OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Are All Programs / Configuration Settings Restored From A Time Machine Backup

Apr 30, 2012

The hardrive in my late 2006 Macbook 2.0ghz laptop has finally kicked the bucket.  I confirmed this with an Apple Genius at my local Apple store after she plugged in an external drive and running disk utility to run a diagnostic. However, I forgot to ask her about some details concerning my time machine backup which resides on an external drive that connects via firewire.  I do know that my files and folders should be restored without issues.  Although, I'm not sure about the following:

1.  Will all my non-apple applications / programs be restored?

2.  Will my configuration settings for mail be restored?

3.  Will my itunes settings be restored (I have an iphone and ipad that connects to itunes)?

4.  Will my contacts in address book be restored?

I still have the original drive of this laptop which still works just fine and boots up okay (never erased the OS) where the upgraded drive that I installed a few years ago is the one that failed. Therefore, I will be reverting back to the original drive that is smaller and slower.

The Genius recommended to run disk utility from the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD (I originally had Leopard installed) to format the drive/install the OS and then do a full restore from my time machine backup.  Although, I'm not sure if all my programs and settings for certain apps will be restored.  I appreciate any help or other optioins I can possibly do to get back my saved files, programs, and settings.

OS X :: Leopard Install Disc In And Restored To Time Machine Volume?

Sep 2, 2009

I use a lot of plug ins for music production in Logic. Like an idiot, i upgraded to snow leopard, after having this problem with the upgrade to leopard from tiger. Of course half of my plug ins dont work.So i Time Machine backed up everything on my HD. I put my old leopard install disc in and restored to my Time Machine volume. It took about 2 and a half hours.

At the end of that, it asks you to restart, and i do and as soon as the apple pops up on the off-white screen, kernel panic and i have to restart. this is never ending
Ive tried repairing and verifying disk permissions from the leopard disc of my HD and still nothing. My final guess would be to just do a clean install of Leopard and then restore from time machine again. This seems SUPER risky to me as there are TONS of important project session files that i CANT afford to lose.Everything is backed up on my Time Machine drive, im still just a little nervous about doing this.Anyone have any other ideas and does this sound like a secure plan?

OS X :: Migration With Time Machine Only Restored System Apps?

Nov 25, 2009

I had some computer issues the other day that ended up requiring an erase/install of 10.5. So I reinstalled and when asked if I wanted to transfer data told it to use a Time Machine backup. I then ran Software Update to get all the updates. What I noticed was in my Applications folder only the standard set of Apple apps were there. No iLife apps, Adobe CS, etc were migrated over. I'm in the process of testing copying iPhoto from the backup. Is there a reason non-Apple apps are excluded from migration? I understand some installers, Adobe in particular, places files elsewhere in the system that might not be migrated properly. Also my Downloads folder is non-existent too and will need use TM again on it.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Restored Wrong Data

Mar 25, 2012

OK - the history here is the previous Macbook was replaced because of system problems, including many files with FUTURE dates (eg. 2037). Apple store agreed after repeated issues, they would replace the machine. We did a final time machine/capsule backup before taking it in.

Got the new Macbook and ran the Migration assistant to restore all data from the time capsule. The data was not correct, and I suspect it was something to do with the future dates.

I can open the sparse bundle backup file and see the correct backup information, but I have no option when I open Time Machine to pick ANY previous backups. This all started with Macbook problem, and I'm really thinking they should figure this out - but assuming they wont, how to safely get the 'real' information recovered from Time Capsule.

PS - OS X Lion on both systems - Macbook Pro 15" i7, 750GB

I upgraded my iMac to the new i5 and sold my 24" iMac. Before selling it, I backed everything up with Time Machine. I transferred everything to the i5 and I thought everything was working fine until I tried to open iWeb and it didn't work. If I move my domain file from the iWeb folder, iWeb opens fine and starts from scratch. When I check my website online it is still active as well. How can I get my original domain file to open within iWeb so all is not lost?

OS X :: Restored To Blank Drive From Time Machine - Couple Odd Things?

Aug 14, 2010

So I replaced my hard drive with a brand new bigger one, booted to the DVD of Snow Leopard with my Time Machine disk plugged in as well, and did the partition and then restore steps. No, I didn't have to install MacOS X first and then migrate. I restored right from backup. Mostly worked awesomely.

Couple oddities that maybe folks here have answers for:That first step (setting that 1 partition), which I think handled the formatting as well was SUPER fast. I expected it would have to take hours for a 320gig drive. Took minutes. Do drives no longer require low-level surface formatting? My desktop background was lost. No biggie - I re-found the picture and set it.I now have a "Private" folder visible in finder that didn't used to be there. It has underneath it the following folders: etc, tftpboot, tmp, var. What's this?

OS X :: Time Machine And Snow Leopard Restore?

Jun 14, 2009

I am a little new to Time Machine, so I was wondering if anyone could answer this? I am currently using Time Machine to backup my Mac. I am running Leopard and I want to move to Snow Leopard when it comes out. When i get Snow Leopard, I will perform a reformat on my hard drive so its a nice fresh install. My question is what options will I get when I get when I go to install it as I have Time Machine? I'll be honest and say I'll be happy to just copy across my iTunes, iPhoto, contacts and calender over to Snow Leopard and not worry about anything else (stuff like downloading Firefox takes seconds and isn't a problem). Is this an option? Can i just install Snow Leopard totally fresh, then connect the Time Machine drive and copy the iTunes (etc etc) folders/files/docments over to my fresh install?

OS X :: Time Machine In Snow Leopard Slow

Sep 8, 2009

I just tried and everything seems non-responsive or on a 2 minute delay. I use Time Capsule and Time Machine and things are just not acceptable at this speed.

Also, I don't think the archives are right. I used to have a ton of things on my desktop - most of which I cleaned recently by moving or deleting the files.

However, going back a few months in Time Machine, the only files that show up in my desktop folder/view are the ones that are on my desktop today. All the older, moved or deleted files no longer show up in Time Machine.

OS X :: Cannot Backup To Time Machine With Snow Leopard

Feb 18, 2010

I have a Apple Time Capsule which is used as a Time Machine Backup Facility and also a Wireless Hub for File Sharing and Internet Connection. I've been using Leopard for a couple of years without any significant problems. The other day, I installed Snow Leopard and suddenly, I'm facing a number of different problems and errors regarding backups to the Time Machine with the Time Capsule.

First, I was facing problems with a Case Sensitive error and now that I have ejected the Time Capsule, the Disk Utility has come up with a different name altogether and now I have the added problem of disk space on the time capsule. I know I could re-format and start over but that would defeat the whole point of my backups. The Time Machine/Capsule should re-write over the old backups when making space for new ones but its just giving me an error about not enough disk space.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Time Machine Error 11 With 10.6.8?

I finally upgraded to Snow Leopard. I have some older software and everything was working fine, so I delayed. I have an Intel 2 x 2.66 Dual Core. Now, I keep getting an error whenever I try to run Time Machine. So far, this is what I have done: Used disk Utility, Disk Warrior, then disk utility again (erased back up drive), then downloaded and reinstalled using the 10.6.8 combo update. Disk Utility again. Tried to backup and got the same error: The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk.

After reading online I downloaded and installed backup buddy (I think) Anyway, this is the error that it gives: Starting standard backup?Backing up to: /Volumes/Backup/Backups.backupdb?Backup content size: 91.4 GB excluded items size: 65.6 MB for volume Knight/Freelance?No pre-backup thinning needed: 109.60 GB requested (including padding), 364.91 GB available

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Cannot Backup To Time Machine

Jun 4, 2012

I had to have the old hard drive replaced on my macbook pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 operating system. It was replaced at the apple store. I brought it home and yesterday restored it from the last time machine backup of my old hard drive which was Friday. That appears to be the only backup on the external hard drive I've been using with Time machine.

Today, it gets an error message. "Time Machine could not complete the backup. This backup is too large for the backup disk"...etc.

It is almost like it is trying to completely back up the new hard drive even though it was just restored from it. Is it because it thinks it is a different drive or something because it is a new hard drive? I don't want to delete the one good backup that I have but, I want to be able to use time machine to back anything up.
