settings etc using time machine. Everything went well until I tried to open mail. It instructed me to import my emails, and after click "done". Fine. Now I can't open mail. Restarted. Tried to open mail, and again, it instructed me to do the same thing? Btw - I'm using a late 2006 intel imac, with Snow Leopard (10.6.8).
