View 4 Replies View RelatedJust bought my first Mac, and all is well except sharing issues. I have been using OS X for all of two days so far, so please excuse me if I ask really stupid questions.
I know this topic has been covered plenty of times already, and I have searched and tried the solutions from plenty of different threads, and other websites. None seem to work for me.
Basically I live in a Windows world, all the other computers at Home, and the computers at work are all PC's on either XP, or Vista. So I really need to be able to swap files and share printers.
I have tried to set up the shared printer through CUPS and I received; "Unable to connect to CIFS host after (tried 3 times)". I can't see my shared Windows computers in Finder, and I can't see my Mac in Windows Network Center.
I have a windows server 2008 machine that is using NFS and I'm trying to get my tiger machine 10.4.11 to connect to it but with no such luck. Anyone else have any experience with this? I want to use it for crossplatform sharing but this isn't showing much promise with that..
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen dragging a file into a folder window which is partially off the bottom of the screen, OS X will slide it up so that the whole thing is in view. I can't tell you how many times I've dragged something into the wrong folder because suddenly there's a different folder underneath my cursor. Is there any way to turn this off? It does not suit my workflow at all.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI currently use a keyboard protector (Moshi clearguard) on my MBP but after usage, the protector makes the keyboard really ugly to look at. It isn't as "clear" as many people have reviewed. Anyway, when I try using it without the protector, the oil from my fingertips (my fingers feel dry!) seem to make the keys glossy (the nasty kind of glossy)
I realize that I can use the keyboard without the protector, and then scrub it down every week but that seems like a huge hassle.
Is there a way I can make the keys look exactly like they look without the protector and still make it resistant from the gloss from the skin oil?
Maybe apply a small special film on each of the keys? or get some professional coating done on the keys?
The Moshi protector seemed somewhat clear when I first used it but after time, it really isn't clear and makes the keyboard look dirty
I've decided it's about time to reinstall Leopard. It's been just over a year and so I feel it's about time to get that fresh new feel. Only problem is that my superdrive on my macbook is dead. My question is, how can I go about installing Leopard? I have no other macs in the house. Can I do it via remote disc with a PC? I've heard about mounting the disc to an external HDD and booting from that, but my USB ports also seem to be dead, so at the moment eject any external HDD automatically after 10 minutes or so (my poor mac is dying!!). Can I do it via a Firewire external HDD? I dont have one of these, but may be able to get my hands on one. I don't have an external disc drive. So, many problems to block various roots. Right now I'm thinking that doing it via remote disc would be easiest, but I am not sure if this is possible or not?

Is there a list of all the different ways to boot/start up a macbook air? I know the option key allows you to boot from different partitions or drives, and command-R takes you straight to recovery. I've heard of booting directly into single user mode, but can't find the key combination to press, and are there any others?

I added a few new albums to different artist folders, and instead of adding each folder to the library individually [using "Add to Library" from the File menu], I decided to take a shortcut and add my entire Music folder to the Library.
Now, a load of stuff is missing, and I have a massive collection, so I don't know exactly what's there and exactly what has gone. Searching using Finder confirms that the files are completely gone from my hard drive.
I have just had to replace the keyboard on my son's MBP and it is one of the first C2D ones with the old function key layout on the keyboard. I was not able to get a replacement with the old layout so have one of the later ones. Does anyone know how I can update it to have the newer layout?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just tried to download Adobe Digital Editions as an advice from a friend of mine, saying it was a nice way do read ebooks. So I decided to give it a try. Besides not being able to download it I was delighted with the grammatical mistakes in the pop-up window that was downloading the application. It is refreshing to see a company that does not even care to proofread what they publish.

Like the title says is it possible to back up only a certain folder in time machine? I'm a producer and dj and instead of manually backing my files up every few months I'd like it to happen automatically but I don't care for any of the other programs or anything on my computer.

View 1 Replies View RelatedFor a while now my eMac monitor has been flickering and my screen geometry has been fluctuating (it comes out about a half inch on each side, then snaps back to regular size). I just came back from getting something to eat and my screen was black; power light was on and the computer was humming but totally black screen. I clicked and moved the mouse and hit some keys, but no response (power saver settings are turned off). I did a hard reset using the power button and the screen remained black for several seconds before it finally came back.
This computer is pretty old, I've had it for 6 or 7 years now. I think the monitor is finally going out. I definitely don't have enough for a new computer, so I want to squeeze as much use out of this one as I can. Are there any ways I can extend the life of this monitor and/or repair it? If not, what's the cheapest way to work-around a dead monitor? Is it even possible to attach an external display to an eMac?
Trying to reformat my mac mini. I'm a designer and haven't reformat for some time now. I'm fairly new to Mac, I got Original Disc's. I need to reformat but I have no hard-wire keyboard. I know/heard/tried doing the "hold down C" and "option" but I'm assuming its not working because I have a wireless keyboard?
Question: Is there an alternative way in doing a Hard/Complete/Erase reformat when having a wireless keyboard. What options do I have? I have also tried going over to Utility and erase section but the options to select or rename and type, is "un-selectable"? Is this normal?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm afraid this reveals really basic ignorance on my part but can someone please tell me what aspect of a computer's performance is affected by having more or less Ghz, more or less GB of Ram or more or less GB of hard disc memory? For instance, if a choice must be made is it better to have more Ghz or more memory (and if the latter, more Ram or more on the hard disc?) As a concrete example, I have recently acquired an iBook with 1.2 GHz, 1.25 GB RAM and a 30GB hard disc. I intend to use it mainly for web browsing, email and word processing. I undersatnd that the Ghz and RAM cannot be increased but I could have the hard disc upgraded to say 160GB. But what would be the effect on performance, and would it be worthwhile?
