I have a few year old iBOOK G4 with the glowing apple on the back of the screen much like, if not the same as, the newer Macbooks. I have seen some pictures of people modding the lit apple on the back to a color of their choice. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas, links, or "how-to's" on this subject.
View 4 Repliesafter re flowing my ibook i decided to customize my ibook, so i got some methylated spirits and black spray paint, cracked it open stripped the paint off (using the meths) and painted it! (i have only painted the top of the screen and the battery cover) the top cover has been painted from the outsideibook top screen and battery ibook top cover (soz for the bad picture i took it on my phone)
View 7 Replies View RelatedMy iBook (running OS 10.3.9) over the last week had been exhibiting some strange problems. Programs would often become unresponive, sometimes to the extent of a hard reset. The problems slowly got worse, until i decided that it would be best to back-up my 2000 songs in my iTunes library, and attempt to repair the OS. I didnt manage to back-up my music, as the computer was too unresponsive, so i went with the repair option. This attempt failed. I then tried to install the "OS and associated apps" in the hopes of being able to recover my music. This also failed, and seems to have corrupted my computer. Now, when i turn on my iBook, it has the grey screen for a while, before going to a black screen saying "/etc/master/passwd: no such file or directory" So now, im praying that there is some way to get my music back, or something that i can do to repair or re-install the OS, while retaing my files.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI changed the username, passwords, background, settings, name of the harddrive and all that, but left her music and photos on for the time being. Then I turned it off for the night. I remember something popping off before it turned off, and I think it was just saying changes had been made or something like that. And I THOUGHT I had pressed okay to save those changes....it was late. But I turn it on this morning and it's practically gone back to basics. EVERYTHING is gone...no music, no photos. The settings and background are factory status. iTunes, iPhoto, and iChat are responding like I'd never used them. The only thing that stayed was my user name, the photo, and the name of the hard drive. I've looked through the computer and havent found anything. I couldnt have restored it, could I?

I have recently come across an extremely cheap ibook (free) which i was able to keep if I got it too work. Well I've been successfully fairly by using it for a few weeks, then it just died. Not sure how it did but it did. The problems seem to be with the flashing (Finder/?) folder on a gray screen back ground. I've already run through the [URL] tutorials of what's wrong and have successfully done a PRAM and a PMU reset with no result. One of the times that I restarted the iBook and after the flashing folder got two new separate folders. One with an arrow turning clockwise on the left, and another folder with an arrow pointing right on the right. Both in blue folders as the flashing folders. Now I believe the problem is that the iBook is unable to find and utilize the Startup Disk. Forums I have read state to put in the reinstall disc, which I don't see how that will work on account of the CD tray not responding to anything I've yet put in there. Not trying with disc until i know that is the only possible solution. Don't want to loose my disc. Maybe some of you have come across this situation and know of a sure fire way to fix it. If not, Ill have to just send it in to some site.

I've searched the forums and apple site, but I can't find any information about this, and I'm not really comfortable selling it on ebay!
I was at the Apple store this weekend and stumbled onto their mini VGA to S-Video/Composite video adapter. It was cheap so I picked it up and took it home to my G3 ibook (white 12", not the colorful ones). I hooked it up the ibook, then the TV (Aquos 32" HD) via a composite video cord and started the ibook. No picture. I restarted the ibook a few times, adjusted the screen resolution and still no picture.
I then started the ibook without the adapter and hooked the adapter up once the ibook was running. The screen on the ibook dimmed and came back quickly, but no video on the TV. Anyone have any ideas? I'm not sure where to start.
I just moved back up to Jacksonville with my friend and now his iBook G4 is not booting. It goes to the white Apple screen and spins for about twice as long as normal, and then goes to a black screen with just a type-cursor in the top left hand corner which erases any text submitted. Now, from there I went ahead and booted from the Tiger Install disk and ran permission repair and also disk repair, without any glitches. Also, we then booted again and ran a hardware diagnostic and it turned up absolutely no problems with the computer. Any ideas? Luckily, he's still under his first year of AppleCare (and he's about to purchase an extension since you can now get it in Florida legally) and he should be covered.

I have an iBook G4 (Late 2004) that I just recently upgraded to Leopard using the 10.5.6 DVD included in the Mac Box Set. Whenever it boots, after the chime the screen stays black until the login screen. This happened occasionally with Tiger, but I found a post somewhere where someone suggested to hold the power button while powering on until you hear a beep. That solved it in Tiger, but I have not once seen a grey Apple screen in Leopard.
I forgot to mention that I have reset the PRAM and PMU.
A friend of mine brought over his 14" iBook G4, 1.33GHz, 60GB HDD and 1.25 GB RAM. The problem with it is that upon start-up, the grey screen with the apple/turning gear comes up, then after a few moments a blue screen will appear, though no box showing the start-up process. I've run a few basic diagnostics on this, including the lovely disk utility (which did nothing), I've run fsck, zapped the PRAM, etc, no success as of yet. At one point, I received a screen with alternating folders, one showing the smiley mac face, the other folder with a flashing "?". I cannot replicate this for the life of me. I have attempted to acquire files via TDM, though am not able to see the hard drive despite using 2 different laptops. Possibly the firewire cable itself is spent, though it's brand new! Here is where I become increasingly frustrated: I ask my friend for the boot disks as the ones for my own 12" iBook don't work (for whatever reason). He tells me that he loaded Leopard this summer (currently running 10.5.2, no updates loaded since), then proceeds to bring over boot discs for a MacBook...:headdesk: To begin with, it seemed like the HDD was fried, however, after running disk utility (and not hearing any negative sounds), it does appear that the HDD is fine. I'm thinking a kernel panic, though not sure how to resolve these.
View 11 Replies View RelatedEver since I sold it here on MR and got it back, there has been a problem with my 12" Dual USB iBook G3 500MHz's screen (lord, that's a long name). Whenever the screen is tilted back farther than 45 degrees or so, the backlight shuts off. I can open the casing and fix it if it's possible. Does anyone know what the problem with it is? I'm trying to get it fixed up and ready to sell back to my friend as his first Mac, and I'm trying to get every problem resolved
View 4 Replies View Relatedjust installed 10.5.6 on their last gen. iBook.She left the iBook plugged in to the mains and came back to find that the iBook was alternating between the grey Apple screen and a light blue desktop screen where she could see the cursor. Sometimes it would also switch to a blue screen without a cursor.
I've tried holding shift during startup - no effect.
I've tried rebooting NVRAM - no effect.
I have an iBook G4 1.07 GHz 30 gb 256 RAM with Panther. It was working fine until my HD got close to being full. Now I can't get it to boot past the Apple screen. It will either freeze there, or move on to the blue screen and freeze before the progress bar enters. I want to re-install Panther but I can't get any CD to boot during startup by holding "C", including the Panther OS CD, the Hardware Test CD, or the Tech Tool CD. I am able to boot to single user mode, where I type fsck -fy, and I recieve no errors with the hardware. I had this issue beore and my HD had to be replaced by Apple.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a G3 iBook and just the other day the display stopped working. There were no signs of the display going bad, it's just went. Am I able to boot the iBook via Target Disk Mode on my PowerBook and run the iBook Hardware Test CD on it? Also, can I reboot my PowerBook and choose the iBook as the startup volume?
I know how to do Target Disk Mode but the latter I'm not sure about.
My brother's iBook G4 (800Mhz, First Rev) has completely splattered itself and we're getting a new Macbook for him under insurance. My iBook G3 (White, 900Mhz G3..the last G3 Rev of the iBook) has a failing hard drive.
Now, could I swap out those two drives, at least to recover stuff? And is there a specific method of opening up the iBook G4 so that I don't break stuff (I've already messed with my G3..and ended up with a dozen extra screws ^_^
Mainly the aim is to salvage the hard drive and swap them out; replacing my faulty iBook G3 one with the iBook G4 one which is perfectly fine.
My iBook G4 power supply failed and I'm awaiting a replacement. In the mean time, can I use the power supply from my iBook G3 with the iBook G4?

How much faster would the G4 be over my G3. I figure that after selling my G3, the G4 would only be another $200ish on top of it. Would this be worth it?
I just bought a parts ibook from ebay, but I managed to fix it, except there was no hard drive. I currently have a 6 GB HD in it with OS X.3.9 on it, but I want tiger. I have the tiger family pack, so I have a license for it. It only has a CD-ROM drive, so I am wondering if I can buy a 40 GB HD, and clone the one from my G4 onto it.

What would be the advantages of one over the other? I just really love the fact that a MacBook Pro would be portable yet powerful. And yes, I have this iBook for portability to school and such, but if I want to do extensive work on the couch, I could bring a MBP vs. an iMac. What do you all think? Are too laptops redundant?

View 2 Replies View RelatedIn my ongoing project, my next goal is to see if I can't alter the blue plastic outer case (the stuff on the front, top, and back), the foggyish white panels on the side, and the apples in the middle of them. I already have everything separated and I have no intention of putting it back together until it looks different somehow. Maybe if I could change some of it from foggy to glossy or (ideally) clear (blue seethru would be very spiffy).

I just took apart an old logitech controller, but the port will only fit for the one for the extra buttons, and I cant change the hardware encoded in the controller.

I would just go for a Logitech, but with mac they don't support autofocus (even though it claims too, all the reviews I've read say it doesn't work).
