OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Dock Not Launching Upon Startup Or Login?
Apr 16, 2012
My dock won't reappear. I've gone to Terminal and typed killall Dock, and it says there is no process called that. So after literally two days of troubleshooting, I found the Dock.app file, and when I click it, the dock opens, my wallpaper (which was permanently blue) comes back, everything is fine. Until I quit. Then the Dock is missing again. So the Dock obviously isn't launching upon startup or login.

I upgraded to Snow Leopard and now it keeps launching Mail. I am getting along fine with Entourage so I don't want to run Mail. How do I turn this off so Mail doesn't keep popping up and asking me to set up an account?

If any of you recall, in System 7, you could double-click a sound file and it would just play without launching an app. The OS itself was capable of playing sounds, like system sounds or even music files (you could also use QuickTime). This was pre-iTunes. I miss those days. The other day, I was trying out some sound effects, and double-clicking them launched the behemoth bloatware app, iTunes. Of course, I could pick another app, but I would prefer no app at all, i.e., system-level, ready-to-eat sounds; just click and it plays. Does anyone know of a system-level plug-in or background app that works in this way? An analogous system function would be clippings. Double-click one of those and it just pops up; no app launches. This is how System 7 worked, and I sorely miss it. I use sampled sounds a lot, and I just want to click on them to quickly hear what they sound like in that same simple way we once could.

I use quicktunes as a "remote" control for itunes, it's an awesome applications, but the problem is that it doesn't always launch when i startup, what i mean to say is that it's sporadic. I've added it to startup items, and removed it from startup items only to add it again, but still it doesn't work.

I am buying a new MBP as soon as I can make up my mind which one. I will be using Photoshop and Lightroom for my photo editing. I know a SSD is speedy for start up and launching apps. Does it also increase the speed at which the apps like Photoshop actually run once they are launched? I'm thinking about buying the base 2.4GHz and adding 4BGB and a 160GB SSD drive. I like the small 13" form factor. It will easily fit into my camera back pack. I'm thinking a SSD would be faster for quick field editing photo's helping to make up for the slower CPU. This would be for the field. I'm waiting for the new MP to come out. That machine would be for my "heavy lifting" work flow at home.

I don't know about you, but Snow Leopard's aurora is so much cooler. I used a program called "Desktop 2 Login" to change the default wallpaper for the login screen to a different wallpaper. Using this same program I changed it back to L's Aurora. (Still in 10.5). When I upgraded to snow leopard, the login wallpaper did not change. It is still stuck on L's aurora. I have used about every method besides Terminal, and it won't change.

After my install of SL on my MacBook, I'm getting a blank desktop screen when it starts up. Every once in a while I'll get the log on screen, but when I try to log on it gives me the spinning ball of death. I can boot my laptop with safe mode, but thats about it. I have restarted, reinstalled SL, Disk Utilities. I can get my MacBook to launch into safe mode fine.. but not any other way.

@ login the trackpad is disabled. Are there login keys to select the user? Or a quick key to re-enable the T-pad. I have a feeling it has something to do with Universal Access, as reinstall dies @ "loading additional speech voices".

Anybody want with the dev build want to see if the plist trick to get the 2D/transparent Dock on the bottom still works? I tried playing with my Dock tonight, and realized I can't stand it on the side or as the mirror/shelf version. If you have SL, please type the following into terminal, and see if it still works:
defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -bool 'TRUE'
killall Dock
You can undo it like so if you don't like it:
defaults delete com.apple.dock no-glass
killall Dock

I wanted to change my wallpaper for the login screen. I already changed the wallpaper in System/Library/CoreServices/DefaultDesktop.jpg. But when I check back at my login screen, it is still the purple aurora background.
I tried repairing it using onyx through file permissions and also snow leopard disk utility repair disk. But my wallpaper still doesn't change.
I tried using Loginox last time when I just got my snow leopard, when I tried changing the wallpaper, it crashed on me and this problem arised.

I accidentally used an old Leopard Dock application to attempt to change my Dock skin, and it screwed everything up. I borrowed another Mac and copied the Dock app from Core Services and replaced mine, but there's a white line across the bottom of the dock still. [URL]. I know I shouldn't have been messing with it in the first place, I knew things had changed between Leopard and Snow Leopard, but I did anyway, and now I don't know what to do.

On the dock, to the far right you can have applications, downloads, etc list of folder. What I would like to do is modify the default behavior for these icons only so that they open on hover rather than click. I want to do this because I have them setup as list style, and I can very quickly browse to whatever folder I need from there. If you open a folder in column view, you can hold down ALT and resize all the columns at the same time. This will also change column size for ALL folders in the system immedietly. Is there such a shortcut where I can also change the size of the finder window for ALL finder windows? Some finder windows open as tiny little thing, and I woudl prefer a nice large default window. I know you can do each one separately and close it but who wants to do that for every folder?

Anytime I do something on the dock that involves a noise happening (emptying trash, adium message, etc.) the noise isn't in sync with action. It is either way after or way before. This is only on my i7 iMac which I received yesterday. Again small issue but anyone have any ideas on this? Is this normal and I just haven't noticed it on any of my other (Leopard only, not SL) macs?

I've upgraded my MBP to Snow Leopard today from Leopard and I'm getting a Kernel Panic when I login as one user. Logging in as an Admin user or a new user account is fine, and I still get the Kernel Panic if I boot up in to Safe Mode. It's obviously a problem with the user account and looking at the dump log it seems to be caused trying to mount something, but I can't for the life of me track it down.

I've got this peculiar problem with my MacBook Pro Intel Core i5 running 10.6.8 with all the updates. Whenever I open the computer after logging out, the login window hangs. The insert bar in the username field doesn't blink and I get the spinning beach ball. Sometimes there's no cursor at all. If I close the lid without logging out there's never a problem. But of course that's not an aceptable solution.
I can not reproduce the problem with a fresh account, so I assume there's something wrong with my account. I've had this problem ever since I setup my original account. I've gone through the system.log and I do see some errors during the time the computer goes to sleep after I logout, but I don't know if they are serious or normal warnings.

Lately I've been noticing that when logging into our SnowLeopard miniserve after "fat-fingering" the password once, I am prompted to reset the Master Password. When doing this you are also informed that the keychain will be updated. Is there a system level setting that is causing this? It doesn't seem like you should have to reset the Master Password/keychain after one failed attempt to log into the system...?

I started having problems a couple of weeks ago with logging into my main account, I have 10.6.8, when I login to my main account it will either just be blue or maybe show the background image then will return to the login screen, I could access my guest account fine, so I created a new admin account and used console to grab the log when I tried to log into my original account.
