May 15, 2012I've a user who has been given a company shared MacBook Air. The account name was previously our company name, but I've sucessfully followed the guide [URL] to change this. Thus, the username is now now his firstname & lastname. The home folder is firstnamelastname. However, the old username (our company name) is still showing up as the username for some email recipients and airdrop.I'm guessing the email name might be saved localy on a few of the users contacts since he's been sending a few emails before the user name was updated. Can this be confirmed in any way?

Jan 6, 2010I've got my current name as "JoeDuffy" (As seen here: [URL]). My username/login ETC is "JosephDuffy"/"Joseph Duffy". I'd like to change my home area name to "JosephDuffy", is this at all possible? It's just when using my Contact Card, it never finds me, and creates a new card, a tad annoying, it's also just inconsistency, and I have a bit of a Mac OCD about it.

May 20, 2012I have renamed my home directory using the root then I restarted the computer. Then, I logged on with the same account that I have and I found that all the old folders have been moved to a new folder in the new directory under the old directory name.How to get back!I tried to rename it again by replacing the new name with the old name but it didn't work.. is there anyway to undo the change!! May 23, 2012iMac OS X 10.6.8. previously migrated account -- need to rename the account at the destination. Step 6 in the support page does not occur. I never get a chance to hit OK to this: 6. Click OK when "A folder in the Users folder already has the name 'account name'. Would you like to use that folder as the Home folder for this user account?" appears. Note: This will correct the ownership of all files in the Home folder, and avoid permissions issues with the contents. A red flag appears in the field that conflicts (either the short name or the full name). The name(s) cannot be changed! must cancel out.Â

May 23, 2012On my Mac Mini, I have set up a new user because of problems with the OS. So far, it is working fine. I also have a G5 running OS 10.4.11. There is an account on both machines with the same name. However, the new account on the Mini is a different name. The G5 does not offer the "login as" (at least that I can see, so my access to the new account on the Mini is limited to a dropbox. To simplify: A is the account on both the Mini and the G5, B is the account only on the Mini. I tried extending the permissions on B's home directory, but that did not work. Using get info, I unlocked the file then tried to add A to the list of users. For some reason, nothing happened.Â
How can I give user A permission to access user B's home directory on the Mini?

Mar 20, 2012I want to sync my MacBook Pro w/ my iMac (both running Lion).I want to be able to come home from a business trip and have all of the new / edited info on my MacBook (new photos (organized & edited), changes to various folders in "documents", random files/folders added to desktop, changes made in iTunes, etc) show up on my iMac, which I work off of while at home. And of course the reverse - sync the changes on my iMac to my MacBook before I travel again.Wouldn't it be possible to copy a User's Home Folder on Machine 1 to an external drive, and then use that to replace / update the Home Folder on Machine 2? Or possibly do a complete Disc Clone (i.e. Super Duper) of Machine 1, and then use that to "restore" Machine 2? What are the pros and cons?And any better solutions? I realize that my proposals may be over simplified, but also that my goal must be a common one.

Apr 5, 2012I am trying to write /Users/xxx to a Lexar 8g flash drive. Its size is under 1g. I can easily put subfolders onto the drive, but if I try to feed it the entire home folder it tosses it out again. I don't know how to use Finder to reach the /Users folder, where xxx is just a subfolder, but I can do this from the terminal command line; however, then I got stuck on how to proceed: I tried to mount /dev/disk1 [which diskutil shows as its name]; each variation I'v tried runs into some problem: disk busy, not found, etc. I was using sudo commands, so I don't think it's a permissions problem.

The reason is that my Microsoft Office has a certain issue that is only solvable by starting up in a new user. So now I want to transfer all the personality, data, files, and all that from my home user to the new user on the same computer. After that, I want to delete the old Home user and make the new user the default home user account.

May 4, 2012I purchased the latest MacBook Pro 17" in March 2012 in Australia. Because of "screen issues" I had to take my computer back to the Apple Store where they reinstalled Lion OS 10.7.3. Using Time Capsule I put retrieved all my information. However, I have noticed that my home folder has my married name and I want it to show my maiden name as I am now divorced. My account name is correct, it is just the home folder name.

May 21, 2012I have a disk image .dmg file, and chage the icon by highlighting the file in Finder, then press Command-I. Then I'll copy and past a new icon in the file information dialog box. I can then see the new icon in the finder, and also the icon for this file in the dock changes. Great. Then I'll rsync the .dmg file from one Mac to another, and the icon reverts to the default icon for .dmg files. Is there any way to make the icon change stick, when copying the file to another Mac?Â

May 1, 2012Is there any way that the default stack memory limit for a user in Mac OS X Lion? You can you ulimit in Terminal.app to display information, you cannot change any values.Â
This is what is returned from ulimit when you try to change the stack memory size.Â

-bash: ulimit: stack size: cannot modify limit: Operation not permittedÂ
Also, the default value is 8192KB which is approx. 8MB. That is weak, especially on my 2011 iMac with 16GB of RAM. I mainly do scientific programming on my Mac (Fortran). These programs usually require a larger stack size. One option is to allocate data to the heap but that is very slow.Â

May 28, 2012Recently all the Mac's in my household forced a password change for both of the user accounts that I have on them. These are local accounts not domain accounts. It appears that something has expired the password on all my machines at around the same date. I do not or at least did not have a password policy set on these machines prior to this incident. I have searched the release notes for recent OS X updates and have not found any reference that explains this behavior. Hence, I am concerned that this could be malware/trojan activity however none of the scanners I have tried has detected any malware.

Apr 6, 2012Every file created within the Shared folder is automatically a "read-only" for all other users. How can I make all users able to edit all files within the Shared folder? - The "Apply to enclosed items" does only apply settings to existing files. This means that for every new file you add, you have to press "Apply to enclosed items". - Surely there must be a way to apply the folders setting to all future content? All I want is for this folder to function as any external hard drive; accessible by all accounts without any restrictions!

Mac OS X Lion Server :: 10 User File Sharing Limit After 10.7.4 Upgrade?
Jun 14, 2012Has anyone noticed a strange 10 user file sharing limit after upgrading to 10.7.4 server? Using DeployStudio to mass deploy 10.7.4 Lion images in a school. Since upgrading to 10.7.4 server, I am now limited to 10 logins on the repository. Thought this might be a DeployStudio issue, but it seems more like the server is imposing the restriction. If I do a manual login to the shared folder where the image files are kept on the server, I can only do it from 10 computers and computer 11 will refuse to login.

Feb 12, 2012I have files with no creation date or creation date 1969, etc (came from bad settings in camera).
Since I knew the date, I was able to easily fix it via touch:
touch -t 20090110 IMG_1023.JPGÂ
This used to set creation, modification, and access time to 20090111, in Snow Leopard.  However, I can no longer do this in Lion. It does set modification and access, but creation date is still screwed up.Â

If I choose the file and select open with / and choose another application (VLC) then select always open with- it opens that file ok. But I want a global change so all AVI types open with VLC media player.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Change File Preview In Finder?
Apr 6, 2012So I just finished my latest short film, and I exported it to Finder. However I don't like the preview Finder chose for my video, it simply chose a random frame from my video and made that the preview of the file. I have a custom poster I made for the video I would like to make the preview of the file. I've look at other websites and they all mistook "preview" for icons. I am not talking about the icon of the file, I am talking about the actual preview of the file. If you open the Info pane of an image or a video file, there will be a tab under "Open With" named "Preview" and shows the preview thumbnail for the file. Can anyone tell me how I can manually change the preview of a file? I thought about importing the video into iTunes, change the cover art and take it out again, however because the file is encoded with Apple ProRes 4444 iTunes won't accept it and even if it did it would have been converted to other format, which is something I am trying to avoid and I would like to keep it ProRes 4444.
