OS X :: Showing Folder Contents In List View Automatically?
May 20, 2010
How do I set my folders to display in list view instead of icon view consistently? I've tried the "open new windows in column view" option, but it still opens as icons.
I'm running Lion on an 27" iMac (first i7 iteration), and have a folder on an external HDD that contains a couple of hundred subfolders.Â
However - when viewing them in Finder, only the first hundred or so display.Â
The others are there - searching the disc finds the folders and their contents and, once, the contents are located, they'll display in the expanded view.Â
I copied the offending folder across to the Mac's main HD, but this behaviour came across with it. This, by the way, was happening on Snow Leopard too before I upgraded to Lion.Â
I spent a lot of time selecting cuts to put in my iTunes Store Wish List (had to listen to the auditions to find the right versions, etc.). Now when I go to my wish list, it says it's empty. Is there a time limit or something? I filled out the Wish List a few weeks ago.
I've come to my wit's end now - I've got about 10K plus of photos in my folder which I have nicely organized and grouped with different labels and comments. I would like to now convert the list of files with all attributes into a document. I've tried the copy and paste tricks with Textedit as well as several folder actions offered in Automator -to no avail as all I've got is just a list with file names which is more or less useless to me. It seems that during the process only the files names are copied but not other infos like label, size etc. Is there something I have missed here? I would be extremely grateful if someone could throw some light here.
I have some files on my desktop right now that I would like to secure from wondering eyes. Other people use my Macbook Pro from time to time and I don't want anyone to read these documents. Is there a way to create a folder/file that requires a password to gain entry to view the contents of this folder/file?
A friend recently downloaded 500 messages from her ISP to Mac Mail (4.4) The inbox says she has 500 messages but she can only see around 150 / 200. How can she see that complete list ? I'm trying to convince her to remove those messages off her ISP's server.
I've come across a strange behaviour of Finder when copying a folder over another with the same name. I'm using 10.4.11.
Say I have a folder named "Test" and it contains "File1" and "File2" and I copy it over another folder named "Test", which contains "File3" and "File4". After copying I would expect folder "Test" to contain all four files, but it doesn't! It will only contain the two that I copied over, the original two will be deleted.
Is there any way to have finder replace files of the same name when copying and retain all other files in the destination folder?
I would like to create an archive of important application installers and I will sync the contents between two systems MacPro and Macbook Pro.Â
I need to pull the names of the application/developers from somewhere so I figured I would use the Application Support directory.Â
So I need a way to copy this directories folder structure without any of the file contents. Is there an easy way to do this. I found a post with an Automator script but the link is dead [URL]
I also found this post that refers to doing it in terminal but since it is the app support directory I am wary to do this as I am not familiar with terminal at all and I am not clear on what exactly to write in the old_dir / new_dir section. I figure it would be something like this /Library/Application Support but I dont want to make a mistake.Â
Here is the Terminal command:
cd old_dir find . -type d -depth -print | cpio -pd new_dir Â
I noticed that finder is not displaying all files when I look at folders with lots of files in "icon view" mode but they do show up in "list view" Same thing happened with the computer at work. I'm using OS X Leopard on both.
My idea is this; buy the nvidia 3D vision, install windows 7 (since the nvidia 3D vision is windows only) and buy a 3D capable monitor, and I should be able to play games, view content in 3D. After doing research, I found that the nvidia Geforce 9600 GT is supported, however I found no indication that the nvidia Geforce 9600M GT is supported. My question is this, technically speaking should my plan work, or is the difference between the Geforce 9600 GT and 9600M GT significant enough to alter my idea.
My macbook pro is running the following: Snow leopard 2.66GHz Intel core 2 duo processor 4gb memory nvidia Geforce 9600M GT
On the snow leopard is there any way to set a password on a specific folder and all the contents in the folder so when others click it the password is asked?
Why not have Apple move all iDisk contents automatically or by request to iCloud? Why do I need to copy and paste my saved iDisk items back to my MAC or storage device? The iDisk items are already located in an Apple server, so transfer them to iCloud.

I've read many times people want to make folders appear at the top of a list in Finder like they are represented in Windows explorer. I found an article on Macworld that tells you how to do this.
I remember doing this over a year ago on my G4 Powerbook and it working. But on my Intel MacBook Pro, I can't locate the file they are referring to in the article. where this file was moved to or how to access this thing on the Intel machines?
My problem is with Finder view/sort by: I understand how to view and sort by the "Icon, List, Columns and Cover" and then by Name, Size etc. By my problem is when I am in say, "View by List" and sorting by Name. I get some files above and below folders, depending on the names. But is there any way to make this work like MS Windows "yes I know I said it", where sorting by name will list ALL folders first in alphabetical order and then the files below them in alphabetical order?
Under Leopard and prior, in List view you can highlight a line by selecting anywhere on the line. However, to actually select the file to drag it, etc, you had to select the file name itself, clicking the date etc wouldn't allow you to drag the file.
Well, in Snow Leopard, you can now select anywhere on the line and it will allow you to drag the file(s). Pretty nice.
However.....this causes a weird UI issue. If the window you are working in is small enough so that the items in list view fill it up completely (so there is a scroll bar), you can no longer right click on any empty space or the date/filesize etc to pull up the contextual menu for example to create a New Folder.
If there is empty space below the file list, then it still allows you to right click to get the menu.
Opening HD. always comes up in Icon View. Have gone into menu and unchecked "Icon view" and ckd. " list View" but quite often it goes back to icon view. Irritating that it won't stay as list view.

Maybe I am missing a setting somewhere but the wee triangles alongside folders in list view randomly disappear. To see what is inside a folder, therefore I have to double-click (which kind of defeats the idea of list view methinks!)
Here's what I need and I'm not sure how I'd do it so I thought I'd ask, since I'm new to macs. I have a hard drive with mp3's on it. Each artist has it's own folder with their albums located inside. What I want to do is print or compile a text file [or whatever you recommend] just the Artist folder with another folder to determine what Artist's I'm missing on the one hard drive.
Is there a way to add a column in the list view that shows what folder a file is in? I know it shows it at the bottom of the window, but that doesn't help me.
After doing an erase and clean install to 10.6.6 for some reason my Search window continues to open in Icon view rather than List view as it did before. Hard to believe I can't resolve this. And there's probably a very simple solution, but even after doing an extensive search on the web I can't seem to find it.
I have to clean up my calendars in ical.app. At the moment, there are around 10 different calendars mixed from fragments of an Outlook import, mobile phone import, Entourage fragments, new ICal calendars. Can I display all events of a calendar at once in a list, to mark and delete unimportant or double events? Is there a easier way, to edit multiple events from one calendar to another (I have to export a calendar, delete it after export in ical and import it in the calendar, I want it to live in)?
I want to select several files in icon view, and I want to click the first icon, hold down a key combination, and then select the "final" file to select all the files inclusive in that set. I thought that "Shift" would do it, but it doesn't.
